Selena Reviews

definitely recommend this documentary, well implemented and actors that lookalike her actual family

Selena’s authentic and tragic storytelling, especially considering the film was made two years after Selena Quintanilla’s untimely death, is decently spot on. Jennifer Lopez’s performance as Selena is nothing short of spectacular, showcasing her early acting prowess before her meteoric rise to her own pop stardom. Grading: B

While it may lack the more developed style of storytelling modern audiences have come to expect from critically acclaimed biopics that came later, Selena still manages to offer a compelling narrative and an informative look into the life of a cultural icon. However, as a story and film, this is one I would only watch again under special circumstances.

Loved how this is filled with color and everything pops. Great camerawork, very memorable set pieces especially the performances, and the whole Texas/Mexico location was great. Excellent cinematography and the acting is first rate especially by Selena and her father. They own this pic especially Lopez who is filled with charm, bubbly energy, and has great prescence. Whenever it is her and her father it's the best moments of the film. The music is top notch and super memorable. Overall the direction really is first rate. Where this struggles a little bit is the editing which is solid overall but it struggles throughout at times, but again the direction and charm of the actors carry this through it. This has a focus problem. The first 30 minutes is about her father, than the family, back to the father, than Selena, than her husband, back to Selena, etc. It definetley needed to stay focused on Selena more. On top of that it can feel like stuff is just happening at certain points while their on the road. Also, it feels like while this does a great job staying focused on the family and looks inward, this needed to show a bit more of Selena's effects on the outside world. It feels like we see the after effects of her rise to stardom without actually seeing it at times. We take big jumps from a county fair to the #1 on the charts without actually seeing her record or become known until VERY late in the pic. You could probably cut the first 30 minutes and add more about that and it would help quite a bit. As it stands it's a great biopic that is a great introduction to anyone who doesn't know who Selena is and wants to learn about her, is a fan of dramas, musical biopics, the director, or any actors in this. Easily Jennifer Lopez's finest hour.

Selena served as two things. It was my introduction to Selena (the artist with the beautiful spirit) and voice and it was my introduction to Jennifer Lopez (The beautiful Performer). Selena is a great movie elevated by the concert scenes mainly but it also serves as a cautionary tale that people aren't always your friends and you should live and love for today. This film should not exist only because Selena should still be here but this is the only film after Titanic that moved me emotionally as a child and later adult. I'm curious as to whether or not any of you hold this movie in high regard as part of Jennifer's Filmography it really will stand the test of time.

Truly Jennifer Lopez was meant to play the role of ‘Selena.' She has undeniable warmth, charm, & sincerity. Loved this film so much.

Amazing movie. This biographical true story film about, Selena Quintanilla starring (Jennifer Lopez) is about a musical Mexican-American family in Texas. Her father, Abraham playing her dad is (Edward James Olmos), who realizes that his young daughter is talented and begins performing with her at small venues. She finds success and falls for her guitarist, Chris Perez (Jon Seda), who draws the ire of her father. Seeking mainstream stardom, Selena begins recording an English-language album which, she would never complete. Tragically due to a thief lying and killing trader that she trusted.

She really should have won an Oscar for this performance. The music is great, fun to listen to. The scenes are poignant & fun. Really all time favorite!

Selena Quintanilla-Perez was the true queen of Tejano Growing up in the 1950s it was hard for Mexicans to integrate with the rest of America, when it came to music many only wanted to hear Mexican tunes Abraham was a former member of the Dinos band, gave up his career, got married and had kids Then he got the idea to teach them how to play instruments and sing on their own Selena his youngest daughter rose slowly to stardom with her impeccable voice becoming a huge sensation in the Latin community given that not many women were successful at being artists As she entered her 20s Selena wanted her independence from her overbearing father and true love Of course he was very against this yet Selena wanted no more of others saying what's good for her Soon after her career took off and then the inevitable happened with her former fan club President killed her 25 years since this biopic came out it had developed such a strong fan base with not just the late artist's music but actress Jennifer Lopez being very authentic in the lead role I remember watching it in high school but only in spades Now I truly understand why this movie is so beloved by many I still can't believe this was one of Jennifer Lopez's first starring roles despite her not actually singing any of the songs She is absolutely perfect in this and it gave her the courage to pursue her music career afterwards Even if she got initial backlash at first being Puerto Rican playing a Mexican-American she knocked it out of the park along with Constance Marie as her mother, Marcela and Edward James Olmos as Abraham, her father The film has aged amazingly with clever use of editing, color scheme, the beautiful score by Dave Grusin, some very intimate moments full of emotion, Lopez looking exactly like this artist from her hair to her on-stage wardrobe to the mannerisms and the amount of respect director Gregory Nava has for telling this story It really is so sad the famous Mexican pop sensation passed away so young at 23 But her family since then has struggled to keep her legacy alive Being Mexican is hard, you speak the language wrong people will eat you alive for not being authentic, it's exhausting to be your true self, there will always be barriers for people to get past The movie even earned a golden globe nomination It sets itself apart with its depiction of the Mexican American and Tejano cultural experience Selena was the true queen of tejano and her influence on the music industry will be forever treasured This is one of m my favorite biopics making a candid portrayal of a beloved singer gone too soon

Although this movie came out 25 yrs ago, I never saw the entire movie. I know about the real about the life of Selena. I thought Jennifer Lopez made a convincing portrayal of Selena. Sad that her life ended so tragically at such a young age.
