The Secret Garden Reviews

Feb 22, 2025

The Secret Garden deftly tells a children's classic without subverting its mature themes.

The Secret Garden has always held a special place in my heart, but rewatching it as an adult brought layers of meaning I couldn’t fully grasp as a child. Growing up neglected and emotionally abused, I used this movie as a source of comfort, a way to cope with feeling unseen and unsupported. The story of Mary Lennox—a “spoiled” child not because she was indulged, but because her parents were never there to guide her resonated deeply with my own experiences. It’s not about being spoiled; it’s about a child desperately needing reassurance and care that was never offered. The contrast between the empathy of the children and the cold indifference of the adults in the film hit me hard. It mirrored my own life, where other kids might understand your pain, while the adults around you fail to provide that much-needed connection. Watching this as an adult was deeply moving. It was like revisiting a piece of my past that still holds so much truth for me. This film is more than a story.. it’s a reflection of the inner world of children who grow up unseen, yet find their own way to bloom. The Secret Garden remains a profound and healing experience, no matter how many years go by.

A pureza da infância e o valor da verdadeira amizade retratada de forma inocente e leal neste clássico gentil que celebra a esperança.

I know this speaks to lots of people, but to me in 2024 it’s just unpleasant.

This movie came out when I was a little girl and I've loved it ever since. I think that Kate Maberly's role as Mary is one of the best and even though the book is a great source for the tale - the remakes of the movie haven't come close to the greatness that this movie did. I think the cast probably helped facilitate that with legends such as Maggie Smith to lend their talents and bring characters like Mrs. Matlock to life. The lush scenery of the garden and when spring hits in particular are refreshingly beautiful scenes and it makes the entire movie a heartwarming and beautiful experience that I feel is a sort of sunshine effect and I love to revisit it often, but particularly when Spring descends or Easter is near. A lovely family film that has been a favorite for over 25 years now, I feel the story, the scenes and the acting are superb and it's a cult classic now for that reason.

Based on the book by Francis Hogdson Burnett being the third adaptation directed by Agnieszka Holland A small girl Mary grows up in India in the early 1900s with her parents not wanting her in the slightest She was always alone and after both of them die she's sent to live with her uncle in England But he neglects her as well so Mary explores the whole mansion stumbling into a small boy Colin closed off from the outside He can barely walk but they both discover an enchanted garden filled with lush flowers and wildlife I didn't find this interesting or as magical as I wanted it to be I felt the same thing about 'Fairy Tale: A True Story'

"The Secret Garden" is a timeless and enchanting cinematic gem that captures the essence of Frances Hodgson Burnett's beloved novel. Director Agnieszka Holland's meticulous attention to detail brings the Yorkshire moors to life, creating a visually stunning backdrop for this tale of discovery and transformation. The young cast delivers remarkable performances, with Kate Maberly shining as the spirited Mary Lennox and Heydon Prowse capturing the essence of Colin Craven's vulnerability. The film beautifully explores themes of healing, friendship, and the power of nature, instilling a sense of wonder and magic in every scene. With its lush cinematography, evocative score, and a touch of whimsy, "The Secret Garden" is a captivating and heartfelt journey that will transport audiences of all ages to a world of imagination and hope.

Some people complained the makers changed the message of the book. They didn't, or I don't think so anyway. If that was the case, that was the only thing they changed. The script is focused and the direction masterful. The book in my opinion is one of the most enchanting children's books ever written. The film is equally enchanting, and the director manages to spoof a spirited performance from the lovely Kate Maberly. Haydn Prowse was great as Colin, and John Lynch is suitably melancholy as the uncle. Stealing the show, however, was Maggie Smith as Mrs Medlock, the truly beastly housekeeper. The film itself looks beautiful thanks to the stunning cinematography, and I loved the Gothic darkness tone retained from the book. Another mention is the haunting and poignant music score, that makes me cry. What does work best of all is its simplicity though. I thoroughly recommend this and Little Princess, 10/10 Bethany Cox

Worth watching more than once. Few films have so many child actors as the lead. An astonishing tale of children wresting control from adults with a sensitive and compelling exploration of inter-class relationships in Victorian England.

This is a really handsome production. The trouble is the scriptwriter (s) have removed every scrap of charm and dramatic tension from the story. How could they think they knew better than Hodgson-Burnett???

This adaption of the classic novel is probably the best one up-to-date as it is filled to the brim with luscious scenery, excellent acting, and plenty of visceral drama.

When I was a child, I saw this movie as a series on 온라인카지노추천. I thought about it for years, and never knew what it was called, I just remembered that sick kid in the dark room, and the two kids who brought him into the garden. I realized later that it was a book, and couldn't understand why no one had talked about it in school (I live in Europe). I've watched it several times as an adult and I still love it. It's a classic for me.

A young Kate Maberly turns in a surprisingly effective performance that helps further carry this mature children's tale.

Never will another version of this film beat the 1993 Secret Garden. It is spectacular and the costumes, hair and makeup, and set design are bar none. This is a children's classic and enjoyable for adults too. A protagonist you can root for.
