The Firm Reviews
The plot goes rather weak at the end, but the real star of the film is its Casting Director. I mean, how cool is to have Jigsaw, and Special Agent Hank Schrader team up against Tom Cruise?
A well crafted and intelligent thriller with some interesting ideas. It's a John Grisham tale, so of course it's about lawyers and it's set in the Deep South; nothing wrong with that. There is one howler though; it's simply impossible to believe that Cruise's decent and devoted husband could go off with a random woman he meets on a beach (this is a set up, of course - most things are in this story). He just wouldn't. Anyway, that aside, Cruise does what Cruise does, Gene Hackman is terrific, as is Jeanne Tripplehorn, but Holly Hunter steals the show as the secretary of a private investigator who meets a sticky end, after which she becomes the resourceful confidante of Cruise's lawyer.
One of the best movies i have ever seen. I’m 64. Great story. Great acting. Great directing.
The Firm remains one of Sydney Pollack's best films and an immensely entertaining thriller years later. Tom Cruise gives a stimulating performance in this well-crafted adaptation that draws you in and keeps you glued to your seat from start to finish.
My favorite Sidney Pollack film, and one of my favorites from Tom Cruise. The Firm is a smart, suspenseful ride, with no lulls, and is filled with on point performances from several of Hollywood's best, including Holly Hunter and Gene Hackman. Also of note is its musical score.
A worthy adaptation of its source material, The Firm just might be the best John Grisham film I've seen. It's certainly a helluva lot better than The Pelican Brief, which came out the same year. The acting is great, it's suspenseful, it's paced so well that the 2.5-hour-long runtime will just fly by, the score does a good job of setting the mood in each scene without being melodramatic and it remains faithful to the spirit of the book whilst making changes that are for the better, such as our hero being much more sympathetic rather than just being the guy we root for simply because the antagonists are worse than his corrupt ass. A compelling legal thriller that's sure to be a treat for Grisham fans and non-fans alike.
This is a very entertaining thriller movie with some great writing and excellent performances from Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman and Jeanne Tripplehorn. This movie has a solid premise with some really good execution. It's smart, sleek, mysterious and provides the audience with some fantastic edge-of-your-seat thrills. The first half is very entertaining. It's a drama that's filled with intrigue and sets up a solid mystery. The second half sort of shifts genre by becoming a suspenseful crime thriller. It's a very entertaining movie. The acting is really good and one of the movie's strong points. Tom Cruise was still making dramas at this point in time and delivers an incredible performance. Gene Hackman is a veteran actor who delivers a fantastic performance as is expected from him. Jeanne Tripplehorn is good. Holly Hunter is only on screen for a couple of minutes but was nominated for an Oscar and gives a very good performance. Ed Harris plays his role with an urgency that's really good. David Strathairn is really good in his minor role. And there's a really good surprise performance from Gary Busey. Overall, this is a really suspenseful mystery thriller with some excellent performances that I'd recommend to anyone.
God i wish they'd still make movies like this. Great story (based on a John Grisham novel). Great acting. Great noir esque score. A tense, suspenseful law/lawyer type thriller.
My favorite of the legal dramas. Superb cast. Tom Cruise is serviceable as always, but elevated by the likes of Gene Hackman (who, as usual almost steals the show with his performance,) Jeanne Triplehorn, Holly Hunter, Hal Holbrook just to name a few.. Wilford Brimley plays a great "bad guy." Some might try to see the movie as a social commentary on 90s era "yuppie-dum". I just think it's darn good entertainment. And the city of Memphis never looked so good.
I enjoyed this story line and was engaged for the whole movie, such a shame Tom Cruise is such an egomaniac !
Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of all time. This was a great mystery movie
I liked this film, but it is not the most memorable. Tom Cruise is great, as always. I feel like this film just needed a little more action.
This crime drama was really good. Tom Cruise, Gene Hackman, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Holly Hunter, Ed Harris, David Strathairn, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. The plot of the movie was dramatic, thrilling, and suspenseful. It's about taking down the people you work for and protecting your family at all costs. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's a definite must see.
I've always been perplexed by the legal thriller craze of the 90s. What about the genre was so appealing to appealing to mass audiences? The endless law jargon? The predictable twists and turns? Regardless, this movie is a prime example of everything that made so many of these films forgettable.
Tom Cruise rarely misses and he didn't miss here. What a great movie and I loved the actress who is his wife, she was great! Very interesting movie.
Firm on my mediocre rating, as Tom and Gene carry this above water.
Entertaining and suspenseful, but, the music is god awful the entire movie. And, even though it's mid-90s made, it feels looks and feels completely mid-80s, kinda ghetto. Overal good though.
Writing this as the credits roll. We all have come along way since the 90s earth got warmer and people went colder. Whenever a movie of a time that passed come up I assume most of us can't help but wonder how much we have compensated to get so little bit 2020s. Major differences between The Firm and what we come across now are the scenery and sentimentality of the story. We accepted the gentleness but in movies it's not what can be sold anymore and that's tragic, what's equally special about this is the story with still advancing technology the characters are designed to counter each obstacle with intuition and collectively that's just a decorative quality in modern stories. Acting was sharp, story was interesting and dialogues were witty. Excellent visuals and audio too. A smart creative writing.
Big budget thriller that falls flat for so many reasons with main being is muddling, middle of the road story.
We know it's manipulative. We know it's predicable. It's a little too smart and contrived in some areas. We know that Hal Holbrook is up to no good. But it's a great journey despite all this.
