Funny Games Reviews
"Funny Games" is a strange movie but it is made with skill and kept me on the edge of my seat. I didn't know what direction it was heading at any time, and it left me confused at a few points too with some of the creative choices and fourth wall breaks. I think the movie is a disturbing watch, but it managed to make me uneasy without being too showy. I was impressed by how the movie is often really quiet and only implies horrifying actions offscreen. The movie got under my skin often and kept me uncomfortable with a bizarre mix of thrills and even dark humor. Overall, this is a fascinating movie that is intense and thought-provoking and is a truly unique experience.
A difficult watch. I can’t say that I enjoyed it, but it definitely got under my skin and lingered in my mind for a long time. As a fan of the director (especially his film “The White Ribbon”) I would definitely recommend it, but for the faint of heart or the impatient, I would say to look elsewhere.
Boasting a committed cast and evocative photography, "Funny Games" has a way of being terrifying even before the actual terror begins and of being violent without actually depicting it. Despite certain not so believable moments (e.g. Anna not making an attempt to get help when she's outside towards the start), a less tight last act and unexploited fourth wall breaking, it's an overall really engaging, unsettling thriller, which may undermine Haneke's goal of commenting on violence in the media.
A movie designed to upset the audience. But I respect it for its originality.
Funny Games is quite literally a parody of itself, and how the film industry portrays violence, torture, sadism and pornography in an acceptable, and even enjoyable way.
A very decent horror film that plays out in a scary way. I saw this version after watching the Hollywood remake. What I can’t get my head around is how the remake gets terrible reviews but this version is acclaimed. They are literally identical except the language. It makes me wonder why they did a remake but either way, you can’t rate the films any differently because they are absolutely identical. Watched on DVD.
The film was so good that they felt the need to make another one
Anyone who enjoys this movie needs professional counseling.
This movie is a disgrace to cinematography. it forces the viewer to suffer, where they are constantly waiting for a relief that does not come, it is not enjoyable at all, the actions just happens and that's it, we don't get any meaningful answers as to why what happens. moreover, it cuts into the greatest value, which is the family, which is repeatedly insulted during the film. it only showed suffering and nothing else. if I could, I would destroy all copies, ban the film everywhere, and lock the director (Michael Haneke) in a prison. Shame on you Haneke, you are a disgrace to filmmaking
An absolutely horrifying and genius film. I've never seen a film that seems to be a commentary on itself. The mock horror movie is very common (and usually not very good) but it seems that Funny Games takes itself more seriously than the others. Due to it being a commentary on how we see violence in media, I'm quite ashamed about how much I enjoyed this. But that's just be the genius of Funny Games, it proves it's point.
Dare I say a classic psychological horror film
I'm not that big into foreign movies but man this was some absolutely crazy, intense stuff. A truly disturbing film that can only be watched once only. I'll admit that the second half does fall a little flat but the first is some of the most rivoting piece of cinema you will see in a long time.
This movie takes breaking the 3rd wall to a whole new meaning being hysterical yet chilling. The killers unlike some horror movies have no compassion, remorse or sympathy.Truely a must watch 10/10.
The most uncomfortable movie I've ever had to sit through, and the first movie I ever considered turning off, but like, in a good way. This movie's horror is so unique and well done.. Would I watch it again? no lol. Am i glad I watched it? Absolutely. This movie will give you depression just fyi
Sometimes no matter how well a film is made and no matter how talented the individuals in front of and behind the camera, it goes beyond what is acceptable in your own moral universe, and you shut down. That happened to me about halfway through this motion picture, when an event happens (thankfully offscreen) that is so vile that I turned to stone. And there's more to come. Haneke is an award-winning, world-renowned director, and some have declared this a masterpiece. Perhaps the feelings it has elicited in me is exactly what the filmmakers were after, so it could be construed a success. I've seen many movies with similar themes, so why was I so repelled? In restrospect, it comes down to a couple scenes. A few times the main antagonist breaks the fourth wall and talks to the audience as if they were an accomplice. And without giving too much away, there is one scene where time is reversed that feels so gimmicky and unfair that it cemented my repulsion. Movies like this are impossible to review fairly - the movie is brilliantly made. Performances are amazing and award worthy, particularly Lothar and Frisch. They are incredible! But why utilize so much talent on this material? I am certain they have their reasons, but in the end it doesn't matter. Art is subjective. An American remake was done 10 years later starring Naomi Watts and Tim Roth, by the same director. While part of me feels compelled to watch it for comparison sake, I don't know if I want to subject myself to this material a second time.
Well written, acted, directed, but very bleak. Also I hated the asides to the camera.
Desastrously bad. Looks like a movie made by first year cinema students that think so mich of themselves thinking they are making a conceptual masterpience. It's tedious, slow, very bad acting, very bad writing.
biased because this is one of my favorite horror films ever
a fascinating plot of psychopathic horror that is inescapable in cinematic logic. No CGI, no Monsters, no weapons, no metaphisics... just some fancy young humans are needed to fulfill their plan. The abysses of the human psyche are relentlessly brought to the end. The violence is creeping into it in tiny little steps. You find yourself hopelessly trapped in the scenario as if you were part of the movie.
Tough watch. Everything just lingers and makes the whole experience much more tense. Just wow.
