9 to 5 Reviews

Forget movie--this film was an absolute movement! From quick writing, to hidden subtlety, to outlandish coincidences! With three main characters that most every woman can relate to, in terms of personality and social standing. For the time--the 1980s it--does a fantastic job with representation, with many minorities playing supporting roles(that do NOT exist to help them, but as actual people with their own lives), dealing with the stigma around rehabilitation, in a lesser sub-plot. Not to mention the frustrations of the everyday working woman are shown clearly, presenting the viewer with an ultimatum: "Will you finally understand the world?" This is not just a movie. This is a story, about all of our stories. Any critc that doesn't focus on the moral of this movie is missing the point entirely, and choosing to ignore real-word issues.

One of the best classic cult comedies ever!

Fonda, Tomlin, and Parton elevate this timeless comedy whose themes are still resonant today. With a witty script and fantastic performances, it's easy to lay back and enjoy the ride.

I was 10 years old when this came out, and I thought it was great. Having seen it recently, I thought parts of it were kind of boring.

I think most of us have that small handful of ride-or-die movies, the cinematic equivalent of our best friends. They are the movies that are always there for us no matter what, and they consistently seem to have the knack to help us dust ourselves off, pick ourselves up and start all over again. This is one of those movies for me and has been for decades. And after my latest screening, it just keeps getting better and better. There's not a single thing I would change, and each viewing makes me appreciation certain aspects more. This time I marveled over the underrated comic performance of Fonda. Tomlin is the glue that holds it all together and Parton was the fresh comic find that caught our attention, but Fonda has a lot of really marvelous moments here and some truly classic line readings, particularly in a scene with her ex-husband where she talks about smoking pot and doing "M&Ms". And kudos also to Dabney Coleman who makes the smarmiest of bosses somehow likable. And his turnabout in Parton's dream sequence really illustrates his versatility. I could write pages and paragraphs about how I adore this film, but like our best friends, sometimes a simple "I love you" is all that is needed. (P.S. if you watch this on DVD, be sure and listen to the audio commentary track as well with all three ladies and producer Bruce Gilbert)

Utterly hilarious, vastly head of its time female stoner office comedy from 1980.

One of my all time favourite films. Pitch perfect. Laugh out loud hilarious and a feminist trailblazer. Love those women, their witty take downs and camaraderie.

Very good and very funny, and also groundbreaking. It's hilarious watching all the triggered thumbsuckers whining about this movie, diaperboys who have a bug up their butts about women (usually because they can't attract any, at least not anyone of quality), but it's well-acted, well-scripted, well-done. Dabney Coleman is fantastic, the three leads are fantastic.....even Sterling Hayden makes an appearance in this movie, I was shocked to discover that upon a recent rewatch. The movie is as timely now as ever....and it's also got a great theme song.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. This shows the disparities women face in the workforce through comedy and toughness and tender moments. This shows ultimately how we get through anything as people when we stick together and take a stand for what's right.

Hilariously dark and unpredictable, 9 to 5 breaks gender barriers and comedic barriers alike.

I thought this was an interesting documentary about a day that has received an awful lot of attention and of which there are a lot of other documentaries about. I thought it stood out perhaps more than other such shows because it has 'talking head contributions' from such people as the then President George W. Bush (jnr.) and Condoleeza Rice. I felt it was quite insightful to hear the reactions of the staff to what they could find out about what had happened during different times of the pivotal day. This is worth a watch, yes.

9 to 5 is a 1980 movie by Colin Higgins. Starring Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Paton, Dabney Coleman, Elizabeth Wilson, and Sterling Hayden. Mostly set in an office building where sexism and favoritism is present and how 3 female employees that are different become friends with one common goal. Chaos ensues as Violet, played by Lily Tomlin, thinks they have poisoned the boss Hart, played by Dabney Coleman, after he goes to the hospital. After the misunderstanding they form a plan to get back at Hart while at the same time improve the company. The directing of the film stood out to me because it properly depicted how women were treated unfairly in the past. The film shows the pay difference between men and women when one women employee got fired for looking into how much men were paid compared to her. In the movie Hart disapproved of the idea of having female bosses which shows the sexism at play. Hart would also harass them and would not respect for any women employees at all. It really stood out when they had the scene where they are fantasizing about their work. Each fantasized scene is in a different movie style. The other styles used is Cinderella, Wild west cowboy, and a horror movie. With it giving more detail about how they want to give the same treatment their getting back to Hart usually ending with them killing or hurting Hart. It was nice to see that instead of the women being harassed they show the opposite happening to Hart. I overall like the movie and would recommend it to other viewers. If you are interested in a movie with strong female characters and comedy, I would definitely recommend it. Even though it was released in 1980 there is still a lot of comedy that holds up today and would highly likely make you laugh. It was satisfying to see Hart get what he deserved and them going back and forward on how to deal with the situation to fix the company. I would rate this movie a 4.5 out of 5. I didn't give it a 5-star review because it got a little messy with the plot at the end. It just seemed like the plot was rushed and cut down a bit toward the end causing me to not follow the ending of the movie well. But even with that ending I would watch it again.

