8-Bit Christmas Reviews

Jan 3, 2025

I am from the 80’ and watching the movie was a delight. My kids love it but it was not a hit for them as for me. The target audience is really kids from the 80’ who dreamed about that Nintendo.

A super fun and light-hearted Christmas movie that manages to pack a surprising emotional punch at the end. Probably not in "Christmas Classic" territory, but totally worth a watch and probably worth firing up every couple years for another watch.

Wow! I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it's loud and a bit zany at times, but it is a sweet movie and if you were a kid in the 80's, even better. Good stuff!

Fun movie. Mildly humorous.

Went too far on all the absurd situations. Just constantly more bad things happening and his parents treated his sister like a total golden child. Fast forwarded through it eventually just to get to the end. Which almost might have saved it but still not a movie I'd ever recommend or watch again.

I actually enjoyed this film far more than I was expecting to. I wasn't expecting a disaster, by any means, but I was surprised by just how much of a good time I had watching this film. After all, the premise does sound like it promotes consumerism given that it's basically A Christmas Story but replacing a BB Gun with an NES. But I ended up getting a much better film than that with what felt like a throwback to a bygone era of Christmas films. The child actors all do a good job and their characters are all likeable, the movie's quite funny and the climax revealing what the story Neil Patrick Harris was telling to his daughter was actually about elevated this story from a charming Christmas Story clone to a genuine classic on its own merits. If I had a few criticisms, it would be how the quest for Nintendo gets downright ridiculous with the number of hope spots and some of the adult depictions can be downright cartoonish (forgot what Steve Zahn looked like, so when I saw his name in the credits, it had me thinking "so that's why he reminded me so much of the dad from the Diary of a Wimpy Kid movies") but the blow is softened a bit by the fact that NPH is established to be an unreliable narrator and thus, some artistic embellishments are to be expected. All in all, a charming, underrated Christmas classic that lovingly homages the '80s without gunning for the Stranger Things crowd as if they were embarrassed to make something family-oriented. Highly recommended!

First, take out the film "A Christmas Story." Replace a Red Ryder BB Gun with a Nintendo, a relatable family with caricatures, a believable time period setting with a poor facsimile, witty narration with boring narration, and you get "8-Bit Christmas." This movie is mid at best. It wins a few points in its final act, but the acting and the writing is cringe inducing. Most of these kids cannot deliver believable lines. The jokes just are not that funny. My wife and I chuckled a few times at best. The film does have a good message, but I don't think the message is good enough to get us to watch the movie again. Oh and the "Power Glove" came out in 1989 and did not work or function as it was featured in this movie.

A definite must watch for anyone who played video games in the mid 80's. A very relatable Christmas movie for those of us who were there. A worth-while stroll down memory lane.

I liked this movie. I love the characters and their attempts to get the best video game console in the 80s. The ending has a nice little twist as well, which puts things into perspective. It’s on my watch list for every Christmas!

It is very nice of Hollywood to make a movie specifically for me. Safe to say that I am an easy mark for a movie like this. I love me some Nintendo. Not to nerd flex, but I have beaten all 3 Ninja Gaidens, Punch Out!!, Contra and Double Dragon. I also love me some Christmas. I am a sucker for the Christmas Cheese and sentimentality that comes with these kinds of holiday movies. An 8- Bit Christmas clearly takes inspiration from 80's classics like "A Christmas Story" and "Princess Bride" with its narration and memories of a childhood Christmas and the gift they really wanted. So, with all that in mind, what keeps this from being the new holiday classic? Well, as mentioned it is a bit derivative of older movies that do the narration framing in better ways. A lot of the movie feels like filler waiting to get to the point of the story. A lot of the jokes have funny set ups, but don't go all the way through with the joke. Steve Zahn as the father is written too frustrating for the majority of the film. A lot of the movie is not grounded enough to take me back to the time period, and not stylistic enough to remind me of childhood imagination. But the movie pulls things together in the ending. It is so sweet, that it makes up for a lot of the movie's shortcomings. Unlike most NES games, this movie has an ending that makes it worth going through the rest of the story.

Love this movie all year round, a mix between the goonies and a Christmas story! “You ever put socks and shoes on your hands and crawl around? ROARRR it’s just me Conner, I’m not really a lion.”

In its best moments, this enjoyable and often charmingly reminiscent holiday movie could be a 21st century version of the 1983 Christmas classic A CHRISTMAS STORY. There are many general similarities, and the two would make a great double feature on a snowy afternoon. I'm not sure this one is quite strong enough to become required annual viewing, but there's lots to appreciate here. I'm a hair bit too old to understand the Nintendo craze - I'm from the Atari era - but I think every generation has had a game or a toy or something that ruled our daydreams and became an item that everyone who was truly "cool" or "groovy" must own. The movie is obviously made with a lot of love and nostalgia for a bygone era, with scenes that wonderfully illustrate how childhood memories are easy to exaggerate. The young actors here are all impressive and represent a wide variety of exaggerated but familiar archetypes - the older bully who felt like he was 30, the "weirdo" who spoke random thoughts and made a meal of pencil erasers, and so on... Things bog down a bit at the 3/4 mark but pick up toward the end with a sweetly sentimental but not overly cloying ending ideal for this season. And things may not necessarily turn out as you expect. This is pretty much family friendly, although an extended scene of projectile vomiting had me turning away from the screen for a couple minutes - but I'm sensitive to that kind of stuff. Otherwise, grab the family and enjoy.

An absolute holiday classic by any standard. It is absolutely a modern day Christmas Story. It can be watched around the holiday's or all year round. The nostalgia mixed with sincere story telling is worth the watch over and over again!

Great and simple movie

8-Bit Christmas is the best Christmas movie made in years! It's a nostalgic ode to 80's trends, social norms, and "millennial" beloved films such as A Christmas Story, Home Alone, Star Wars, and Die Hard. What's special about 8-Bit Christmas is its generational appeal. Kids will love it because it's relatable and legitimately funny, parents will love it because childhood nostalgia, grandparents will love it because parenting nostalgia - it's a win, win all around! What more could you want for the holidays? I’ll tell you… 8-Bit Christmas isn't just great. It goes a step further, pushing itself into "classic" territory with a fresh new message you'll never forget!
