The Funeral Reviews
Three brothers; one led, one died, one followed It's 1939 New York City and three siblings of a gangster family are at a loss They start plotting payback It's believed that rival gangster Gaspare (Benicio Del Toro) is responsible for Johnny's death, Chez and Ray set out to find and punish the thugs who killed him, despite the pleadings of their wives As the two get to the bottom of the mystery, Ray must deal with an increasingly unstable Chez Much of the story unfolds through flashbacks This is a bruising exploration of vengeance and the actors are spot-on with good performances But it's only for big gangster-film enthusiasts The ending is very morbid too
just awful from beginning to end. one of the worst ever, sorry!
This film has an outstanding cast. Christopher Walken, Vincent Gallo, Chris Penn. Isabella Rossellini, Annabella Sciorra, Gretchen Mol, Benecio Del Toro, and an absolutely brilliant performance by the Late Chris Penn, who sadly never got his due respect. This guy could act!!! Definitely a must watch for any movie buff.
Chris Penn's acting is unforgettable in this film he should have won an academy award. Definitely Abel's best work.
Although it mostly feels like a minor crime film, featuring familiar themes and less than great direction, "The Funeral" has certain engaging moments and eventually takes a notable turn towards the dark that sets it apart from similar movies. The cast, which includes Christopher Walken and Benicio Del Toro, is pretty good, with Chris Penn standing out in a very powerful performance.
The Funeral has great acting, scenery and plot. Abel Ferrara sets a perfect mood for this film. It keeps you entertained throughout the entire movie. It is especially amazing how he was able to make you sympathize with truly awful human beings. Well Done!!
A mafia story about the Templo brothers. What makes the difference is that the characters in this film ask themselves about life, death, God. There are dialogues with some deepness. The story begins with the funeral of the younger brother. Jane, Ray's wife who is opposite to the violent conduct of the brothers, predicts how is going to be the end of Chez of one of the brothers based in their father's own end.
Not the clearest narrative ever, I felt kind of detached while watching it. Chris Penn was pretty good though.
Absolutely riveting from start to finish. Abel Ferrara's take on New York City gangsters is unlike any other film of its genre. Chris Penn is phenomenal and powerful. Chris Walken is fantastic as always. The business needs more gangsters films; this is a great one. See it.
I wasnt expecting it to end the way it did so that was koo. Overall I'd say the film is so-so but the performances from the main cast make it worth the watch
There is no point or reason for this movie to exist. Too hard to follow the story. Not worth the effort.
An alright story surrounded by amazing performances. Walken, Penn, Del Toro, Gallo, Sciorra and Rossellini feel so natural and authentic in there characters. But the story loses focus at times and unlike Bad Lieutenant where it helped the story this holds it back.
D-rate depression era mobster movie. This movie was just awful and had no point whatsoever. Not that you're likely to come across this film, but in the event you do, turn it off immediately.
Dark, mesmerizing, sinister and overlooked, The Funeral shows the true animalistic and violent nature of those in the underworld. And the existential questions are also a great bonus. All in all, a subtle and smart gangster movie. A fantastic mix.
