Dorian Gray Reviews

Not read the book but it's on my TBR pile, I can't imagine this being even close to the book.

This dark fantasy horror film based on Oscar Wilde's 1890 novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, tells the story of an attractive Englishman whose loveliness and spirit are captured in an enchanted painting that keeps him from aging. His portrait becomes further tainted with every sin he commits while he remains young and handsome. Though the gripping story is supported by strong performances from the rest of the cast, it is clear that this role was not a good fit for Ben Barnes. The film suffers from poor pacing and a lack of cohesion, with an ending that feels abrupt and rushed. Additionally, the adaptation strays significantly from the original novel, with many changes that do not serve the story well. However, the costumes are stunning—unfortunately, they are a highlight in a film that could have been far better executed.

Horrible adaptation. They change everything in the book. The most important parts were changed so the meaning of the actions change as well. I do not recommen to watch this movie.

Not the greatest adaptation and definitely not the most insulting. At least they get the character of Dorian Grey correct .....the third act felt a bit rushed though sad to say.

It's just my favourite movie. I love the visuals, the clothes, the acting, the dialogues. It is a bit different from the book but it isn't worse! It is really good and i will recommend it to everyone ❤️

Very close to the Book… and an overall fine Production. Scince there are so many Versions out there, it might (!) get the Audience in a State of „Boredom" like: „Oh NO… not ANOTHER one!" BUT…; IF you get involved and FOLLOW the story with your eyes open, you WILL love this adaptation of the classic. After all, there's never a dull moment because good camera work, production design and good acting... keep your attention! A bit "OFF Topic: I found myself wishing that Mister KUBRIK had ever tackled this material! WHAT kind of "painting" would THAT have been…?!?!? Finally, for me it‘s a well earned 3,5 solid (!) Stars!

This movie was released in 2009 but I did not care to watch it cause of these reviews. Just started reading the book and watched this movie and I was in awe. Ben Barnes carries Dorian so well. He shows empathy in the beginning and there is a transition due to the external influence. This goes to show how damaging reviews are to films.

This is a spooky/chilling Victorian era horror/fantasy/thriller film. Its certainly watchable and Colin Firth gives a decent performance but I did feel it relied on a few too many cliches - it tries perhaps a bit too hard to be taken seriously as a full blown horror film, with a bit of a Tim Burton feel to it, only I felt it was a too over the top or 'in your face'. Having said that, the plot was interesting and the characters intriguing, it just seemed to me like it was trying a bit too hard to scare the viewer. Its chilling and it does contain quite a bit of bloody violence and the like but it didn't personally make me jump. This is an interesting film but its not quite what I'd regard as a good film as such - its nearly that but not quite. Still, there are worse films around I guess and overall, no, I wouldn't outright recommend it, especially if your not keen on depictions of hedonistic activities in victorian London(!).

Even if the movie does not follow the path of the novel, it is still a dreadful and boring story

It was decent but I wouldn't recommend

It was just so cheap-looking. And I remember reading this story several years ago; it deserved way more depth than what I saw here. I'm not sure what I would have done differently, but I just feel like it was missing dimension here.

Admittedly, this is a British Film and there may be some stylistic differences from Hollywood productions that I'm not accounting for but this is a rough watch. Many liberties are taken in the adaptation from the novel including invention of a new character. Much of the acting feel wooden and emotionless and Colin Firth seems to be doing an impression of James the out-of-work actor employed at the Max in Saved by the Bell. Ben Chaplin and Rebecca Hall do turn in good performances. Overall, the production value, staging, and dialogue felt like it belongs in a High School stage play or 온라인카지노추천 movie.

Ben Barnes' face is the only highlight. Oh and the random gay kiss

The film The Picture of Dorian Gray is based on the book by Oscar Wilde. The film was directed by Oliver Parker. It stars Ben Barnes as Dorian Gray, Colin Firth as his friend seducer Lord Henry Wotton and Ben Chaplin as artist who painted the picture of Dorian Gray Basil Hallward. The film is set in London in the summer of 2008 and premiered on 9 th of September 2009 in the United Kingdom. The film is about the innocent, young and insanely handsome man Dorian Gray. He arrives in London where he inherited his grandfather's house. Young Dorian is naive, inexperienced, unassuming in social life. In three weeks he only met Lady Ahatha's charity group and artist Basil Halward. Everything changes after the young man meets Lord Henry, who leeds rampant lifestyle. Lord Henry Wotton convinced the young man that the secret of Dorian's success and happiness is his beauty and it will help him to enjoy all the pleasures of the world. The talanted artist Basil Holloward paints a portrait of the young man, wishing to permanently capture his purity and beautiful appearance. Looking at the picture the guy wants to stay as he is in the picture forever, never grow old and never lose his beauty. At that moment, he made a deal with the devil. After that, all the sins of his life full of debauchery and criminal passions begin to show ugly strokes on his picture and his own face remains forever young and beautiful. When Basil asks for his portrait back for a exhibition, the young manrefuses him and they quarrel. As a result, Dorian kills an artist. Trying to get away with what he's done, Dorian leaves London to travel. My favourite scene is when Dorian returns after 25 years, still as young as he is and meets Henry's daughter, Emily, and they have feelings. In the end, at one of the parties Dorian's secret is revealed. Lord Henry finds the picture and sees the deformed face of a once-beautiful man on it. He throws a kerosene lamp into the portrait, and then locks Dorian with a burning canvas in the attic. The boy burns alive. I strongly recommend The Picture of Dorian Gray, because it has interesting plot, the film is shrouded in mystery and secrecy, it's also instructive because it shows a visualization of good and evil. I also like the acting, Ben Barnes played the character of Dorian Gray perfectly.

As a excited fan of Oscar Wilde I was deeply dissapointed of this movie . The story line gets unexplainably distorted, the characters reduced and without their defining traits and a lot of useless sex scenes were added. The main actor did a poor job and Dorian Gray in the manuscript was much more interesting and versatile. Lord Henry was not as villanous and Sybil Vane has a different background and importante.Missed some of the psychological and thought-provoking elements present in the book's characters. In synthesis, for the lovers of the book as myself, don't watch this film . It's a disgrace for Wilde and for his marvelous book.

A good representation of the source materials who doesn't take too many risks, but risks nevertheless of being trivial and repetitive.
