Rent Reviews

Amazing musical. Jonathan Larsons legacy was cemented in our hearts when rent hit Broadway ( and the day he died), this musical brought the Broadway musical back from the dead for my generation, and this movie made it available for anyone to experience.

Senseless and rebarbative depravity.

every song sounded the same...too wordy and monotonous...by the third song i was throwing up in my mouth a little...couldn't finish, couldn't turn it off fast enough, wish i hadn't started...total yock-poo

i love this musical ,incredible

At their peak, the performances—and the song lyrics, bold and unflinching—more than compensate for the weaker choices in this big-screen adaptation.

I honestly really enjoyed the movie and everything around it, the music too... there is not one song I dislike in this MOVIE. I also love how they kept most of the original cast from the Broadway Musical. This is truly something I can watch over and over without getting tired of it!

I hate that critics have slammed this film. I think it was a wonderful adaptation of an off-Broadway play that needed to be brought to the big screen. Chris Columbus brings usual amount of heart to this film. Appropriate given its source material. Rent will leave you gutted, but also full of warmth and love….SEASONS of love! I, cannot, in anyway, imagine why critics see differently. This is a perfect adaptation of a play brought to the silver screen. Bravo! 👏

Rent owes me for the time I wasted watching it. I did enjoy some of the music, I think Jonathan Larson was a talented songwriter, but this movie is pretty awful. Some of the characters are annoying, others I couldn't stand, and the rest are overacting. Rent is also a very manipulative movie. It's like it's constantly yelling at you, telling you how cool it is and explaining why you should be crying. I've never seen the musical, so perhaps it plays better on stage, but this adaptation didn't make me want to rush out and buy a ticket. Rent is just so full of itself that it can't see how obnoxious it is.

Too much queer trauma

i know there are a lot of movie critics that rated this one poorly, and i can understand why but if you're simply watching the movie to watch it it's a great pick. it gives insight into poverty and the AIDS crisis in the 80s and can be very relatable to many artists. i believe it's a wonderful film and my favorite musical

I would call myself the target audience for this movie. I'm queer and I love musicals. That being said, the first time I saw this movie I thought it was cringey and ridiculous. After a few watches though I grew to love the music and I decided to just take it for what it is and its become one of my favorite movies despite its flaws. Even my cynical husband was crying by the end.

If there was ever a movie that deserves the worst made ever...Rent is it! Nothing in the movie makes sense. The only positive was watching Rodario Dawson.

This movie is awesome, the characters are lovely and the plot of the story really creates a whole in your heart.

Wonderful music, a sad story, the movie itself lacks the magic, but I'm glad I've seen it.

Aimless, self-elevated drama about a bunch of kids who think they can teach the world a thing or two when they really have no idea how it works. Complete waste of time.

I enjoy musicals of most types, but rent was a flop as entertainment. It spent all its time and ammunition being timely and hip. So of course it was stale by the time I saw it. I was never so happy as when the pain of watching this self absorbed play ended.

I first saw this movie about 15 years ago. Back then I didn't really get it nor was in that into musicals. But rewatching it now, I enjoyed it more than I expected.
