A no bad dark crime movie

It's worth watching. Not spectacular, but fun. I like the early 90"s vibe.

Typical 90s action. Not the best Mel Gibson vehicle but it is entertaining and worth a watch.

Sep 22, 2024

Mel wants his cut of the money and he isn't gonna let a couple of bullets slow him down. It's 90s fodder - nothing special.

the role really suits him

This idea of the film shooting technique director made the film more attractive to people.

Payback, has some of the best characters, an original storyline, and memorable scenes that you'll be recalling for years after watching it.

An ugly and meandering revenge thriller. That isn't totally a bad thing but the movie has no consistency, especially with the weirdly happy ending.

Apr 23, 2024

Fast moving and watchable story-wise, but in spite of the opening screen blurb about "principle," this is a movie without morals. The hyper violence and the endless procession of senseless deaths---presented facetiously as if we're supposed to be chuckling--really gets old.

Classic revenge movie. Plot is clever, droll, and has the right amount of action. We'll acted and directed

A simple plot with great characters leads to one of the better revenge comedy films of the past decades.

This is a great under the radar movie. Mel Gibson does a terrific job as the guy you love to hate. I've watched this movie several times, and I never get bored of it. I liked how they added Mel in the background with the narration of the story.

Payback is a classic. Gibson at his best with an excellent cast. William Devane and James Coburn? 'Nuff said!

This is a bit of a hidden gem if you love Mel Gibson's acting. It is an amazing rendition of the lone man seeks vengeance against those who have done him wrong.

If Point Blank had never been made, I would be giving this an extra star. It was, so I wont be, the former being superior in every way an original can be, but that does not mean Payback isn't a fun remake, which it is, as long as you like people who kinda deserve getting their just desserts in varying gruesome ways, which I do. Mel Gibson is a relatively obscure hood, Porter, who is double crossed after a caper, by his slimy partner, portrayed by a well cast Gregg Henry, and Porter's wife, They leave Porter shot and left for dead, but somehow he manages to get to a house where an alcoholic medic extracts the bullets from his back and patches him up. Months later, well enough to exact revenge, he embarks on his odyssey, basically taking on an entire mob outfit while hunting down the 65,000 owed to him. The mob thinks its 130,000 and this minor confusion is played to some amusement as the plot moves along. From the outset, I accepted the premise that Porter is not only smarter than everyone he encounters, he is also the toughest person who ever lived, save for the various and sundry Neanderthals previously inhabiting the planet and the movie became basically one long joyride of him setting up and eliminating everyone remotely associated with his stolen money, abetted by everyone else's greed and stupidity. There is also a subplot involving Lucy Liu and an Asian gang who the money was originally stolen from that is mostly played for comic relief. It could have been totally deleted from the movie, but its a fun aside. In the original, Lee Marvin's Porter is mostly cerebral in his quest for retribution and his cat and mouse game he plays with superior numbers is a joy to behold and there is true irony since, in the end, he never does recover the money he legitimately stole. John Boorman's 1968 original is an example of a truly stylish NOIR, the first Neo Noir I suppose, with Johnny Cool being the last of the older guard. Mel's remake is more of a B movie crowd pleaser, complete with as happy an ending as there could be for a career criminal.

I can, and have, watched this over and over. It slipped under the radar when first released, and I've no idea why. Best of all - it's got Lucy Lieu………hubba hubba

This film is good. It reminds me of early 2000 videogames such as Max Payne or GTA 3. It's dark and gritty and the color scheme is all grey which matches the tone of the film. The only stand-out acting in this is Mel Gibson who plays the "nothing to lose", tough guy convincingly well, everyone else gives passable to decent performances. The plot is pretty basic and predictable but overall it's an entertaining action film and if you're into these kind of crime-action films then you should find this enjoyable.
