13 Assassins Reviews
What an incredible movie. This is what good people truly do for the greater good of a nation and world. Maybe we should start doing this stuff again.
Extremely slow burning , you start forgetting what the purpose of the mission is and thus, after a while, you don't care about the protagonists. The characters are not that bad but seriously, you stop caring after 30 minutes of nothing happening.
I was captivated right from the start; it's a heroic tale of revenge. You may despise the lord, but you have to respect his followers—they're loyal and remain true to their samurai path.
A classic masterpiece depicting the end of the samurai era. A story of tyranny brutality loyalty and honor culminating in a well choreographed epic final battle.
One word - Phenomenal.
Wow, one of the best fight scenes I've ever seen. Love everything Miike did for this one – avoided using CGI in favor of practical effects with all 13 actors inexperienced in sword fighting... somehow making it surprisingly realistic.
Too long build-up. Strange dialogs. Good fight.
Took me a little while to get my bearings with this samurai epic but it built up the action and tension nicely and concluded with some of the most sustained and intense fight scenes I've ever seen in a movie. Keen to now check out some of the director's other films.
Well written characters, authentic performances and perfectly violent fighting on nicely crafted sets while everything's captured by some great cinematography. The deleted scenes should have stayed in for more closure on a particular character.
I saw the original & liked it a lot. This version is even better, in fact, amazing. The sadistic scenes were much more gruesome, making the bad guy very evil. Watching 13 fight 200 was a bloody, glorious mess.
one heck of a movie and story driven by the most amount of emotion I ever witnessed on the screen

"Let us include only true, noble samurai in this mission. Men of skill, men of honor, men willing to do the right thing. And also any homeless bums who fling rocks that we happen to find on the way there." Though nominally a remake of a 1963 Japanese film directed by Eiichi Kudo, 13 Assassins is going to draw its most immediate comparisons to Seven Samurai - the recrutiment for a noble cause, the team dynamic, the few against the many, the feaudal Japanese setting, and even the comic relief all echo features of the Kurosawa masterpiece. What it doesn't have nearly as much of is philosophical weight, as Miike abandons many of his more distinctive auteur flourishes in favor of a more grounded action film, but one that delivers entertainment value in spades. Criticized by some viewers for its slow and expositional build-up, the film is an exercise in contrast, dropping hints to character and context before building up to a single grand flourish with a 45-minute fight scene. The action is well-choreographed and wonderfully gritty, contrasting against the almost bureaucratic honor codes of traditional samurai with a series of elaborate traps, bombs, and mud being flung in duels; when blades are actually crossed, the exchanges feel dangerous but not excessive. The final result is a very solid piece of samurai action in the mold of genre classics that doesn't carry thematic heft but makes up for it with entertainment value. Miike still can't figure out CGI. He wanted to avoid it with this particular film, but when it shows up you are very aware of it. Those flaming bulls take you right out of the moment. (3.5/5)
What a beautiful film violent yes but truly poetic definitely a must watch if you love samurai movie
A brutally violent, visceral and blunt-edged tale of vengeance. Soaked in blood & homage to cinema as well as grand storytelling alike, this is a genre exercise that simultaneously alludes to older stories while also doing something of its own. Occasionally over the top, and sometimes too unsettling, (a few select scenes seem to exist only for shock value, and may take away from the actual film), “13 Assassins” is, for the most part, a brilliant, skillful and expert cinematic slice of the jugular. An absolute must for Samurai-cinema fans and Japanese cinema fans alike. Some of the cinematography and action sequences are breathtaking.
Masterpiece. 5 distinct acts of the movie, some drama, history, some insane action, some journey, some reflection, some supernatural. Great film
