A Serious Man Reviews

Apr 11, 2025

Tedious. I could'nt keep watching.

Thought-provoking movie -- you'd want to be in a headspace open to ambiguity, monotony, and confusion, which is all what the main character is going through. Presents a true-to-life type of trial of faith, basically like the Biblical story of Job, where the main character is beset by disappointments and harsh challenges without clarity. Very ambiguous ending, to boot!

After this movie, I don't know how the Coen bros. continued. To me, it was completely uninteresting and unfunny.

I enjoyed the film more while watching it-- not so much in it's totality. It was quite funny in a cringy dark humor way. However, I dislike the lesson and perspective on life that it offers. I thought the characters were weak and distasteful people and the film truly portrayed life as a meaningless, unjust, dreadful place. It leaves you feeling like you want to shake the pessimism off of you, like you have just spent time with intensely ungrateful, pessimistic people that preach their victimhood.

What everyone dislikes about the movie is exactly what I love about it (the lack of clear answers, the repeated lines, the grilling of organized religion, etc.) and it's great that the Coen's cashed their No Country for Old Men check on this.

This movie is a bit too flat for my liking. I could not get past the first 45 minutes or so… the characters are all so boring. I understand that some people may relate more to the characters than other people, depending on their background. This movie comes across as a boring family story that falls flat outside of the family. I think the main character could have worked better if he had some quirks or any depth, but he’s so lifeless. I didn’t find any of the characters likable.

It took me a couple of viewings to realize this films brilliance. This movie may seem aimless and mundane at times, but that’s the point I feel. Essentially I interpret its meaning to be the central characters attempt to find meaning in the arbitrary and coincidental, and how the chaotic nature of existence can test faith to the breaking point. Lots of other meanings and parables sprinkled throughout, so if you’re in an existential place while watching this I think you will be in for a good time. The characters are all fascinating as well, with the usual Coen brothers humor.

Boring, pointless, felt like watching a joke without a punchline.

I was surprised while watching this film, how much I saw of myself in Lawrence Gopnik, that I have never seen depicted in film before. His inability to stand up for himself, having trouble finding room to talk in a conversation, his wanting to understand everything. A Serious Man takes what sounds like a terrible concept, and makes it an amazing film with beautiful photography with bright and vivid colors, engaging dialogue, and one of the best lead performances I've ever seen in a film. A Serious Man may not be for everybody, but it was definitely for me.

What a waste of my time. I expected some interesting ending after all that boredom, but the ending meant nothing. I'll give it 1 star because it captured the 60s pretty well.

Imagine Norm McDonald, wandering through a home as family and friends sit shivah, jotting down incomplete bits of anecdotes and family stories, then trying to make a joke of all he gathered, ultimately forgetting the punchline. That would be more entertaining than this pointless film.

I watched this on DVD. I enjoyed several of the other Coen Brothers' films I've seen, so I was looking forward to this one. However, I struggled with it because of the many Jewish cultural references in it which I didn't understand. The story appears straightforward, at least superficially, but it seems to me to be making a big deal of trivial subject matter. Overthinking, at a frustratingly slow pace is how I would sum it up. That's not to say that the film is bad, and I found some of the parts I understood to be interesting. I also thought it started very obscurely, and ended very abruptly, which left me feeling indifferent and unsatisfied. Afterwards, I watched some of the DVD extras to see if I could make more sense of it all. It helped a little, but I've concluded that the movie was made to emphasise the uncertain nature of life. It's just meant to destabilise people and make them think! That's OK, but I still prefer the Coen's other movies. I can't really recommend this one.

I've tried watching A Serious Man a few times over the years. The first time, I was disappointed by its lack of the dark comedy or tense, twisty plotting I'd come to expect if the Coen brothers. This most recent time, I tried to watch without any preconceived opinions. As a story, there's not much there. It's about a beleaguered guy who never wins. I'd say unless someone is very familiar with Jewish culture, they might see it the same way. This movie is bold, daring non-Jewish viewers to figure out the Jewish terminology, customs and attitudes. Casting was seemingly done by someone on a mission to find every stereotype represented. They did a great job, as did the terrific cast.

Meh, not my cup of tea... The intro was really interesting, but as the time passed, I just kept yawning.

This is a very quirky film - I suppose its fairly typical Coen brothers material to an extent, depicting the downfall of someone in a quite specific way, centering on a community of Jews. Its not exactly greatly comedic in an obvious, visual way but I did find it amusing at times. Its hard to put my finger on where the comedy comes from, I suppose its to do with the mundanity of many things building up certain consequences - it'd be hard not to feel sorry for the main character, Larry Gopnik. I'm not Jewish but I can only imagine some of said situations/circumstances. I enjoyed the film, I felt it was reasonably well made, even though I probably didn't fully 'get' all the references and so on. If your a fan of the Coen brothers work, then I would recommend this film - if not then this may or may not appeal to you. If it sounds a bit niche/bizarre, then perhaps give this a miss.

This is not only my favorite Coen Brothers movie, it is my favorite film of all time. This modern comedic retelling of the Book of Job is hilarious, poignant, and delves into the deepest mysteries of existence all at the same time. It is the most quoted movie in my immediate and extended family and we have a tradition of watching it all together every other Thanksgiving. Like "The Big Lebowski" and "Fargo," I never get tired of seeing this movie! To those who dislike and don't understand "A Serious Man," all I have to say is, "Accept the mystery."

A Serious Man, probably the most under-appreciated of the Coen Brothers' films, deals with a variety of complex themes ranging from the relationship between actions and consequences to the randomness of occurrences in life. Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) is a professor of science, a man who believes that all things happen for a reason, an outlook that makes it difficult for him to deal with the fact that misfortune and death seem to follow him like a lost puppy. As stylish and well-executed as any film in the Coen canon, the humor is bone-dry and the drama (as improbable as it may be) feels real, all thanks to a clever script, sound performances (especially Richard Kind, the brother with the sebaceous cyst), and the jolting final scene that, in retrospect, sums things up beautifully.

This amazingly tight and thoughtful movie about a man living his life in the 1960's amidst changing times and personal strife. Michael Stuhlbarg makes this film as a Jewish man in a gentile world seeking answers and questioning his faith. He is highly engaging and watchable in this one. The religious undertones, or the mystery of religious rites of passage, can't help but make you think and question life and existence throughout this movie. As in any Coen film the dialogue and visuals are precise and important. No scene and no word is wasted. Richard Kind is brilliant as Stuhlbarg's deeply troubled brother. This is a comedy, but a dark comedy for sure. The musical choices are excellent, as always. This one is best when watched more than once.

An unfunny dud, packed with many references to things only a person raised in Jewish culture would understand. Just about every character is annoying. I'm a fan of the Coen brothers, and if they want to indulge themselves with a movie so focused on the less entertaining aspects of Jewish culture, I'm all for it. I'm just sorry I sat and watched it, thinking it would be another great Coen brothers movie. It's not.
