Behind Enemy Lines Reviews

Feb 2, 2025

Behind Enemy Lines is one of those movies that doesn't try to be anything more than what it is, a straightforward action thriller with high-stakes chases and explosions. The plot is predictable, filled with familiar tropes and moments that feel like they were borrowed from other war films and stitched together. It doesn’t have much depth or originality, but it still manages to be entertaining. The directing leans heavily on fast cuts and a hyperactive camera style, which can feel excessive at times, but it keeps the pacing tight. The cinematography does a decent job of capturing the tension, with some impressive aerial shots and a gritty, cold war-zone atmosphere. What carries the film is the acting. Owen Wilson, stepping away from his usual comedic roles, delivers a solid performance as the lead, and Gene Hackman brings the expected level of authority and gravitas. The script is functional but nothing special, just enough to push the action forward without adding much depth to the characters. The score complements the tension well but isn’t particularly memorable. Despite all its flaws, I still found myself enjoying it. Maybe it's the mix of solid performances and non-stop action, or maybe it's just one of those movies that works as a guilty pleasure.

Not horrible for what it is. 3 stars

This has been one of my favorites for years. Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson make this movie. Good plot that is clever and intense. The special effects are dated, but the rest of it will keep you watching. Owen Wilson shines and Gene Hackman is wonderful, as always. Worth your time!

The film inexplicably falls on Owen Wilson to carry. My own disbelief Wilson could do it was only outweighed by my incredulity in the poor judgment to put him in that position.

Critics are worthless. This is a very enjoyable movie with great effects. Great aerial scenes, compelling plot showing how messy it is in war zones on all sides. Loved it as a kid and love it now. Owen Wilson nails it, gene hackman nails it. It’s great and enjoyable.

Man this move is one of Owen's Wilson best. I only trust the reviews from the audience, the so called professionals have no soul. Lol

I enjoyed it even though I didn't think Owen Wilson was quite right for this part. It's worth the watch.

I really don't understand the poor reviews? I guess if you review movies for a living you forget what's enjoyable entertainment? This movie doesn't fail in any way. I watch it all the time and love it every time. Oh, and since I don't own it, I watch it because it's being broadcast by a pay tv provider like HBO, so I assume the ratings are pretty good too.

Not Owen Wilson's fault but just a poorly directed movie. The music choice was so odd too.

Watching Behind Enemy Lines brought back some memories of the early 2000s. And it's pretty obvious that this movie was made in the early 2000s. For instance, there is a very distinct editing style of that time. It's very choppy and flashy in certain parts. Owen Wilson is an unconventional choice as the lead of an action film, however I think he pulls it off. He also lends an appropriate amount of humor to the role. And Gene Hackman anchors the story and gives the movie some gravitas. It can get a little cheesy at times, but Behind Enemy Lines an entertaining action flick if you're looking for one.

This was a great movie. I don't understand the low ratings. Sure it was less gruesome than a lot of movies, but I find that makes a better movie when you don't need so much foul language and R scenes. Lots of action, good acting, and great storyline.

This is one of my favorite movies and while it might come across as cheesy in some parts considering when it was made and the fil work and special effects make it a very fun movie to watch.

Imagine, some Saturday afternoon roughly 20ish years ago, I had just finished up watching a movie on a "free HBO weekend" (those were a thing) and with nothing else better to watch I started what would become one of my favorite military movies of all-time, Behind Enemy Lines. I nearly turned it off at first because it starred Owen Wilson, an actor who was in a string of annoying comedy films that I refused to watch, but I decided to give it a chance and... I'm so glad I did. While Owen Wilson jokes around on a couple of occasions, this is far from a comedy. While the setup is simple, a fighter pilot and his navigator (Wilson) go on a routine reconnaissance mission when they're shot down and crash behind enemy lines, it's what follows that makes the movie great. Gene Hackman is a commanding presence as always, and Wilson is witty and actually kinda likeable as an action star. While it's far from an Oscar award winning movie, it's still a fun popcorn flick.

Definitely a little dated. There's some weird and distracting camera work, as well as some stilted dialogue, but still a good movie. Owen Wilson is an odd choice for leading man in an action flick.

It's a fun movie, it's not cathartic, so many are going to poo-poo on this movie. But owen Wilson does a good job. And it's a decent film. Yes the blue tint is annoying. But if you can get over it, the story is good, and the action, and cat and mouse story makes the movie enjoyable.

I like the cast, but the music and some of the dialogue is just plain awful.

What could have been a good war drama with realistic action scenes is made in to a more or less banal plot with very stereotypical conflict settings and exaggerated characters, a chase hunt and US military propaganda mishmash, trying to materialize as the Balkan War version of Saving Private Ryan. However, this is not WW2, and a basically mistaken American cast doesn't make it any better.
