The Shadow Reviews
For an older film, I think the story line, acting, music and overall entertainment is great. I have watched this many times and enjoy it thoroughly every time.
Not a huge fan of Alec Baldwin per se, but this will always be a classic!
Popcorn flick that has poorly aged
I think time allows one to appreciate how weird this movie is. Clearly a result of a major Hollywood studio seeing the financial success of Tim Burton's two Batman movies and assuming if they found a dark, Noir, Art Deco, and puply equivalent, they'd also be rolling in money. It's a bit of a mess but a beautiful one filled with memorably imagery and strange characters.
The most underrated superhero film of all time. This movie based on the famous pulp fiction and radio superhero (who came almost a full decade before Superman and was the inspiration behind Batman) is an absolute gem with an all-star cast featuring Alec Baldwin, Peter Boyle, Tim Curry, and Ian McKellen, only The Shadow knows why other people didn't like it.
A much better film than it's reputation suggests. Alec Baldwin is pretty good as Lamont Cranston, aka The Shadow and he's supported by an excellent cast. Yeah, the script could have been tighter but overall it's a highly entertaining "superhero" film.
This has to be the most underrated movie in history It is so good that it should have been the first of many more films staring this character It's soundtrack is mind blowing gothic rock and The film itself sticks with you after you've watched it It's score is haunting and breathtaking in its crafting It's the best tribute to the finest era of cinema the pulps Alec Baldwin is stunningly handsome his eyes seeming as if they were special effects in there own right He wears a tux better then bond and the the character is just chilling Without this character there is no Batman the shadow pulls of a script that is high fantasy art and crime gangster tale all rolled in to one If you've never seen it you have missed out on an epic stick with it right up to the end and like me you will come back to it again and again Sam rami made dark-man because he wanted to make this character he knows what I think many know that if this character was given the dark knight treatment we would have a blockbuster unlike anything we have ever seen Who knows what the best movie made in 1994 is the shadow knows and you too should discover this diamond for itself It is my favourite film of all time and if I could give it an extra star I would It's hybrid use of multi themes and genres is like no other Packed with Crime /superhero heroics /exotic locations /beautiful dames with a hearts of gold /supernatural powers and magic there never will be another film like the shadow Until somebody remakes this movie and shows to the world what the greatest superhero in fiction truly looks like hahahahahah
This is a great movie version of a classic comic and radio mystery character.
Ahead of its time. Great movie! Better than most superhero movies today by far.
A fun if not occasionally goofy, movie.
At the time of writing this review I don't know much about the old radio show or the comic book that came out. So I don't know how fateful it is to the source material. But I do know entertainment and it succeeds in that. The story is fun, the characters are well written. The acting and effects are very good for the time. Now the villain is probably considered "problematic" by today's eyes. I might be wrong but I doubt it. But also wouldn't have been cooler if it was actually Genghis Khan as the villain. Kept alive by the sarcophagus he was locked in? But still, a slightly flawed but great flick.
Loved the pulpy dialogue and the 1930s NYC setting, but the film overall is rather stagnant. This screams for a proper remake.
Alec Baldwin tão adorável, num filme tão entediantemente chato, nem os filmes chineses e honcongueses de segunda linha que vivo a assistir na Netflix conseguem ser tão chatinhos...
Good film with some great dark comedic scenes. This is not your usual mindless superhero saves the day type of film (although spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler, the good guy wins). Theres enough uniqueness here to carry the day.
They failed to update it so it just comes off as cheesy.
This movie should have been way better then what it was. The concept is good enough to pass for a decent movie but yet it failed. You know your movie is bad when the toys for kids are a lot better.
The Shadow is a mess whose only major memorable element is Alec Baldwin playing a superhero. The story is predictable, the characters aren't the most fleshed out and the screenplay, while not cringy, isn't amazing either. And that's disappointing seeing how it's a David Koepp script However, the stunning visual style, cool special effects, worthy performances, stylishly badass moments and wonderful production design & art direction make it a movie that, disappointing as it might've been that executives wouldn't let Sam Raimi direct it*, is still worth checking out at the end of the day, easy as it might be to dismiss it as just a knockoff of Tim Burton's Batman movies. *It is rather hilarious in hindsight to think that Sam Raimi didn't get the chance to direct this movie whose script was provided by David Koepp. Come 2002 and guess which webslinging superhero they're translating to the big screen.
The Shadow Knows!!!! Great 40's style comic movie.
Problematic narrative elements aside, I think one can still appreciate how weird this movie is. Clearly a result of a major Hollywood studio seeing the financial success of Tim Burton's two Batman movies and assuming if they found a dark, Noir, Art Deco, and puply equivalent, they'd also be rolling in money. It's a mess but a beautiful one filled with memorably imagery and strange characters.
