The Negotiator Reviews
The Negotiator is one of those classic thrillers that still holds up well today. The plot is engaging from the start, throwing you into a tense, high-stakes standoff where trust and deception play a big role. The pacing is solid, though it stretches a bit in parts, but the setup and execution make up for it. F. Gary Gray's direction keeps the tension tight, balancing action and drama without overcomplicating things. The cinematography isn't flashy, but it works well in capturing the claustrophobic feel of the hostage situation, making you feel right there with the characters. What really makes this movie stand out is the acting. Samuel L. Jackson delivers an intense, gripping performance that makes it easy to connect with his character and root for him. Kevin Spacey plays off him perfectly, creating a dynamic where their back-and-forth feels natural and engaging. The supporting cast is strong too, though some characters feel a bit underdeveloped. The script does a good job keeping the dialogue sharp and the tension high, but at times, it leans into familiar tropes that might feel predictable. The score and sound design do their job well, enhancing the mood without being too overpowering. While the soundtrack isn't particularly memorable, the way sound is used to heighten key moments is effective. Overall, The Negotiator is a well-crafted thriller with strong performances and a gripping story. It might not be flawless, but it delivers where it counts, making it an easy movie to rewatch and appreciate.
What a great movie. Excellent acting all around with some pretty well known actors. The scarey part is it was totally believable. Well written script that is unpredictable and very suspenseful without a lot of violence. Great movie. Highly recommend this one.
Edge of the seat from the first moment to the last. No one is pretending this is what a real negotiator would do, but hey, it's a movie! Class direction, lighting, cast, screenplay and acting. You won't guess who the 'bad guy' is until it is revealed to you.
The Negotiator is a pretty solid piece of action entertainment. It looks good and marches on nicely through the scenes. It's just that the entire premise is deflated by making the wrong guy the protagonist. It's very hard to sympathize with Jackson's character playing with other people's lives and the resources of an entire city just because he's doing the right thing.
One of the most underrated movie ever. Just great!
What a movie!!! The acting and the plot, I was never bored watching it. In fact, this movie made me sign up for rotten tomatoes, just to give it five stars! Amazing
Loved this. A lot of fun and on the edge of my seat moments.
A good film, but not a classic by any means. Kevin Spacey is great. Such a scene-stealer. And you can rarely go wrong with Sam L Jack. Was pleasantly surprised at how convincing he pulled off grief at a scene involving a funeral. The film does get a bit claustrophobic, same-y and a bit boring at times (it’s far too long). It also doesn’t quite come over re: its surprise reveals/twists. The stakes never feel that real either which I think is to the film’s detriment.
This ranks up in my top 10 favorite 'cop movies.' Also, outside of Pulp Fiction, this is one of the most iconic Samuel L. Jackson performances. To be fair, the movie is quite run of the mill without its two leads, Samuel L. and Kevin Spacey. So, if you're looking for a realistic cop drama, look elsewhere... This movie is purely meant to capitalize on strengths of two legendary actors in their prime. Definitely worth a watch...
It's back to 1998 for the brilliant 'The Negotiator'. SYNOPSIS: 'In a desperate attempt to prove his innocence, a skilled police negotiator accused of corruption and murder takes hostages in a government office to gain the time he needs to find the truth.' At the time of it's release Spacey and Jackson were arguably up there as two of the best actors of their generation, so there was a lot of anticipation for this film on its release. And no one was let down by the final product. This is an action thriller which is stupidly intense at times, a bit like it's lead actors. It's a typical 90s action thriller which is predominantly carried by the lead actors within it. Think most of Nic Cage's films from a similar time. My only real criticism is the run time. It's too long and there's a lot of filler along the way which really wasn't needed. A film which could be seen as a modern classic if it wasn't for the recent revelations about Spacey's behaviour during these years. 8/10
A Classic Thriller. Everything is really well done. This really has 2 main issues that hold it back from being amazing. First whole Giamatti & Jackson are excellent the rest of the cast is very well done but sort of all just blend in save for Spacey. The villains also feel kind of hammed a little bit but are still well acted also. Finally this does drag and get a bit convoluted in the second half. It mentions a lot of names and characters like Nate and others who we barely got to see or not even at all and it just gets wordy and hard to follow sometimes despite being focused 90% of the time on Danny. While the dialogue is strong and smart enough to carry the thriller plot the complexity and lack of clues along the way to make it obvious or in depth character of others involved hold it back and make it hard to connect to the complex web of fraud. But it does make sense, keeps you on the edge of the seat consistently the whole way (but it doesn't really ramp it up), and the twist is still good but not great. Anyone who is a fan of any actors in this, the director, or Thrillers will like this a lot. It's really well done.
F. Gary Gray of 'Furious 8' and 'Set It Off' fame directs Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey Who's the real negotiator here? Danny Roman is well known as the best police force negotiator in Chicago He finds out someone is embezzling money from a disability fund but the individual is found deceased Danny is then framed for the crime but according to Internal Affairs he's found guilty of holding the weapon Danny then makes his own hostage situation in his own precinct to clear his name and he will only talk to Chris Sabien The situation continues to increase as tensions rise on both sides I love how suspenseful this is with Gray making the hostage situation seem way more complicated The scope is really nice too with the city of Chicago looking as big as it looks It overstays its welcome at 140 min but I wasn't bored once The performances by Jackson and Spacey are terrific, they show a great battle of wits using their own tactics against each other One has a bluff to match their own while the twists and turns make their way in a clever screenplay A pedestrian script yes and maybe there's gaping plot holes and a few contrivances but it remains tension filled with smart action
Samuel L surrounded by a bunch of dirty cops and idiots for 2 hours, frustrating watch lol but a good movie
The Negotiator has got some suspense like in many films of an action genre for the most part. I'm not saying that all action films have suspense in them like they should. They just haven't managed to get them to the top. However I really like this one. This one's suspenseful. The plot is very evocative and makes the direction look unique. There are many scenes that are evocative especially when Danny Roman has to prove his innocence in the hostage situation. This also a suspenseful ending that really does fill your skin. If you love Samuel L. Jackson and Kevin Spacey you'll like this one. I've heard of a film that stars the same cast in this but I haven't seen it yet. It's called A Time to Kill and I think it's directed by Joel Schumacher. So anyways, that is The Negotiator. This is a good one.
An absolutely amazing movie - thrilling the whole way through
Solid 90s flick where expert negotiator Jackson is framed to cover up cop crimes. Spacey comes in as a second negotiator to get to the bottom of the crimes. Ron Rifkin is an excellent bad guy.
Gosh. I remember watching this years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. For SLJs performance as his classic SLJackson, what's not to love? I can remember citing lines with my buddies in grade-school and high-school; we would seek every Jackson film we could find and watch over and over! Unfortunately Spacey keeps me from viewing this one again tonight. If only I didn't know what I know now..... What a bummer to be as grossly disappointed that I just can't. Tough to find a film that won't include those of whom we assumed were the greats now marred by their disgusting behaviors off the screen. Shame the film industry has become so seedy and filthy for participants yet still unchecked.
Samuel L Jackson saves this predictable action thriller from becoming just another melodramatic action thriller.
