Girls Town Reviews
This movie is a beautiful slice of REAL life, and it's really inspiring
I like the story but the directing and script were not as good as other elements.
I'm really glad I managed to watch this on the last day before it was removed from Netflix streaming. This movie feel so real, even though it's dated. It's equally painful and exhilarating to watch the girls deal with things, sometimes in ways that are unhealthy but they work with what's available to them. Lili Taylor is pretty cool.
A classic of early American indie realism films. Took forever to be easily available again but it's on Netflix streaming now. The slang and clothing clearly dates but the issues are fairly consistent today and the performances are spot on. (A film about a group of girls in a working class community. Like Foxfire but hewing way closer to home without the gang formation aspect that occasionally came across as vengeful wish-fulfillment.)
An empowering feminist tale made authentic by the actresses participation in the scripting. Holds appeal, partly because it could so easily have been an uplifting message movie but it refuses to be so simplistic.
One of THE best improvised films ever! GREAT performances from Lili Taylor, Anna Grace and Bruklin Harris. So real. So true. Like the tagline says : This ain't no 90210
A great film with an amazing performance by Lili Taylor. She is hilarious and heart breaking as Patti the 20-something unwed mother who's trying her damnedest to finally graduate from high school. I wish she was in more films. I miss her so. The soundtrack kicks major ass, as well. Check it out.
I missed this when it came out but have seen it a couple of times on IFC. An authentic, non-condescending portrayal of high school life. Relatable high school girls, not bubblegum, one-dimensional teen flick bullshit. Definitely worth seeing. [ifc BF twice - 06/07?]
So gritty and tragic. Life int he inner city is tough for these three frined. And after the suicide of a fourth friend they try to move on the best way they can. Then a revelation occurs that changes eveything.
My rating is based on when I watched this years ago; I was young like 12-14. Anyways, from what I remember this movie is good. All of the characters are going through difficult times; dealing w/ issues, they really can't handle by themselves so the friends help each other out. Everyone's acting is good. The actress Aunjanue Ellis who played Nikki, I use to think N'Bushe Wright played that character.
