The Company Reviews
This is Altman at his easiest, his most unruffled, and complete.

Excellent look at what goes into creating ballet.

The venerable Altman's distinctive eye remains undimmed.
| Original Score: 3/5 | May 14, 2004
Meanders aimlessly until eventually falling flat on its face.
| Original Score: 2/5 | May 11, 2004
Altman ... whose intuition for placing the camera in just the right spot has always been impressive. In the dance scenes, it's flawless.

Instead, it is the collective nature of the artistic medium that is the focus, Altman introducing an almost stream of conscience-like narrative that's mesmerizing and distant all at the same time.
| Original Score: 3/4 | Mar 4, 2004
Altman thrusts upon the audience the responsibility of connecting the dots. But the dots don't connect, and instead of the resolution that generally follows tension, there is a feeling of having missed something.

It neither adores nor disapproves of its players, which leaves the moviegoer a little clueless, and unmoved.

The measured pace of The Company could tax the patience of some, but the dancing is so well executed, and so energetic, that only the most dance-averse members of the audience would likely object.
| Original Score: 3/5 | Jan 30, 2004
A love letter to performers who put their egos and bodies on the line.

It's a joy to watch these colorful characters, and their exacting, physically demanding dances, from a leisured distance.

In straining to mix the real story of ballet's demands with a romance, The Company fails to capture our imaginations.

This is an absolutely miraculous movie.

Altman is a master at blending ensemble casts ... but there's little he can do with these nondescript characters, who quickly blend into a faceless morass.

A loving tribute to artists, and to art.
| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 16, 2004
Lacks what could kindly be called coherence.
| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 16, 2004
The dances are beautiful, and the way the dancers live and interact have the ring of truth.

Feels like a documentary that's missing the surprises of real life.
| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jan 16, 2004
Even though the Joffrey, founded nearly 50 years ago, has powerful work in its repertory, the film emphasizes dance that is pretty and a touch vapid.
