A Coffee in Berlin Reviews

Mar 24, 2024

Good movie, not great. Easy on the eye, not profound but very easy to watch, funny at times. Shades of Woody Allen. One I'd rewatch for pleasure.

Great acting, really good portrait of Berlin

A bit interesting and engaging at times, tedious at others. "A Coffee In Berlin" gives us a nice performance by Tom Schilling as a character I'm familiar with. I've seen quite a few Nicos in my time. The specific qualities he conveys- lost or confused, great indifference, flakiness, forced attempts at interaction- are typical of a lot of this type of slacker guy with little or no sense of real direction or purpose. As I said, though, there is some tedium here. It really seems like a rather jagged, unconnected scenes edited together, though there is some flow when the Julika character is introduced. This is the best stretch of the film for me. Her character is interesting and certainly offers Nico a chance at establishing something real and significant in his life. Who knows what it could lead to? But, he blows that, too. Nice work by Dohnányi, Klawitter, and Hoseman. But the best performance for me was Friederike Kempter's Julika. Kempster brings to life a lithe, lovely, and brimming young woman with sense of nervous joy in life. Nice if uneven. 2.9 stars

Beautiful movie. Funny, poignant, and poetic.

Lots of layers here and all in search of a cup of coffee.

A dialogue driven film where the slacker protagonist drifts away in Berlin. He meet many people, he go many places and everywhere there are loads of words. Shot in black and white, nicely scored and a gentle humor makes it snappy and interesting. It reminds me a lot of something the younger Jarmuch would do. Some very smooth shots - especially in the end where the short stills appear rapidly. With some works of graffiti artist Blu on the screen too. Nice. I liked it, but it felt rather long even with a short playime. I've read it was a graduation project - that's pretty impressive, even if it's not especially fresh or original. 6.5 out of 10 meatballs.

Great depiction of that age where you just can't seem to start. I loved it. The black and white was an excellent choice. Fully captured the feeling.

Frances Ha or Tiny Furniture featuring a German lad. Spoiler alert: the poor bastard finally gets his cup of coffee. Interesting.

I might enjoy it with more viewings, but the films message was delivered a little too heavy handed. The performances and the cinematography were really great, though. Definitely elevated the material.

No. No. No. The critics got this wrong. They are in love with black & white films made in Berlin, but believe me, this is no "Wings of Desire" Wim Wenders' masterpiece. The protoganist (at least we're supposed to take his side) is an immature jerk who mistreats friends, family, coffee clerks, a chubby childhood classmate, and a rather pathetic new neighbor. Tell me, what are the positives in his favor that should make us care about him? OK, MAYBE I felt a little sorry for how he goes through nearly an entire day with 4 failed attempts at getting his first cup of coffee. But, when his father gives him a little money, he spends it on vodka, so I no longer had empathy for him. It doesn't help that he has the face of a weasel. This is like that totally burnt, stale coffee that you get in New Jersey diners, sloppy and undrinkable. Skip this one if you have any sense and self-respect.

saw this on a plane, very good

A Coffee In Berlin feels like a German, Woody Allen film. Most of this doesn't feel very fresh, even if lead actor Tom Schilling is really good in his role. We've seen a lot of "delayed adolescence" films, and we've seen a lot better ones. What really makes this world hard to be in is how obnoxious the supporting characters are. Yes, it makes Niko seem more likable, but I didn't want to be around these people any longer. I can't imagine any American viewers getting a lot of this movie, so I would just skip it.

the Julia thing reminded me so much of the Mathew Perry - Julia Roberts sequence of events in FRIENDS, when he called her fat and then she got thin and then seduced him and left him naked in a bath stall. maybe this is an actual reference, i didn't check

Has me yearning for a cup of coffee that doesn't exist. Not even in my dreams.

indulgent imho. and morose: even more so given yours truly's current state of mind. if one makes a comparison, frances ha wins hands down in terms of likability, enjoyment (and more). this did however, make me lust for berlin.
