Tumbleweeds Reviews
People can be like tumbleweeds; they don’t stay in one place for too long and just keep rolling from place to place Gavin O’ Connor directs Janet McTeer and Kimberly J. Brown in her first starring role It’s the story of a mother and daughter surviving together and each other Mary Jo Walker is a mother with her daughter Ava She’s unfortunately stuck in a viscous cycle where everytime she encounters bad men in a relationship she just bolts They both pack up and move to another city but Ava is getting tired of it Trucker Jack helps them get out of a rough patch on their latest stint But as time goes by Jack becomes more controlling and emotionally aggressive Will Ava run as always with her mom or stay put? McTeer is awesome playing a mother struggling to keep it together with pain, insecurity, and weariness while Brown perfectly exudes a typical teenager wanting to plant her feet somewhere for a change There’s always a crazy reason to run away from our problems but they’re never solved that way The acting is really good in this I definitely appreciated a lot of the lore quieter moments allowing the emotions of these people to be absorbed looking at the crossroads of self realization Both actresses avoid the stereotypes these kinds of stories are known for giving real authenticity
I didn't enjoy the characters or surprisingly even the performances.
Oscar nominee British thespian Janet McTeer spellbindingly portrays a puerile Southern mother coming of age towing along her precocious daughter between abusive relationships with men in this hearteningly heartfelt chick flick.
Delightful! Almost the same story as Anywhere But Here, but this is a ar superior movie. Janet McTeer was great - deserving of Best Actress, although not likely to get it. You'd never guess she's a Brit. Her N. Carolina accent might not have been perfect, but it had no traces of British. Her daughter seemed like a real kid rather than a movie star and their relationship was wonderful to watch unfold.
Janet McTeer is excellent in this and earned her Oscar nomination showing lots of great range of drama and comedy. Kimberly J. Brown, who I have always loved from the Halloweentown movies, is also really great. I wish she did more work these days because she was truly a shining star in this movie.
Although compared to Thelma & Louise in some write ups, Tumbleweeds ends up falling significantly short of that mark. Although McTeer's brief appearance as a "star" is memorable, it is a film that sticks in your mind momentarily and forgotten quickly.
Really sweet movie, about a young girl and her relationship with her mother who goes in and out of relationships. The daughter helps her mother find happieness.
Feel good chick flick. Great for mothers, daughters, or well, anyone, really. If you ever want to feel empowered or loved, throw tumbleweeds in, asap.
It's taken me more than a decade, but I finally saw all the Best Actress nominees from 1999. The movie isn't too bad, the typical mother daughter relationship film about the mom trying to find love and the daughter tagging along for the ride. Janet McTeer is indeed excellent in it (I can't believe she's actually British) and the daughter wasn't too bad. I could have done without the entire truck driver relationship (played by the director) but I guess without it there wouldn't be much of a film. Jay O Sanders was excellent as well, I wish he was in it more, his scene in the RV was great. It's got a lot of cliches, but overall it's a nice little movie.
Outstanding performance by Janet Mc Teer. She deserved her Oscar nomination. Very well written, caringly directed by Gavin O'Connor. A truly great film. Good performances all around. It's the kind of movie that stays with you after watching it. Tumbleweeds is one of those wonderful, deeply personal pictures that pop up every now and then to lift your spirits. nice one.

dramatic comedy starring Janet McTeer, Kimberly J. Brown, Jay O. Sanders, Lois Smith and Gavin O'Connor. written by Gavin O'Connor and Angela Shelton directed by Gavin O'Connor. always in search of love and happiness, Mary Jo Walker (McTeer) has the habit of hooking up with less than perfect men and dragging her young daughter (Brown) across country when things go bad. the mother-daughter duo find themselves in San Diego, California and soon Mary Jo is hooking up with a man (O'Connor) she met while on the road. eventually, things start to go south and the always restless Mary Jo tries to once again run. however, when her daughter, Ava, refuses to leave their latest home and the normalcy she has long desired, Mary Jo is forced to face herself and finally realize that she already has all of the happiness and love she needs. I am a sucker for mother-daughter stories and this one was no different. made me laugh. made me cry. I loved it. well written tale of finding yourself and being happy in the life you have. good stuff.
i loved this movie too! i thought the mom was really kool and i new that one jack dude was fake.... oh well the end is good!!
I've discovered I really love movies about average people and their lives. This is a cute representation of a mother and daughter who have never really found their place so they continue to pack up and move out. It's a good story.
