El guionista y protagonista Sebastian Maniscalco decidió hacer una película que plasmara la relación que tuvo con su padre en la vida real. Al ver el resultado final, se nota que es una película que actúa como una autobiografía que apela a lo ficticio, pero no deja de sentirse como una declaración sobre la vida del autor. About My Father es una comedia americana bastante obvia con temas sobre la familia. El conflicto que se presenta es la manera en la que Sebastian trata de hacer que su padre no lo haga quedar mal frente a sus futuros suegros. La película tiene un humor que funciona bien en la mayoría de los diálogos, dejando de lado algunas actuaciones exageradas y hay momentos que sí son hilarantes como la escena del jet acuático y el corte de cabello de Tigger. Lo único que esta película necesitaba era duplicar la comedia para que el humor no se quedase solo en los diálogos y gestos de los personajes, pero más que nada intensificar los conflictos para que la historia fuera más llamativa. La relación entre Sebastian y Salvo es bastante orgánica y es algo que pudieron aprovechar para que hubiera un choque más conflictivo con los padres de Ellie o para que Sebastian tenga más razones para discutir con su padre. Faltaba potenciar bastante el conflicto para que la resolución final fuera más emotiva cuando Sebastian se da cuenta de que su padre siempre ha sido algo importante en su vida. La cena del pavo era algo que podría haber dado lugar a un conflicto más intento con la familia de Ellie y eso hubiera sido también fascinante de ver, pero el guion va por el camino fácil haciendo que no haya un conflicto más fuerte. El romance entre Sebastian y Ellie era algo que también necesitaba trabajarse más y hasta indagar en los negocios de la familia de Ellie. Cuando Sebastian descubre sobre las pinturas de Ellie, eso también pudo dar lugar aun conflicto más personal que afectara la relación de Ellie con sus padres. La película decide sacarse eso de la manga a último momento y se soluciona rápido. La película acaba sintiéndose floja al no desarrollar bastante de la trama y puede hasta sentirse aburrida. Lo único que mantiene la película con vida es su humor y los mensajes positivos que deja sobre la familia. La película termina dejando una buena enseñanza sobre apreciar a los familiares a pesar de los conflictos. Sebastian siempre ha recibido el apoyo de su padre y le cuesta mantener una relación con él debido a su deseo de casarse con Ellie. Salvo incluso admite que le preocupa que su hijo lo deje, pero el hecho de que Sebastian se case no significa que abandonara a su padre para siempre. Salvo había llevado a Sebastian a Estados Unidos para que tuviera un mejor futuro y es lo que logro conseguir. Ahora le toca a Sebastian escribir el resto de su historia y aunque él duda del estilo de vida de su padre, al final entiende que es gracias Salvo que Sebastian está en su posición actual. Es claro el mensaje que la película deja y otro factor que le juega a la película a favor es la actuación de Robert De Niro. Su carrera ha ido cambiando bastante con altos y bajos desde que comenzó a participar en comedias y parodiar su rol de mafioso en películas anteriores. Pero la actuación de De Niro y sus técnicas que le dieron un buen perfil hacen que él le dé un buen sabor a cualquier película que participe. Incluso si De Niro participa en una mala película, su actuación no deja de brindar algo positivo. About My Father termina siendo una comedia blanda que solo se salva por su humor, su mensaje y la actuación de Robert De Niro. Pudo haber sido una comedia mucho más divertida y aunque puede parecerse un poco a Meet The Fockers, se queda corta. Su mensaje sobre el valor de la familia y Robert De Niro son lo único destacable que esta película ofrece. Mi calificación final para esta película es un 6/10.

Sebastian Maniscalco is funny as hell. This movie is funny as hell. If you’re so uptight & can’t enjoy some good sight gags, & don’t get his comedy, then don’t watch it. It’s silly, heartwarming and lighthearted. It’s not gonna win an academy award, but nobody expects this from a comedy. DeNiro pulls off being his dad perfectly & the surrounding cast of his wife’s family play the “straight men” well. A fun watch. Have a few drinks and enjoy it. Lighten up, Francis.

Nothing of extraordinary happens in this movie but i really enjoyed its lightheartedness nature and simplicity. It went by really fast, because i was having so much fun.

This is one of the stupidest movies we've tried to watch in a long time. Good actors, terrible script. Turned it off after 25 - 30 minutes. Definitely do not recommend. Don't waste two hours of your life.

I really liked this movie! Sebastain Maniscalco and Robert De Niro have excellent chemistry in this comedic tale of father and son. De Niro is at his best! It made me laugh for most of the movie. Very funny, feel good story. Kim Cattrall, Lesie Gibb and David Rasche also play their roles very well, adding many comedic parts to the movie. If you need a good laugh, please give this one a try. You won't be disappointed!!

Lots of laughs easy watch!

Robert De Niro protagonista assoluto di questo film con pochissime note di novità; dove anzi i richiami a numerose commedie simili sono evidenti. La sceneggiatura non offre nulla, i dialoghi sono mediamente poco interessanti, con poche note veramente divertenti e più situazioni imbarazzanti e alla ricerca di una risata che non arriva. Anche i personaggi sono davvero poco interessanti e molto piatti, oltre ad essere delle "macchiette" che non aggiungono nulla al film. Molto carino l'incipit con le origini delle due famiglie ma nel complesso un film che lascia davvero poco e che soprattutto non riesce a divertire.

I’m from Chicago and Italian and this movie reminds me of my life. It has all the elements of a good movie. Had a couple of not that funny parts but it had me Smiling the whole time from feeling a connection to the characters. It was very relatable to my life. Watched with my father and it was a great movie to bond over. It’s a movie I can watch once a year or so.

Easy watching, funny at times. Two families who come together for a gathering.

Great family movie. Lots of fun and brought back so many childhood memories. Scenes with Sebastian and De Nerogoing after each other were great fun.

This picture was near perfect. Perhaps it could have been funnier but nonetheless it was a good warm-hearted movie that made you feel good. Don't always listen or pay attention to the top critics, judge a movie by your heart and you'll be more content.

Decent but nothing that got me rolling

Given the actors involved, this was such a disappointing, pedestrian movie that just barely passed the time and almost made me feel I was wasted my time. De Niro must have done this to honor Italian immigrants, not for money. The acting was "by the numbers" and generated almost zero emotional involvement. Not even sure how the love birds met and fell in love - though their romance seemed genuine enough, it felt forced nevertheless.
