Nobody's Fool Reviews

An absolutely charming film. A slice of life story done perfectly with great script, casting, directing, and more. One of my most favourite movies of all time.

One of the best small town movies ever made.

Overall, what begins as a slow-paced story about an old man with a limp soon transforms into something far greater than I could have ever expected. It's a touching story about family, friendships and loyalty. Paul Newman once again delivers a fun, likeable and charming character to the screen. While slow to begin with, the film delivers a strong payoff and reward by the third act. There are moments where I generally laughed out loud and other moments that felt gripping, dramatic and heartfelt. In the end, it's just a fun and lovable film that packs great rewards for those who invest in it.

The perfect film. Beautiful in every way

What a cast of great actors, even the minor roles. Watching a grown man actually grow is some of Paul Newman's best work. Rarely get stories this well done.

Paul Newman has had a career filled with classic roles, from "The Hustler" to "Cool Hand Luke" to "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" to "The Verdict," and I would argue that his role as Sully in "Nobody's Food" is among his best. Newman plays a divorced small town handyman hustling for jobs, dealing with a bum knee, who's halfheartedly fooling around with the wife (Melanie Griffith) of an ex-boss (an unbilled Bruce Willis), who estranged son unexpectedly turns up with grandkids he's never met. It may sounds like soap opera pablum, but it's so much richer. "Nobody's Fool" is a perfect example of a character driven film and not plot driven. It's all about the characters with no real driving narrative, other than following Sully around town over the course of several days. The characters are all flawed humans, but utterly endearing. After spending a couple hours with Newman, Griffith, Willis, Newman's landlady (Jessica Tandy), the cop with a chip on his shoulder (Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and Newman's son (Dylan Walsh), you just want to continue being around these people and see where their lives go. I really just love all these people. On the technical behind the camera side, "Nobody's Fool" was directed and adapted by Robert Benton, who wrote classics such as "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Superman: The Movie" and wrote & directed movies such as "Kramer vs. Kramer" and "Twilight" (the detective movie with Paul Newman, Gene Hackman, Susan Sarandon, and Reese Witherspoon, not the sparkly vampire movie). Benton once again delivers a movie that has depth, but presented with an unpretentiousness that recalls classic Hollywood films of Howard Hawks, Otto Preminger, or Ernst Lubitsch. The film's music by Howard Shore is among my all-time favorite scores. It's light, charming, and playful, yet also soulful, which perfectly compliments the tone of the film. And cinematographer John Bailey ("American Gigolo" "The Accidental Tourist" "In the Line of Fire" "As Good as it Gets") brings a lushness to this ordinary snow covered small town. Overall, "Nobody's Fool" is a pretty irresistible film that I think would appeal to just about everyone. It may be a little too saccharine to be perfect, but it's pretty darn close a perfect film.

Great sleeper movie. The plot sounded bland, but it was a really awesome movie.

Feels a part of a cinematic community from unresolved plot strings that might branch out across different stories emitted from the sole, standalone focus of Paul Newman's character. Of course, such expansive concept out of sudden intrigue is not particularly dated for the medium at the time but the story as its own still delivers what matters to the main hero. A narrowing, wide range characterization nicely structures a solidly directed, amending story of reconnecting to the past readied to look forward thanks to an excellent cast and how they performed at one of their best. (B+)

By far, an exquisite movie, nuanced with rich characters and the dismal upstate NY that I grew up with. Paul Newman, Bruce Willis, Melanie Griffin, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Jessica Tandy round out an all-star cast.

Nobody's Fool is a decent film. It is about a stubborn man past his prime who reflects on his life of strict independence and seeks more from himself. Paul Newman and Jessica Tandy give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. Robert Benton did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the drama and humor.

Hometown character study delivers with Paul Newman offering a masterclass on understated charm. Well written, and an interesting ensemble, Nobody's Fool sends a message in a bottle about family values, and deliverance from the past.

Fantastic adaptation of the great book. Funny heartwarming and really clever.

Nobody’s Fool has a familiar tone to it. In fact, if I didn’t know better, I’d swear I actually watched this movie sometime in the past. It is a story about a curmudgeon played by Paul Newman, who lives in a small town where everybody knows everyone else. He has a number of close friends and also some friendly rivalries, and he spends the film trying to connect with his estranged son. It feels like a plot I’ve seen many times before, but Paul Newman elevates a lot of the emotional moments. He has this ability to play a scene with anger and yet he gives you just enough of a hint that underneath that anger is sadness, regret, and so many other complex emotions. There isn’t a ton of story to Nobody’s Fool. We see a few relationships grow and at least one fall apart. However, there’s something about the quaint tone of the film that makes all of this feel like stuff that happens every other day in this close-knit community. Nobody’s Fool is the kind of movie that I thought was going to get boring, but I managed to stay engaged through the entire thing. There was enough depth to the main character that I wanted to see if he could turn his life around and start making some good decisions. This is the kind of movie I like to compare to comfort food. It’s nice and pleasant to watch, it makes you feel good, and even gives you a few laughs along the way. It’s never going to be a favorite of mine, but I’d be happy to watch it again on a quiet day at home.

Really solid movie with great performance by Paul Newman.

I am not sure what all the hype is about this movie. It was some what entertaining, but was too transparent. I kept wondering about how poor the direction was when I was not absorbed in the plot. I did like the final vindication, but ultimately I was wondering when it would end. It did have a strong cast that I felt was squandered on such a silly film.

Paul Newman at his best.

This is a beautiful adaptation of Richard Russo's novels, in its portrait of a very Russo-esque protagonist and of a small town in the rust belt northeast. Philip Seymour Hoffman shines in one of his first roles, and Philip Bosco is another of my favorites in the role of the local judge. On the other end of the spectrum, it was Jessica Tandy's last movie, she died before it was released, and it is a fine tribute to her. But of course it's Newman's movie, and he's wonderful as Sully. My favorite movie to watch around the holidays as it is set between Thanksgiving and New Year's.

A well-written, solidly-cast flick about never being too old to change. Newman's performance is full of charisma and genuine charm that you can't help but root for him, even when he's in the wrong. 3.5/5 stars

I've seen it upwards to 8 ~10 times, I think... There are moments where his performance is so brilliantly sublime that it puts to shame almost every other actor on the planet. The feelings he evokes from seemingly doing absolutely nothing (oh, but he's doing EVERYTHING needed to be done!) are inescapably mesmerizing ... a pure genius and master of his trade!

Disappointing. Yes, the setting of North Bath seemed real enough, but that's about as far as the verisimilitude reached. Despite all of those raves about Newman inhabiting the role of Sully, for me, Newman seemed like Newman, not Sully. And most of the relationships seemed like novelistic contrivances.
