Cliffhanger Reviews

Apr 4, 2025

Enormously silly but very entertaining. We forget that there was a time when Renny Harlin's maximalist approach to action movies yielded good results.

One of the best action movies of all time. Lithgow plays a classic villain.

Decent idea, but corny lines and Lithgow as the bad guy can't surmount Stalone hanging on the cliffside.

The first 10 to 15 minutes were good then the movie went somewhere I didn't expect it to go. Then it got better again but then got dull. It passed the time but not a great movie. It's not good, it's not bad, it's just Meh.

Man after the opening 10 minutes which is really good it slowly just falls off. The pacing & editing is just ok and really is the main culprit of the problems here. The first half is significantly better than the second which just devolves into over the top action and it can feel like over the top action just happens. The first half the cracks show with the jumping between Stallone's character and the heist plot which feels like two completely different films. But once it comes together and they become divided up going after Stallone it just doesn't really recover. Renny Hamlin does a decent job with everything else though and keeps it going just enough to where it's passable. There are some amazing shots and special effects in this. However there is so many over the top action scenes in this that really weighs things down and gets rid of any suspense for dumb action. Same thing with the acting also which is better in the first half which has more character development. The bad guys are forgettable and become less smart and sinister and more and more like cartoonish bad guys with over the top acting and actions at times.Everyone does these weird random screaming freakouts out of nowhere at times which is laughable. The music also is stronger in the first half and just becomes forgettable eventually which is odd. It limps to the finish line eventually. This needed to find a better way to setup the heist plot and Stallone's character despite the awesome opening. Unless your a die hard Stallone or Hiking/Climbing fan skip this. It's a shame because it starts out soooo promising.

Slightly underrated film. This film was well rounded so to speak. Suspenseful. The scenery was fantastic. The storyline and characters were all very good, albeit the very first scene which was over the top Suspenseful, no pun intended. Their are certain scenes in movies that are so well done, you wonder if it'd be best to leave them out. Very good movie however, a rare staple for Stallone.

Watched it for the first time tonight. I remember when it was first released in the theaters. I imagine at the time of its release it was very exciting to watch. This is the type of film I could totally see being remade. John Lithgow as a villain… 👍

Decent fun overall a movie

Cliffhanger has an immense sense of scale and adventure through its treacherous setting in the snowed-out Rockies while constantly throwing rock-climber-rescue-rangers Gabe Walker and Hal Tucker (Sylvester Stallone and Michael Rooker) in one spectacular stunt after the next. Between our lead protagonists altruism and determination to outwit our unraveling team of antagonists lead by Eric Qualen and Richard Travers (two standout performances from one John Lithgow and a rabid Rex Linn), the elements are against both to allow a consistently adventurous experience. Director Renny Harlin is clearly more confident in his directoral capabilities here than in his days of directing Die Hard 2, as he digs out a plethora of scenic sequences rife with inventive and nail biting action. Yes, the film is admittedly in the framework of the many many Die Hard knock offs to follow the successful formula during the 1990's. However Cliffhanger stands out through its sheer insistent to be as entertaining as possible. Whether through a spectacular areal heist or Stallone narrowly clinging to cliff face as he's shot at from below, the single more appropriate adjective ascribed to Cliffhanger is that it's thoroughly gripping!

Co-written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, Cliffhanger is an action blockbuster from 1993 about a group of criminals whose plane, containing briefcases filled with stolen money, crash lands in the mountains. They attempt to recover the dough but a group of resilient mountain climbers stand in their way. The film opens with a dramatic incident in which climbers Gabe (Stallone) and Hal (Michael Rooker) fail to save Hal's girlfriend who, following a harness malfunction, falls to her death. Cut to some time later and Hal still blames Gabe for what happened, as does he, so their friendship is in tatters, to say the least. When a U.S. Treasury plane, which was the subject of a heist by unhinged criminal Eric Qualen (John Lithgow) and his team, including a U.S. Treasury agent-turned-thief, crash-lands in the Rocky Mountains it becomes up to Gabe and his girlfriend Jessie (Janine Turner) to stop them from escaping with the money and killing their friends. Cliffhanger was a significant hit at the box-office and it even earned itself a few Academy Award nominations, though beating Jurassic Park at anything that year was always going to be a challenge. Between Cliffhanger and Demolition Man, 1993 was a career-refreshing year for Sylvester Stallone. There's a lot about Cliffhanger that works brilliantly, for a mindless action movie that is. One thing is the mountain setting which provides countless options for dangers the characters could face from avalanches to falls, wild animals, icy lakes, the cold, the list goes on. The film's core concept is a clever one in that it puts protagonists with no experience when it comes to dealing with dangerous, armed criminals and shows that, in fact, what they deal with from day to day has prepared them quite well for the events depicted in the film and so they aren't to be underestimated. The action itself is ludicrous throughout, especially the zip-lining between planes sequence, but it is well done and the stunts, as well as the effects, are impressive. The villains are also pretty out there between John Lithgow who inexplicably attempts some kind of English accent as Qualen and his less clever, but equally cruel minions. They're cartoonish bad guys, the kind you'd see in a Die Hard movie, but they are an enjoyable bunch to see get taken out by the heroes. The heroes in question are likable enough despite their minimal personality, especially Michael Rooker's character who has to deal with the villains directly the entire time and goes through the more noticeable arc. Even though you do root for them, Sylvester Stallone and Janine Turner are pretty bland in this movie so it's a blessing that the villains are as ridiculously mean as they are. While it's great that the film's plot is easy to follow, it does feel a little underwritten in places, specifically when it comes to the characters. John Lithgow's villain is fun but he could have been iconic with a few more snappy one-liners and more scenes of him doing something psychotic, like killing someone in a sadistic way. We also spend a long time showing what the mountain climbers go through emotionally after the death of Hal's girlfriend but the film doesn't seem to resolve this much by the end. Some of the supporting characters (the young snowboarders and Ralph Waite's pilot) also feel somewhat short-changed. With a film like Cliffhanger, you're really just looking for it to be entertaining and deliver the good guys vs bad guys schtick with gusto and Cliffhanger does just that. This is a fun popcorn movie and it's still perfect for a Friday night with friends, even if it sometimes does fall a little short of the action movie it could have been. Solid blockbuster.

This action movie was great. Sylvester Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker, Janine Turner, Rex Linn, Caroline Goodall, Leon, and the rest of the cast did a great job in this movie. The plot of the movie was thrilling, intense, and dramatic. It's about fighting to survive in the mountains and protecting your friends from thieves. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a must see. Don't listen to the bad reviews this movie has gotten, those people have terrible tastes in movies.

A interesting concept set in a isolated location, with Stallone yes please. It has a lot of good elements the action is well performed and tense at moments. It feels like it could have been better, maybe more of villain scenes I like that guy. I don't know the film is missing something, I can't put my finger on.

One of Stallone's dumbest.

Jan 21, 2023

One of the best movies in 93 , amazing, Stallone and MR great and JL the best villain

Jan 16, 2023

This is possibly the most 90s film ever made, every single person that pops up on screen is a 'that guy'. Lithgow is giving such a wild in and out accent performance I was floored by the it.

Vale apena assistir? Com certeza. Nota: 9
