The Siege Reviews

Sep 26, 2024

Classic Denzel performance in a film that asks many questions we still deal with in 2024. My one criticism is that you have to suspend disbelief for much of the 3rd act to remain compelling. That being said, the movie was entertaining and enjoyable

Benning and Willis are terrible. Washington does not give one of his best performances. These things indicate the real problem here, just not very well written.

The character actors (Valley, Reddick, Shaloub and Proval) far outshone the stars' performances in this dull, clumsy, plodding movie. That's not ideal.

Lead by an all star trio this movie is really good. The thought of marshall law being put in place is crazy. Tim Treakle

2 Worst Denzel movie iv watched. Annette cannot act. Avoid all movies that stars Annette Bening. The story is so over the top with cliches from the 90's. I could only cringed my way through 20 minutes of this movie.

shitty "progressives" will be the end of humanity. the rotten people of rotten tomatoes won't let me speak my mind, facts, and truth. there is no "good" cancer - unless it's in a bad host.

Great movie and it's relevant to what's going on in the world today-2023

It's an excellent motion picture, The Siege, 1998 ...

It's not the most culturally sensitive film nor does it have a powerful message but it does have an strong cast that examines the reverberating effects of terrorist attacks in NYC due to effects of foreign policy in the Middle East. One made more eerie in that the film predates the terrorist attacks on 9/11. "It's easy to tell the difference between right and wrong. What's hard is choosing the wrong that's more right"

A very middling action film that with a good-hearted and sincere message, is too formulaic in it's script and screenplay. It plays out just like every other action/thriller film and sets up the story providing just enough story and character development in order to advance to the next scene and is shallow for doing so. Yes there are some good set pieces and yes the film does have a hopeful message of tolerance and terrorism lies within the few corrupted and not the whole of a people, but it's just not original or complex in it's approach. Still if you like Denzel Washington and most of his other action films then you will find this a digestible outting with enough thrills to keep you watching

A story that took a realistic and unrealistic approach to how fear can cripple and divide a nation and its people.

This crime movie was alright. Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Bruce Willis, Tony Shaloub, and the rest of the cast did a decent job in this movie. The plot of the movie was intense, kind of thrilling, and pretty dramatic. It wasn't as great as I thought it would be. If you haven't seen this movie yet, don't waste your time. It's not worth it.

Can't really emember when you can this cocktail of having Denzel with Bruce tag team in this rare jewel action tension packed jurisdiction in domestic security thriller that keep you buckle-up for a rocking ride through the slumps. Mexican standoff between FBI, CIA & millitary is the highlight of who have the biggest "balls" or ego...

FBI Special Agent Anthony Hubbard (Denzel Washington) and his Lebanese American partner, Frank Haddad (Tony Shalhoub), intervene at the hijacking of a bus fully loaded with passengers, which contains an explosive device. The bomb turns out to be a paint bomb and the terrorists escape. The FBI receives demands to release Sheikh Ahmed bin Talal, a suspect in an earlier bombing. Hubbard eventually comes into conflict with Central Intelligence Agency agent Elise Kraft (Annette Bening), as he takes a terrorist suspect into custody and arrests Kraft. Later, another terrorist threat is made and a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus is bombed. FBI captures a man named Samir Nazhde (Sami Bouajila), who admits to signing the visa application of one of the suicide bombers in the course of signing many applications for student visas in his job as a lecturer. However, Kraft insists that Samir is not a terrorist and that his continued freedom is vital to the investigation. The terrorist incidents escalate with the bombing of a bus and a crowded theater and hostage-taking at an elementary school, and culminate in the destruction of One Federal Plaza, the location of the FBI's New York City field office, with over 600 casualties. In spite of objections, the President of the United States declares martial law and the United States Army's 101st Airborne Division, under Major General William Devereaux (Bruce Willis), occupies and seals off Brooklyn in an effort to find the remaining terrorist cells... The film received mixed reviews from critics. Rotten Tomatoes states: "An exciting, well-paced action film." Roger Ebert gave the film 2 1⁄2 stars out of four, writing that director Edward Zwick does a good job with crowd scenes, but criticizing it as clumsy. Bruce Willis won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actor for his performances in this film, Armageddon, and Mercury Rising. A starstudded cast with a storyline pre 9/11 that truly makes you think about 9/11. There are some excitement, but "The Siege" suffers from being a patrotic flagwaving political mumble and a silly ending. Plus Bruce Willis is not on top as Major General William Devereaux. Trivia: In a September 2007 interview, screenwriter Lawrence Wright attributed the film's failure at the box office to Muslim and Arab protests at theaters playing the film, but also claimed that it was the most rented movie in America after the September 11 attacks.

This suspense thriller comes off much differently than I remember, watching over twenty years after the release. What was most notable on this rewatch was the prevalence of Islamophobia and justification for torture being exhibited by Americans, despite the release date taking place three years before September 11th.

Certainly no 'The Report', but a fairly decent attempt to get closer to how these things actually work. 3.25/5

Loved this when it first came out, and still enjoy to day.

Surprisingly little impact given the cast.

Fantastic film. Alot to be learned and remembered. A time before Political correctness demictsted policy. A time when common sense dictates response and safety of Americans was first before anything else. Fantastic story and acting is top notch. Excellent writing and a deep, very important message.

Not even the star power of Washington and Bening can save this convoluted clumsy put together plot. It could have been great but the film unfortunately go's down the rabbit hole of ridiculousness.
