Diabolique Reviews

Great movie, with a great director. Plot is amazing. I cannot go further than that.

Apparently a big influence on Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho just a few years later, Diabolique seems like exactly the kind of film he’d make, and in fact it seems like that was his plan, until someone else beat him to the rights. It’s a mystery, it’s a crime story, its full of suspicious characters you’re not sure if you can trust, its got a lead who falls further and further down a rabbit hole as the story progresses. Despite being billed as a horror film it doesn’t really become one until around the final 10 minutes, but it does it really well, with little music, slow shots, dark and creepy corridors and an escalating sense of dread and paranoia. It’s based around the kind of plan where a million things could easily go wrong, and any one of them could derail it completely, but the motivations certainly make sense, and the actors play their parts so well that you never fell like any of them are giving the game away. I also love how it ends with a request not to spoil the film, an unspoken cinematic rule that I wished more people would follow. I’m not sure how much different it would have been if Hitch had been the man to helm it, but as it is, it really demonstrates just how good European cinema was in the mid 20th century, a time when American cinema was still strangled by the Hayes Code. If you love a good crime thriller, be sure to give it a watch.

Definitivamente um clássico do terror pscológico, uma obra prima conceitual. Adoro a estética desse filme, ele guarda um dos finais mais impressionantes que já vi em algumas obras.

This is a top notch thriller, executed perfectly. Loved this vignette, the mystery had me racking my brain, and the cast was great.

As good as they come, one of the best thrillers ever made. Incredible build up and payoff, with excellence in every scene. Clouzot was a master.

B+ a charismatic and entertaining mystery. worth a watch and maybe two on a Friday night with a large glass of red wine.

A fantastic and simple storyline with unexpected twists which keeps you guessing throughout. I have genuinley not felt so tense when watching a film from this period. Many older films with horror elements can feel silly, but this one feels like it hasn't aged at all and could easily have be released today.

Often labeled as a psychological horror film, Henri-Georges Clouzot's Diabolique could more accurately be described as a mystery thriller. The film, involving the murder of a brutal and abusive principal of a boys' school by his wife and mistress, puts an interesting spin on the genre – we know who committed the crime and understand the motive, but are left puzzled by the disappearance of the corpse, setting off a strange chain of events. While the story is clever (you've got to love the ending) and the production is well-executed (with the exception of the lighting – what's with all of the shadows?), it is nowhere near the shocking and gruesome affair that many have claimed and will leave anyone who is expecting anything resembling horror terribly disappointed.

Classic films like Diabolique are like black coffee - dark, intense, and likely to make you smarter.

While having a predictable twist ending for this experienced film-lover, it was nonetheless an exciting story.

This film seemed like nothing special to me. It had a lot of the main tropes that are often seen in a variety of different "basic stories". That being said this film was not poorly acted or created. The main weakness is just lack of originality in plot. I guess if your a fan of classic movies you should watch this otherwise I do not think it really has any redeeming qualities.

Very stylish. Well acted. But sadly, when you come to the table *decades* after release - after hearing about, 'the suspense!', 'unique plot!', etc - after decades of watching other lesser and *clearly derivative* films that rip-off/recycle this films core plot, the reveal not surprisingly turns out pretty much as you guessed it 10mins prior. Heh, like the murder-of-the-week show with the well-known actor in a small inconsequential role; process of elimination makes it *clear* who the perp will actually be at the wind up. That's pretty much how viewing this works out as well. It's just impossible to come to it with fresh, unjaded eyes, that haven't already seen it done a dozen times since, in the schlockiest slasher films... Excellent, and original film. Just seeing it too late to get the intended full effect. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

A French Hitchcock/Agatha Christie suspense drama of the highest order. Simple, tense, dark but brilliant plot that plays out at the perfect pace. Excellent ending. Has no problem in standing the rest of time. Works as effectively now as ever. Just great entertainment and deserving of classic status.

Good shot selection and editing. Solid picture and sound quality for the age. I can't fairly rate this movie as it is subtitled and I wasn't really paying attention. Seemed like a very good idea and the ending is excellent. Slow-building psychological suspense well executed and somewhat timeless.

Clouzot's heart-pounding horror film provides great material for fans of Hitchcock -- and the horror genre in general.

this was very good for being 66 years old. in fact, that last part where she's walking down that hallway from her room to the bathroom was excruciating - because there was NO music. just the sound of her breathing/whimpering. it was extremely effective; i was anxious/scared along with her. i would suspect that wasn't done on purpose, but today's films hardly have scenes without suspenseful music with a nice jump scare at the end. it's become a trope so this movie was very refreshing.
