Extract Reviews

Apr 24, 2025

Very underrated comedy movie. I can watch this movie over and over again and it still cracks me up to this day.

Don’t understand the 38% from the audience, it was entertaining. Although Extract may not be a classic, it’s still a solid 7/10 comedy film in my opinion.

Such an underrated hilarious and smart movie. Beavis and Butthead fans were no doubt confused by Mike Judge upping the IQ.

Awful people, but at the end it recovers. It makes me laugh but the persons in the story I can’t stand them.

The very pretty Ms Kunis is cast against type as the antagonist, and there are some fairly amusing scenes between Affleck and Bateman. That's where it ends; there's virtually no plot, and criminal under-use of the brilliant Kristen Wiig. Also, 'extract' is just a weird choice for what the factory is manufacturing.

He should've and affair and trashed his wife out the window. Come on every guy would've done that unrealistic.

Mike Judge didn't get the respect he deserved for this underrated gem.

Some were just too hard and too critical on this movie which was entertaining enough and a 5.5 of 10! There were a few big laughs along the way and wow...isn't that Ted from Schitts Creek?!, I said out loud when I first saw him in this! He was very funny pre Schitts Creek! Worth seeing, give it a try! Big cast too!

There's probably a valuable lesson for me to learn here about how clouded my judgment can become because of nostalgia. I watched this in high school when it first came out and remember it fondly, but rewatching it as an adult and then sitting here trying to highlight the parts I liked to justify giving it a bunch of stars I realize it is really not a particularly good movie. I am a huge fan of Bateman, Kunis and Simmons and them essentially character acting in the roles they're typecast in is always great to see, and recognizing the vet from Schitt's Creek (and his whole section of the movie really) was a highlight, but the movie would've been better served by focusing on any one of the numerous plotlines and mining that material for jokes instead of touching the surface of each of them. I think any movie with Jason in it is at least a solid 7 out of 10 but if I were to compare this to the rest of his filmography it wound rank in the 3-4 out of 10 area. That said, there's no accounting for taste, even my own, so it's a 7 for me!

I see a lot of negative reviews about this movie, which makes me scratch my head; because I liked it. I liked the humor, and the acting. I especially liked the (in-factory) scenes. I am not a Ben Affleck fan at all, but this is probably the only movie which I thought he fit the part very well; a laid back drug taking bar owner. (Well, the movie gave the impression that he owned the bar). Joe Adler was hilarious "We can end this right now if you come over here and let me slam your balls in this door". Mila Kunis was okay, but there is something about her which always makes me a bit uncomfortable (I do not know why). Of course I do not go for the "Slutty Lookin" girls. So all-in-all, I guess she fit the part okay. Step, wow, that guy can act. Who would think that Step could possibly be a bad-ass Romulan in the 2009 movie Star Trek? (Same year 2009) –AMAZING! No other person could have played that part better. Jason Bateman is also good. He is a great light romantic comedy type of actor, and up until he stared in Ozark, I thought that was all he was good for, but no, he is capable of stretching his character to fit serious roles as well. There is only one single scene in the movie that I did not like, and that is in the bar, when Joel and Dean were sitting at a table having a Heineken. Neither of them took a drink, the bottles were obviously full the entire scene, but the bottles kept on rotating. The labels facing this, way, then that way, then this way….The bottles should have just stayed the same. To sum up, if you are in the mood for a light comedy, this one fits the bill. Not quite as good as "Office Space", but well worth the time.

I love this movie! I think the premise is original, and it's very, very funny. Jason Bateman, Kriesten Wiig, Mila Kunis, JK Simmons, Ben Afflect, and others who have gone on to be working actors are great.

A fan of Jason Bateman

Warmed over version of 'Office Space' from the view of management. That in itself, with Judge in charge, should have been enough to make this a funny fun watch, but even at 90 minutes, it was a slog. Jason Bateman's character is a bit of a self absorbed ass (drugs aside), and his wife is a dud of a character - and I am assuming here - these are the folks we are supposed to be rooting for. There are a bunch of zany, over the top characters that don't add anything to the plot, which is saying a lot, as not much of anything actually happens in this film. You have to be careful when you make the humor so dry that it isn't funny anymore.

Joel Reynolds (Jason Bateman) is the owner and founder of Reynolds Extract, a flavoring-extracts company. Although his business is successful, his marriage lacks passion. He is also often accosted by his annoying neighbor, Nathan. One day, a series of mishaps occur at the extract factory, resulting in an employee, Step, losing a testicle. Cindy (Mila Kunis), a con artist, reads a news story about the accident. Hatching a get-rich-quick scheme, she gets a temporary job at the factory, manipulating Joel into giving her more information about Step. She also begins a series of petty thefts from her co-workers, who openly accuse each other of the thefts. Although Step initially decides not to sue the company, he changes his mind after a meeting with Cindy, which she sets up in order to meet and flirt with him. Under Cindy's influence, Step hires attorney Joe Adler... Rotten Tomatoes critical consensus reads, "Extract has some very funny moments and several fine performances, but the film feels slighter and more uneven than Mike Judge's previous work." Dan Zak of The Washington Post, called it "the most disappointing American comedy of the decade". On the other end of the spectrum, Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune called it "the funniest American comedy of the summer". "Extract" written and directed by Mike Judge is really nothing special, however we get a solid cast with Jason Bateman in the lead. There´s moments for sure, but the storyline is too simple and not really that exciting to be honest.

I'm a big fan of Jason Bateman. This film was very similar to all his others, but I still enjoyed it. Some very funny parts. Didn't really feel the chemistry between any of the characters, but a nice, funny, entertaining film. An easy watch if you want to pass an hour or two.

Decent but not overly memorable Jason Bateman pot-boiler. Not enough JK Simmons or Kristen Wiig. Too much Ben Affleck. Watch, smile, forget.

I think this is a really funny film with great performances by Jason Bateman, Kristen Wiig and Mila Kunis.

Great moments in an otherwise terrible film. Too many false starts and a lot more depressing than it should have been.

Disappointing Movie. Great cast and director and I just kept waiting for it to get good and it never did.
