The Quest Reviews

Apr 24, 2025

Frank Dux is the worst writer in the history of all forms of media ever.

Cinematic masterpiece. No holes in the plot line, acting was first class. How did this not win 6 Oscars

"The Quest" is undoubtedly the best Jean Claude Van Damme movie I've ever seen. Compared to this film, other great titles like "Kickboxer" or "Bloodsport" simply pale in comparison, as "The Quest" ascends to an entirely new level of complexity. At its core is a significant story—an epic hero's journey that profoundly changes the main character. He undergoes a myriad of trials, growing emotionally and personally until he becomes the great man we see at the beginning of the film; indeed, the entire story unfolds through an extended flashback. The characters are almost all memorable, especially the two buccaneers, embodying the classic cunning duo of the cat and the fox. Dobs is a wonderfully flawed character who, despite appearances, undergoes a profound transformation during the movie. The theme of the journey—a long adventure in exotic locales—is rendered in a memorable way, and the backstory of Christopher Dubois is genuinely moving. The final martial arts tournament is a steroid-enhanced version of what you see in "Bloodsport," and the ultimate villain is terrifying—a warrior of unimaginable power, might, and strength, with a truly insane costume. The nations are represented magnificently, like watching the fighting game of my dreams come to life. This film is a crescendo of emotions, with stunning costumes and cinematography. The soundtrack is the best I've ever heard in a Van Damme martial arts film, easily on par with "Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story." I highly recommend this spectacular film.

I thought this was one of his best movies, like the tournament fights and everything. The story was good.

Nota: 4

Although the Quest shared a somewhat concept to Bloodsport, that even the story fell rather flat.

A PG-13 attempt to cash in on the Mortal Kombat frenzy of the early to mid 90s. The best parts take place in NY and on the Island, where character development is deeper than the crest of the actors biceps compared to the rest of the movie.

Deserves more credit, the film is shot surprisingly well. It's a heist and martial arts tournament movie all in one. The supporting cast is as good as you will ever find in martial arts movie. James Remar is believable even with what seems footage was left on the cutting room floor. It's acceptable as the movie comes in at around an hour and a half. It would have suffered if drawn out for more drama. Rodger Moore & Jack McGee as the opertunest theifs clumsy theifs and Janet Gunn playing the adventuring writer that doesn't serve a shallow love interest to the ripping muscles of the alpha male. This movie has the Ingredients sprinkled in of just the right amounts. It isn't dated like most of the 80s & 90s action movies. It lacks any cringe of exploitation.

One of JCVD's weakest and less action packed outings.

The Quest is Jean Claude Van Damme's directorial debut, and, judging by its somnolent pace and inability to generate any energy, it may also be his last venture behind the camera. While no one could reasonably expect this to be a "good" film in the traditional sense of the term, it comes as a surprise that The Quest is actually boring -- even the fight scenes lack panache. The level of high-tension violence expected from a Van Damme film is blunted by poor direction, uninspired camera work, and a bland villain. During the climactic battle, it's difficult to stifle a yawn. (Van Damme must stick with acting).

Rewatching this movie today it feels like Bloodsport 2.0 but not in a bad way a must see for Van Damme fans.

Some Bloodsport 1 stuff .. another MMA movie.

Not as bad as you would suspect with JCVD behind the camera. The first half of the film pleasantly chugs along with Roger Moore hamming it up. The film is basically a better Street Fighter movie or a JCVD film made for kids.

Its a story about a master thief, played by Roger Moor (007 James Bond) who uses a fighter and trainer to get close to an ancient artifact during a martial arts tournament. Its not obvious who the villain is until he gets caught in the act, which forces Van Damme to have to fight for their life instead of the same artifact as the prize, but that's the gem of it. Some times those who you think are helping you, are really harming you. Well worked with an early twentieth century/turn of the century story background on top. I'd definitely see this.

I liked it but it's kinda cheesy

The film is descent and the fights are good. This was a good film but not a great film. It just was Jean ripping off his own film Bloodsport. That's what hurts the movie so much and the story was not well thought out. But it still is fun to watch.

Apr 26, 2016

Umm...watch Bloodsport instead ;-)

Watched this for HDTGM. Huge missed opportunity for JCVD. Lazy script. Sloppy direction. Worthless plot points. Worst of all, the fight sequences lacked excitement. The final showdown was a letdown. The end of the movie laughable. Roger Moore is the lone saving grace in a wasted performance.
