Casanova Reviews

Feb 15, 2025

Casanova takes many, many liberties with the history of the titular character. It is entertaining enough through the first 80 minutes that those inaccuracies and even the questionable decision making by Oliver Platt's character - plots shouldn't hinge on people making decisions that are at odds with what little we know about them - can be forgiven. The final 20 minutes see the movie go completely off the rails. The first 80% is worth watching as it features Heath Ledger, some fun dialogue, and has Venice as a backdrop. Rather than rent it, you can find it on Youtube for free.

A love story that's not all true this is a Charming movie that had me grinning from beginning to end.

It feels like the creators were afraid to jump in any specific direction, which created a jumbled mess. This movie wasn't all bad, but the movie felt more like bits and pieces of other movies rather than actually being a movie itself.

Take me back to good times

Interesting and entertaining movie that focused on the people more than the exploits.

1/8/18 This movie is really pretty silly. It has a few funny parts, but it's nothing earth shattering. I liked that it had a different setting... being set in Venice probably in the 1800s. The fact that people can't identify him by his face is preposterous, but whatever. Silly, and pretty brainless comedy.

Even though this is not my type of film I enjoyed in this quite a artistic way with all the fruity costumes, settings and disguises that take place

The film wasn't that bad, it was boring in some scenes, apart from that the film isn't that bad if you're boring

While I'm not as much of a history buff as I probably should be to say whether or not this movie does service to the real Casanova, I will say that as a movie, it's a really cute chick flick. I'm a sucker for period films, and this movie is gorgeous to look at. Lasse Hallstrom put a lot of passion and heart into this film. He filmed the movie entirely in Venice and put a lot of effort into the sets and costumes. The story has a few flaws here and there (again, not taking historical accuracy into account at all, just looking at it as a stand alone movie), but overall, it has a happy ending and if you just want to watch a romantic historical fiction, and see Heath Ledger being his sexy, suave self, this one is a good pick!

It's a shame Ledger died so young. I'm sure he would've produce great movies as he got older.

Directed by Lasse Hallström, (What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), The Cider House Rules (1999), Chocolat (2000) and Salmon Fishing In The Yemen (2011)), this romantic comedy was based on the adventures and exploits of Giacomo Casanova (1725 - 1798), whose complicated and elaborate affairs earned him a legendary reputation as a serial womaniser. The film is patchy, but it has some funny moments. In 18th Century Venice, Giacomo Casanova (Heath Ledger) has been romancing a number of women across Venice, from aristocrats to nuns, and he's been arrested by Dalfonso (Ken Stott), but The Doge of Venice (Tim McInnerny) always manages to get him off the hook. But, Casanova finds himself falling in love with Francesca (Sienna Miller), who writes feminist books, but Francesca's mother Andrea Bruni (Lena Olin) wants her to marry the rich Paprizzio (Oliver Platt). Plus, Casanova's days womanising all over Rome are numbered when Pucci (Jeremy Irons) from the Venetian Inquisition, who wants to arrest Casanova for sexual debauchery. It's a very silly film, but it has a good who's who of actors in it, and Ledger gives a very game performance, and it shows he was a very gifted actor who died too young. Not all of it works, but it has some lovely visuals and it has the tone and structure of an old Ealing comedy too, although this has more sexual references and swearing.

I've never known the real story of Casanova so I won't judge. This movie is a total fresh comedy! Love the set and the pictures, it's been awhile since the last time I watched British classic romance :)
