Supernova Reviews

Mar 30, 2025

Supernova feels like a wasted opportunity wrapped in decent visuals. The directing is all over the place, which makes sense given the messy production history, and it really shows. The pacing drags, making even the short runtime feel longer than it should. You can tell there were attempts to build tension or mystery, but the script just doesn’t give it enough fuel. The story lacks depth, and the characters feel like cardboard cutouts drifting through space. It tries to be a mix of sci-fi and psychological thriller, but it never really commits to either, leaving it floating in this weird limbo. On the plus side, the cinematography is surprisingly solid in parts. There are a few beautiful shots of space and the sun that really stand out, and the set design had potential. The acting isn’t terrible, but the cast doesn’t have much to work with, and it feels like everyone’s just going through the motions. As for the score and sound design, nothing really stood out, which isn’t great for a sci-fi film that should be using sound to build atmosphere. Overall, it’s a slow, visually decent film that struggles to say or do anything memorable.

Outstanding performances by James Spader and Angela Bassett make this a must see for science fiction fans.

Very original and exciting story. I don't know why others don't like it!

Supernova" receives a meager one-star rating, a verdict echoed in a disheartening review. Despite boasting a stellar cast, the film falters as the performances fail to live up to expectations. The special effects, even considering the time of release, fall below acceptable standards. The storyline itself is criticized for losing its way, leaving both the narrative and the viewer adrift in confusion. This cinematic endeavor appears to be a disappointing convergence of promising elements that, unfortunately, do not align to create a satisfying experience.

Supernova is like the worst parts of Star Trek with a little attempt at horror in space. James Spader and Angela Bassett make for an odd couple that end up sharing a pod in the end to escape and swapping some DNA.

Pure cheese despite a good cast.

An enjoyable movie that had decent visuals, decent acting, and a decent story which ultimately let me with a decent sci-fi flick.

Criminally underrated!

Basically a slasher movie in space with a villain that's not cool, fun, or scary. This is a generic deep space terror with a somewhat competent cast, okay effects and design that aren't quite fully utilized, and all finished with an expedient conflict and resolution that somehow drags on 15 minutes too long despite a runtime of just 90 minutes.

Fun sci fi. Quite erotic as well. If you don't analyze and compare it to death and just enjoy the characters. The story line has some very good twists and unexpected conclusions.

All it this movie is, is sex, naked people, random camera angle changes, boring long scenes of nothingness.

This movie is really good. The whole premise is original and there have been quite a few sci fi movies in recent years that have taken ideas from this movie. The movies whole premise is when we reach the limits of our existence, the universe has a contingency plan. Check it out.

Another great sci-fi movie with horrible reviews. Trust me it's worth watching.

Look, I hate most movies. I actually like this movie. True it isn't great but it is better than all the new Star Trek movies.

Ok little sci-go flick.

I didn't think this movie was bad. I like James Spader, and thought he gave a strong performance. I also like Angela Bassett and felt she was good as well. The supporting cast was also strong. I liked that Sweety (the computer) had a sense of humor, and I especially liked when it was describing the alien object to Bassett's character. That was some very cool sci fi sh...stuff. SPOILERS AHEAD However, the film did lapse into the very common science fiction/horror tropes of a nearly invincible bad guy/creature taking out all but one or two of the crew. It was a bit more original than most sci fi films, though not enough to overcome this tired story line. The ending was also a bit of a nice twist, though once again not enough to catapult the film into greatness. Still, I found it a solid film with some very intriguing twists, twists that i wish would have been explored in greater detail

No Oscar contender, but enjoyable for the genre. A very buff Spader and the wonderful Bassett

Considering how much ended up on the cutting room floor and the difficulties they had filming, I think they did well with this. Spaceships and good cast.

An older movie now on STARZ on Demand. Story line starts out OK. The cast is very interesting and most of the acting is above average. A good movie overall for the time period in which it was made. Maybe a good movie for an adult gathering of popcorn, other munchies and drinks.
