Happiness Reviews

Apr 4, 2025

Oh come on, disgustingly stupid movie. Not real people. Is everyone so consumed by sex and jerking off? Is sex really so important to you? Then you'll love this nonsense. Maybe it's me... ?

Filme mais ou menos, o roteiro é mais ou menos, o Filme tem um drama um pouco forte, que parece tem não tem muita relevância.

One of my favourite films. Great actors, love the dialogues.

Other than Splice, this is the only highly acclaimed film I would call genuinely, perversely disgusting. Where I'll give Happiness far credit is the movie was meant to push your boundaries and clearly wanted to go somewhere you just don't go. That doesn't change how wildly gross Happiness is, smart film or not. I learned nothing. Was Kids messed up? Definitely. But it had a message. I'd give it 0 stars if not for some 5/5 acting and, as always, strong work from Solondz.

Bold. Disturbing. This is such a risqué piece of art. Happiness is unlike anything I've ever seen. Philip Seymour Hoffman was such an amazing talent. He gave his usual outstanding performance in this picture. Dylan Baker delivered a performance that will make your stomach turn and your skin crawl. I certainly don't envy anyone who plays such a disgusting character, but I do admire him and the courage it took to do so. This is what acting is all about. Being someone other than yourself. Well, I'm certain this is the farthest away Mr. Baker has ever gotten from himself as an actor. Brilliant work! The final scene between him and young Justin Elvin is one of the most well acted, uncomfortable scenes in the history of film. Happiness is, without a doubt, a great motion picture. I highly recommend for those who enjoy the unconventional takes in the medium of film. 97/100

You have to be on another level mentally to find any joy or entertainment in this---and I'm a nihilist. I have one rule---don't mess with children, let alone make entertainment out of such depravity. I stay football stadiums away from anything the filmmaker has made since.

"Happiness" is a completely original movie that is a one-of-a-kind viewing experience. This movie is so aggressively bleak and bizarre, yet also super disturbing and even darkly humorous. It brings some challenging ideas to the forefront, which at the time of its release were controversial, but I think it is certainly worth exploring. The film aims to showcase some really awful characters and how their desires are similar to most human beings in a twisted way. I think the writing in this movie is exceptional and the performances are unforgettable. I do feel the movie goes really far in a lot of ways, but also it makes sense why it wants to push boundaries. Overall, it is a movie that will certainly leave an impact on me and while it is a polarizing watch, I would recommend it to anyone who appreciates risky and bold cinema.

weird is not necessarily creative

I happened to have read this script years before the film was released, and though I loved it, I could not imagine how it could be made. The fact that it was, and so well, is a testament to Todd Solondz' genius.

This film is uncomfortable to watch at times and I definitely wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but is overall very witty and well done. Todd Solondz is a talented director and had the advantage of a great cast, all of the actors played their characters perfectly. Despite my positive review, I do have to say that I felt some of the disturbing scenes went a bit overboard. The acting was good as I mentioned, but it was almost TOO good and realistic to the point where I felt like I was eavesdropping on something I shouldn't. I feel the film would've been even better had some the scenes been toned down a bit, however of course it's not my decision to make. All that aside though, "Happiness" was uniquely strange in a pleasant way and I enjoyed it a lot!

I've never been so uncomfortable and disgusted, yet laughed so hard and been genuinely entertained!

Shocking and very extreme. Not a feel good movie whatsoever but a masterpiece. Excellent!

It's hard to imagine finding humor in pedophilia, rape, adultery, murder, dismemberment and social alienation, but Todd Solondz manages to do so in Happiness, a film filled with uncomfortable laughs. It's centered around three sisters living in New Jersey – a social outcast, a successful writer, and a housewife living a seemingly idyllic life. However, nothing seems to be what it appears to be as their lives, to varying degrees, spiral out of control. The cast, which includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Ben Gazzara, among others, dish out their lines with a droll dryness that can be found only in a Solondz film. The script is cringe-inducingly funny, the individual stories are interesting without exception, and the languid pacing allows the viewer to absorb all of the horrors presented. It is clearly not for all tastes (or most tastes, for that matter), but will be liked by anyone who has an appreciation for the unique stylings of Solondz.

I'm not sure what I'm feeling after watching this film, but it certainly isn't 'happiness'. A uniquely cynical take on personal satisfaction - personal flaws are presented as essentially universal and a key part of the human identity, but these flaws inevitably prevent each individual from reach their state of 'happiness'. Life becomes a a cycle of aimless wandering, searching for meaning when the characters themselves are actually preventing their own personal development. Everyone is doomed and desperate, struggling for desires that often come from rather immoral or selfish motivations, but each 'sympathetically pathetic' in their total inability to fight back against this natural order that Solondz presents. It's a desolate film, but also totally aware of its capability for dark comedy, relishing in tragic irony as the sole relief in what is otherwise a hell of repression and self-deceit. In short, you'll laugh, but you won't have a fun time. I like to think that Baker's Bill Maplewood is actually a darkly comic take on Peter Graves' Captain Clarence Oveur from Airplane!; "have you ever seen a grown man naked?" (3.5/5)

Shocking & controversial even before its release back in 1998. And it still is. A film with massive balls.

What the flip did I just watch? This is one of the most weirdest movies I've ever seen. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense and the ending was very abrupt. Maybe this movie wasn't for me. Theirs not really a story. It didn't feel like a movie, it just felt like an awkward experience with people you don't know. Maybe that's what they were trying to go for but I didn't like any of the characters. The acting was fine but in the end this isn't my type of movie that I could enjoy. If you did enjoy this I would like to here why. If you like weird nonsensical movies then this is for you but unfortunately it's not for me.

1001 movies to see before you die. Initially, I was intrigued, but then it took a turn for the perverse. Now I know why I've never heard of this movie. Impressive cast. It was on Internet Archives.

Happiness turns out to be a peculiar film in its way of telling stories. Everything revolves around an American family and especially the three sisters. A film that alternates scenes in the Seventh Heaven and scenes in which tough themes are treated, taboo, with a veil of directors.
