Wes Craven Presents: They Reviews

Mar 6, 2025

Boring and rubbish. This movie was not scary at all.

Nope. This movie doesn't have any direct connection to Wes Craven. He doesn't have credit as a writer, director, producer, or even "based upon a story by" attribute. But the marketing team slapped his name all over it. There is nothing new brought to the table with this film. It feels like a re-tread of tropes and plot points we have seen before. It was a hair above terrible and a whisper below mediocrity.

You have probably seen the plot summary a hundred times before, and if you haven't, then you have seen scenes from this film in other films a hundred times before. Julia (Laura Regan) is a master's degree student in psychology. A troubled childhood friend, Billy (Jon Abrahams), contacts her, meets her, rambles incoherently to her, and then shoots himself in front of her. The viewer has already seen Billy, as a young boy, grabbed by monsters in the night, so he probably had some problems even Julia could not help him with. At Billy's funeral, Julia meets Billy's other friends Sam (Ethan Embry) and Terry (Dagmara Dominczyk). The friends have had night terrors as children, and they now bear strange markings on their bodies that seem to say "hey, mysterious computer generated creatures, come and get me!" Julia goes to former childhood psychiatrist Dr. Booth (Jay Brazeau), who does the shrink thing. Julia's boyfriend Paul (Marc Blucas) doesn't really get it all, either. Come to think of it, neither did I. The basic flaw with "They" is the lousy execution of the premise. Childhood monsters coming back for adult victims is a good idea, but the script was given the go-ahead without any explanation as to where the creatures come from, why they mark certain victims, etc. This is huge in a film that is otherwise not very compelling. The cast is fine, acting scared at just the right moment. The instrumental score is terrible, it sounds like incidental music for "The Music Man." Director Harmon's talents are wasted on the screenplay. He needs a script that will not fail his eye. The screenplay borrows from tons of other films like "Jacob's Ladder," "Phantasm," the remake of "The Blob," and "The Sixth Sense," to name a few, and thinks nothing of ripping off the pool scene from "Cat People." Sure, the DVD has the alternate ending, which is a ripoff of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari," but that ending was better than the one that made the final cut. The special effect monsters are wisely kept out of view through most of the film, they look like giant bats. They do deliver a few scares, but in context with the mindless script, it is not enough. Eventually, you will figure out that most of the special effects here consist of some grip flicking lights on and off. "They" had a promising director, nice cast, and a low budget. The script is what never should have seen the light of day.

Silly, Embarrassing and just not scary, They has some scary scenes but not all great.

Never did see the big deal about Wes Craven. Without Freddy and the self parody vehicle Scream, he usually fell in between cheesy and boring. Kudos to They for at least having a creative ending.

muy floja, los bichos de la oscuridad nada que ver y el final menos.

weird and boring movie

I just realized that when I watched They, it has the same premise as Darkness Falls, which I despised anyway. While this is a better movie than Darkness Falls, it's a very mediocre movie that could've been better. The acting is all right, but there are moments where there were dull acting in it. The scares are not effective except for one scene almost at the end which was effective, out of nowhere which I was done with, and really sad that it took the movie that long to finally get me with a scare. The characters are forgettable, but I'm glad that they weren't mean-spirited like the characters from Darkness Falls. The creatures look a bit creepy, but they were a bit too CGI for me to believe that it was there. The plot was eh, but it did leave some questions that weren't answered. The script's not the worst I've seen, which actually, it's better than Darkness Falls, but it's not that great either and has some silly lines in there. It has some good thrills in there, and it does have a better use of light for the creatures than Darkness Falls, even if it felt convenient at times. With an ending that was not good, it made They more of a disappointment that is just forgettable at best.

Mediocre. The film fails to mention why "they" went away in the first place and what triggered their reappearance. Plus, the main character Julia's scream gets quite obnoxious halfway through.

Virtually nothing of consequence really happens in this film. It's not easy making a film where nothing happens, but apparently the makers of They discovered the secret.

Just like Wes Craven's Cursed, this movie doesn't know how to use it's FX/scares to make a coherent or scary movie, resulting in a film . 'They' isn't a horrible movie, but it's a little under the paranormal movie average. 44/100

This movie was really great until rather than ending, it just kind of stopped... Did yall see something shiny and forget to make the rest of your movie or what?

Pretty good movie. The film's premise is fairly interesting, the film itself probably should've been a little creepier, but it was still intriguing and somewhat creepy, with a good performance from Regan.

Excellent, probably the most frightening movie i know, despite its glaring shortcomings

An OK fear-the-dark premise that goes absolutely nowhere. If you watch the DVD, stop 3 minutes before it's over and view the alternate ending -- that's the one they should have gone with. And it's definitely the only one that makes some kind of sense.

The ending of this movie still haunts me to this very day. Very scary.

i don't really think it's a bad movie; but i do think they are bad actors.
