Wyatt Earp Reviews
There are a few versions of Wyatt Earps life due to sensationalist accounts in territorial tabloids of the late 19th century to promote circulation. He, and especially his wife Josephine, strongly sanitised his biography, omitting his own infamous past following his first wife’s death. It is a shame that the script writers didn’t make a reasonable effort to tell a true story rather than this garbage. It is unlikely that Virgil brought his injured brother, James, home from the war, but returned later. Wyatt didn’t burn his matrimonial home after the death of his first wife. He sold it for $75. There is no evidence Wyatt Earp hunted Buffalo for a living and he didn’t make the acquaintance of the Masterson brothers until 2 years later in Dodge City. Virgil was maimed in his left arm, not right. Morgan was “assassinated” 2½ months after his older brother, Virgil, was ambushed in the street and maimed with a shotgun, not the same day. He didn’t die on a billiard table nor was his wife present, having left for Colton, the previous month, after the Ok Corral gunfight. During the “Vendetta Ride”, all the known accounts of the gunfight where Curly Bill Brocius was killed differ significantly from the screenplay in the movie, including the scenery. Nor was Johny Ringo killed in this gunfight, as implied in the dialogue. This movie contains lots of fiction, using an historical character's name as the movie title to draw in viewers.
Old school but good fun. Worth a watch if you like westerns and Wyatt Earp. Dennis Quaid is annoying as Doc Holiday but besides that it's a good movie.
I think this movie is an absolute classic, it captures the feel of the desert, west, cowboys etc. Not sure what everyone is complaining about. The score is amazing as well.
Slow paced buy when started there was no paise till it ended. What an epitome for excellent movie making ? Hope no one will give a close up for negative reviews.
Awesome movie, what a cast. One of the things I love about movies, you get to see different angles on how life may have been in that era. This movie is different from other Wyatt versions. Excellent, the tomatometer must be operated by idiots. Wyatt wasn't just competing against tombstone, it was competing against Wolf. Sorry, I really enjoy Jack Nicholson, I saw Wolf. NRJ.
One can almost see what Kasdan was going for here, a Western Epic that both deconstructs and reinforces the myth of Wyatt Earp. What he got was a turgid, overlong mess. Costner is at his very worst here, boring and one dimensional.
I personally feel this film is great, what doesn't make sense to me is why most people prefer Tombstone which is cheesy and only one small segment of the Earp brothers lives. I don't see the Wyatt Earp film as boring at all. Both films had very good actors though. The character development was definitely more thought out and better in Wyatt Earp. One film has everything and the other not enough.
Long for sure, but never felt over-indulgent or unnecessary. An entertaining look at a legend, with solid performances all around. The score and cinematography are incredible
if i watched this back when, i sure don't remember? made the most of the scenery, as a good western must. heck of a cast, too! watched half way, then finished next day. liked it better than the supposed "train wreck" it was rated to be. what it didn't do was choke me up, even momentarily. most all good flicks do that to me. still, very watchable.
I wanted to like this more than Tombstone. it would have been easier to do if it had been released before, rather than after. All of the portrayals are a little bland in comparison to Tombstone. Josie's character was the only one that's unforgettable for me.
This is the story of Wyatt Earp entire life and for the most part its entertaining, but I was genuinely disappointed that other characters didn't get a chance to shine throughout this films run time.
I'm sorry, Kevin Costner just can't act. Same monotone drone regardless of the role. I don't understand his success.
This is a very underrated movie it's a very historical accurate movie on the life of Wyatt Earp and Kevin Costner gives one of his bests performances
The better Earp film. Some great performances and a much closer tie to the truth than its competition.
Story/Screenplay: (3.5/5) A somewhat interesting story about the life of Wyatt Earp, his family, loves, friends, and enemies. Duration/Tempo: (2/5) At 3 hours and 11 minutes, this is a very long movie that feels long. Completely unnecessary. Cast & Crew: (4.5/5) Great selection of actors for a western. Kevin Costner, Dennis Quaid, Michael Madsen, and Tom Sizemore were outstanding. A smaller role for Gene Hackman was the cherry on top. Summary: (3/5) The story was OK and the cast was excellent, but the film was just too long. A disappointed thumbs down.
One of the absolute best. A more in-depth look at the life of Wyatt Earp. Costner, as usual, does an epic job in this role.