9 to 5 is a comedy movie film directed by Colin Higgins and released in 1980. The film stars Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dabney Coleman. The movie showcases how sexism and favoritism were present in a company in the 1970s. We will see how three female employees with different backgrounds become friends with one common goal. Chaos unfolds when Violet, played by Lily Tomlin, believes she accidentally poisoned her boss with rat poison. After some misunderstandings with the rat poison, the three friends hatch a plan to exact revenge on their tyrannical, sexist boss Hart. Despite the tyranny of their boss, the three ladies managed to improve the company with their hard work. The directing of the film stood out to me because it properly depicted how women were treated unfairly in the past. The problem of pay disparities between men and women was shown in the film when a female employee got fired for researching the wages received by men and women. We could also evidently see sexism in play when the sexist Hart disapproved of the idea of having female bosses. Hart also does not respect women and would constantly harass them. The directing especially stood out to me during the three female employees' imagined revenge fantasy sequences against their boss. The directing of the revenge sequences stood out to me because we could see how each of their revenge sequences correlated with how Hart treated them. This correlation could be seen during Doralee's revenge sequence when she was harassing Hart, just like how he harassed her. It would usually be women who would get harassed in movies, so it was a nice change in scenery when this scene showed up. I enjoyed watching the movie and would recommend it to other viewers. I would suggest watching this movie if you are interested in comedy and strong female characters. Although it has been over 40 years since the film was released, it is still something viewers could enjoy and get a good laugh at. The film addresses the issues of sexism and pays disparities, which are still an ongoing problem today. I would rate this movie a four out of five because I enjoy revenge plots. It was satisfying to see women in charge and get revenge on the boss. The movie was funny and entertaining but still showed the treatment of women in the past. We could see how sexism is prevalent in an office and how companies could improve by having equal rights for everyone. I liked how the three ladies faced sexism and grew as a person after dealing with their sexist boss. I didn't give the movie a five out of five because the plot was a little messy during the later end of the film. Although the movie is supposed to be a comical revenge film, some scenes felt a little excessively dramatic and unneeded.

9 to 5 is way ahead of its time, with a killer cast and giving us arguably the best bop of our lifetime. Lily Tomlin is outstanding throughout the whole film; her sarcasm and deadpan delivery nails it every time. Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda are wonderful too, of course. It's a little slow to get going, especially the extended "fantasy" scenes, but by the middle of the second act, we're roaring along and laughing our asses off. I love the feminist and anti-capitalist themes throughout, even though it's a little oversimplified at times, but hey, it's an 80s comedy, so it's hard to ask for more. I really appreciated how there is no "white knight" male savior who comes in and reminds the audience that it's "nOt AlL mEn" - sure, there are sympathetic male characters, like Doralee's husband and Violet's son, but none of them have to come in and save the day at the end. This film also does a great job of exploring all the different types misogynistic people; there are the overtly sexist bosses, the stalking ex-husbands, and even the women who use their power to tear down other women for their own personal gain. Each type has their prejudices addressed without forcing the audience to feel sympathy for any of them. A firm and uplifting message, hilarious acting, and music that slaps - 9 to 5 is certainly worth a watch, and may resonate even better in the modern age than when it came out.

I am shocked that I liked this movie as much as I did. 9/10

9 to 5 (the song) is a fantastic, toe-tapper that I always enjoy listening to. 9 to 5 (the movie) is okay. Dolly Parton is absolutely charming, Lily Tomlin is hilarious, and Jane Fonda, well, she's there. The tone of this movie is uneven, ranging from goofy comedy to somewhat dramatic. It never quite finds its balance. Plus, it feels different watching it now. It's definitely dated. I'll always love the song, though.

This office comedy classic was really good. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman, and the rest of the cast did a fantastic job in this movie. The plot of the movie was entertaining, humorous, and dramatic. It's about how women are discriminated in the workforce and what it would take to be treated equally. If you haven't seen this movie yet, check it out sometime. It's worth watching.
