12:08 East of Bucharest Reviews

Jun 2, 2024

Saw it for it's title alone and it surprised me. Showed me a side of Romania I had never seen and the wry humor and cynicism were at times painful. It did take on some fascinating issues of what a revolution is all about and what makes a revolutionary, but the plot culminated in a bizarre tv show that was a let down. RUS.

An amusing dissection of how people try to contextualize major historical events they witnessed.

Set in the small city of Vaslui, a Romanian television host assembles a panel to discuss the role of the city in the national revolution that drove Nicolae Ceausescu from power in 1989. 12:08 East of Bucharest starts slowly and admittedly drags a bit over the first half, but the actual 온라인카지노추천 broadcast of the ‘debate' is comedy gold. Using primarily stationary cameras, a bland color pallet and grainy film stock, the movie has an appropriately austere look to it, complimented by the deadpan and dry performances from the entire cast. The laughs kick in when it becomes evident that the town may have played no role in the ousting of the dictator as those who recall the events begin to clash over their interpretation of the events of the day. The humor is subtle but undoubtedly effective in its execution.

Winning Cannes Palme d'Or, this Romanian political satire commemorates the 1989 Romanian Revolution and the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu with a wry comedy following a hard-drinking history teacher, a Santa Claus-playing pensioner and an inept television journalist as they converge in a broadcast to discuss the myth of their hometown's involvement in the violent period, with self-deprecatingly slapstick consequences.

Slow but hypnotically interesting. Wonderful details.

Dry humor everywhere, this is a potrayal of small town people trying to put the dots of history in their own town.

A tremendously funny film about recollection but moreso how we often develop stories in order to make us part of larger events or experiences. A true gem.

This is a satire so well done that most of the time you won't even notice how many things ridicules at the same time! Romanian cinema is on a roll, and most of the films are like this one - warmly naturalistic emphasizing character and performance over formal mastery. There is a style but the real virtuosity is more expressed through very witty long conversations, allowed to play out in precisely composed frames. A real treat to enjoy! The director Corneliu Porumboiu won the 2006 Camera d'Or Prize (for best first film) at the Cannes Film Festival for this really seriously funny story set in the city of Vaslui, centering on a group of characters who revisit the Romanian Revolution of 1989 which brought an end to the communist regime. Just imagine 온라인카지노추천 show with a smug 온라인카지노추천 host Ion Sapdaru and the two men who eventually agree to help Sapdaru: drunken, deep-in-debt history teacher Teo Corban, and grumpy old Santa Claus impersonator Mircea Andreescu...These guys made me laugh even when they were dead serious! The full English title refers to the setting of the film and the time of day at which Romanian president Nicolae Ceauşescu fled following the revolution, 12:08 pm on December 22, 1989. The original Romanian title roughly translates to "Was There or Wasn't There?", referring to the film's central issue: did Vaslui have any part in the 1989 revolution? The answer depends on whether the city registered any protest before the moment of Ceauşescu's flight... If you like to question many things and still enjoy a slyly comic tone with lots of self-mockery, I will recommend this work of art!

unconventional, very dry humour, quite enjoyable

I'm depressed that there are no revolutions that I can claim to have started. Does getting a hotmail account in 1995 count as being a starter of the internet revolution? I hope so. That would make me feel better.

Amuzant si extrem de cotidian, un exemplu excelent de umor romanesc.

Funny film, interesting subject and some odd characters. It was worth a watch.

While this is billed as a comedy, I did not find it that funny -- more along the lines of sobering. The tv show host wants to retrace local history by discovering if his home town had a revolution or not -- and he gets conflicting accounts. The movie is slowish, and nothing much appears to happen, but all of it was made up for me in the last five minutes of the movie that turn it into a rather stunning statement about the revolution.

Another Romanian comedy film that isn't particularly funny but is rather brilliant. The humour is so dry with such deadpan delivery of the excellent script that this farce actually feels more like a piece of cinematic realism. Beautifully and cleverly shot.

After a slow start, it builds into one of the most deliciously dark comedies I've seen in a while. LOL.
