A Hidden Life Reviews

Feb 15, 2025

A must for the world to not forget what a dictator, ruler can and will do to history. People are not recognizing evil when it is seen today. Our moral compass must always be in check.

This almost felt like days of heaven a bit, mostly in the fields, but it's completely different, a bit long, but good

"A cathedral of the sense" - an apt remark I once read about this wonderful soul prodding piece of true cinema A hidden life truly took me on a journey beginning in WW2 Germany with its intense intro to the rise of Hitler's rule as well as its showcasing of rural soulful farming life. The journey made us feel the pure untainted joy that permeated the beings of these real people's lives. Franz's struggle of having to sacrifice everything he holds dear in the physical world to maintain dominion over his soul is an enchanting depiction of what it truly means to be in alignment with true divinity. Love for all - Your family, Your friends, Your community and especially mankind as a whole is what I was again reminded is the highest arena of thought. Beautiful movie, would definitely recommend to all.

A movie about true caracter and the will to stand against all evil that wants to tear your principles down. With an amazing view, this film is like a fresh breath for the soul and call for awakening in these times. I finished it being different, a lot different than I was before watching it.

Yes it’s beautifully shot, but it’s sooo long and meandering… It does however, make you wonder just how many “conscientious objectors” we get in times of war… Hacksaw Ridge has a similar theme, and it’s a better movie.

Visually stunning, and heartbreaking, the best film I've seen this year. It stayed in my minds for weeks afterwards.

Its poetic nature, empathy evoked by the poignant philosophical narrative, and James Howard's music strike right at the heart. When a film elicits such a powerful catharsis that you can barely hold back tears, writing anything more becomes futile.

Malick complicates the narrative in so many interesting ways that I just don't think I want or need to see a more straightforward biopic about this man.

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen! It's beautiful, loving, wise, and engaging. I learned from this movie. Terrence Malick, the writer and director, is one of the all-time-great film-makers. He also did "Days of Heaven," one of the most beautiful movies ever made. Yey!!!

Like all Malick's movies, you expect beautiful visuals and to feel the movie, more than understand it, but no amount of clever prose can do justice to this work of art. I could just feel Fani's grief but grief with fear for herself and her girls and the future. It haunts me.

A slow burn of a movie but one that is deeply moving and has beautiful scenery.

A meditative emotional viewing. Your understanding of the film is what Malick wants you to see. A story needed to be told and heard in a time where self obsession and nihilism reigns supreme. Allow this art to take you away from it all and find your true purpose cause that's what this film does.

The biggest surprise in A Hidden Life is its realtively conventional structure. For Malick, who since 2000 has been methodically pursuing a narrative style that prioritizes the relatively mundane, empty spaces in his storytelling, the film stands out as a much more immediately digestible work. There are still plenty of the director's established traits, particularly the somewhat abrupt editing style, the thematic focus on spirituality and the natural world, and the wandering internal monologues as narration, and there is still plenty of power in each. However, I'd argue that there is less complexity and strength in the plot; ostensibly a treatise on the conflict between an individual's morality and religious convictions in an uncompromising time, August Diehl's portrayal of nonfiction conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter almost feels like low-hanging fruit, such was the uncompromisingly evil nature of the Third Reich. The premise seems like a thinking man's version of the same principles touched upon in Hacksaw Ridge, without as much of the immediate shock value. Much more convincing is the social element of the film, the ostracism that Valerie Pachner's Franziska endures in her hometown as a result of her husband's stance, but this is treated almost as a subplot in comparison to the suffering of Franz. Apart from that, the film really does not seem to justify its length; Malick composes gorgeous shots of the earth in its beauty and bloom, an almost ethereal realm poisoned by the evil of humanity, but he doesn't opt for many long, lingering shots; the narrative feels pumped for length unnecessarily. The film is still unwaveringly strong (and relevant) in its thematic convictions, features good performances, and a reputable director seemingly 'returning to Earth' after spending so much time operating in a somewhat alienating style. Worthwhile, if you can budget the time for it. (3.5/5)

The movie is a little murky as to the man's motivations.

Shot after shot of delicious, incarnation life. All of Malick's trademarks are here, but he focuses them into a straightforward story that is at once heartbreaking and achingly beautiful.

Stunning cinema photography while gloom hangs constantly around this viewer's neck. Admittedly, it was a difficult movie to watch to the end which takes 3 hours of emotional commitment. What decision would you have made?

What a wonderful story this film is. This is my pick for Best Picture of 2019! Terrence Malick directed a beauty.
