Dark Streets Reviews

When the music works far better than any other aspect of your movie you are in trouble.

Strange movie with a dumb plot. Music is good.

Great performances, great jazz history, great dirty politicians. I really enjoyed this one.

Okay, the only reason it gets one star is because the performances are good. They'd be even better if they had a good script to work off of. It starts off slow and never picks up. For a moment in the middle of the film, it sounds like it's about to get interesting then...nothing. The songs are also good, but it's not enough to make a movie out of it. Too blah

Way much better than I thought. Particularly good at photography (together with the beautiful sets & props), the musical numbers, with the successful building-up of the moody 1930s environment. The story & narrative are still the weakest links however. A wonderfully-acted Bijou Phillips once again.

Dark streets is a noir musical where the plot goes like this:Chaz(Gabriel Mann)a young nightclub owner in 1930s New York,is trying to unravel the mystery of his wealthy fathers untimely death. He is warned by a man (Elias Koteas)representing some shadowy group, not to proceed, but Chaz is obsessed with finding the truth, and won't let anything get in the way of that. The movie has some stunning dancing and singing routines, that really is the best feature of this movie. The film also try to exude a dark, smoky and ominous athmosphere, and does that not to badly. The actors work well with what little they have to play with, but the movie is primarily style over content. The plot should really have been fleshed out more if it were to be any good.

I got through the first 15 minutes and I commend you if you were able to watch past that...

An oddity. A noir musical, with a good amount of the numbers on the stage of the club, and then a musical in the same vein as American Graffiti. The singing is solid to great all the way around. The narrator's voice is just this side of parody. The choregraphy is top notch. But it's all dressing. It looks and plays great, but thre's no heart. The mystery of who killed Gabriel Mann's father isn't engaging because the audience is always two steps ahead, but his relationships with his newest act (he owns the nightclub) and his former-flame, the real love of his life, is pretty grounded. Still, all the dialogue, the center-focus camera, the dimly lit scenes, seem like an experiment some friends put together. "Hey, ever wanted to make a noir film?" "A bit, but what I really love is all those nightclub singing bits." "Let's see what we can do." Solid, but empty.

Boring, pretentious and with a weak story.

To quote another review: "The film is so obsessed with style and atmosphere, it forgot to add a story and characters with depth." The music and period details were great, the music was fantastic and the singing ad dancing were wonderful, but if you look past the singing, dancing, costumes, sets, and film production, there isn't much else. No real story, no real character development. This film had potential but failed mightily with the exception of being a beautiful film to watch and hear. But that alone doesn't get you a good movie.

Got lost just after the opening credits...but liked the gorgeous photography.

What do you get when you try so hard to make an artistic movie that you end up ruining it before it even gets started? The Dark Streets. I understand what they were trying to do, but it simply did not work. There was too much needless drama, lacking a good story line, and the acting was not at the level that the director was envisioning. This one went bust early in my mind.

Waste of an hour and 10 minutes... would've been better if they flushed out the plot and if they added more music

I absoluetly loved the visual style of this film. It was stunning the cinematography, the costume design, and the production design were some of the best I've ever seen in a film. The director and crew did a wonderful job creating this noirish atmosphere. But unfortunetly the script was weak. The plot was stale and the characters weren't that interesting at all. I thought the characters were interesting the girls and the blakc host with his awesome style. But that's about it the central plot failed to captivate me.
