"13 Assassins could end up being Miike's masterpiece. It's that good."

It's clear that the exhilarating 50-minute climax battle is both the director's forte and his primary passion.

Rather than being a simple action movie, it is all a bloody samurai film that revives the chambara genre. [Full review in Spanish]

...the film offers far more than cheap thrills and violent spectacle. 13 Assassins brings men to the crux of their beliefs and forces them to live out the reality of their choices in battle.

Takashi Miike has created a reverential and vital film in a genre that many may have thought as moribund and passé as its subject.

You've seen this film before, many times.

It's a reverent throwback to the great 1950s-'60s Japanese samurai films, and it's done in neutral shades of gray and white and tan and black.

As this finale makes clear, Miike is well aware of the conventionality of "13 Assassins" and clearly is comfortable following and continuing its form.

... a superbly executed but straightforward men on a mission film where the increasingly outmoded ideals of duty and honor and meaning through sacrifice are at the heart of the matter.

Mr. Miike has done such a remarkable job with the overall saga and the characters that one can't help but become emotionally invested.

Culminates in a riveting, ingeniously plotted, and inventively shot 45-minute battle scene.

Miike shows us the absurdity of war by showing us the thrill of war.

Invoking the Kurosawa’s name is not entirely the sacrilege it sounds. Miike’s scope here treads in similar epic waters, displaying a respect for tradition and a surprisingly strong development of, and sympathy for, character.

Consegue combinar uma abordagem mais clssica, tradicional, aos toques de violncia bizarra tpicas da filmografia de Miike.
