Absolute Power Reviews

Mar 21, 2025

An engaging thriller, if not Clint Eastwood's best.

I like the character of Mr. Eastwood, the story at the beginning it's so interesting… but the ending doesn't feel real, it resolves the conflict in a way that doesn't feels believable. But very entertaining.

Absolute Power sees Eastwood at his effortless, slyboots best, infused with a predictably deliberate sensibility. A constantly spiralling game of cat-and-mouse, that steadily raises the stakes throughout, boasting an all-star, high-calibre cast and seemingly no one under the age of 30. Eastwood deftly cranks up the suspense at the beginning, and by the end, he's cruising along so briskly that he can afford to throw away the climactic, violent scenes other directors would belabour. Although the film ends on a whimper, it offers one of Eastwood's more understated and deeply felt performances. Unhurried and genteel but enlivened with suspense and bursts of sly humour, there's a real dad energy to this film. Granted it's mostly in how everyone talks with a lot of delightful back and forth between Eastwood and Harris; Gene Hackman plays an absolute slimeball and the supporting cast all fulfil their roles exceptionally well. Married by William Goldman's taut script and a fantastic, if somewhat repetitive, score by regular collaborator Lennie Niehaus (Eastwood, of course, contributed to this as well, mainly in the gorgeous piano pieces); Absolute Power remains a terrific and solidly enjoyable suspense thriller about impending mortality. Even if the plot is a doomsday version of Bill Clinton's Paula Jones problem...

Created an account on rotten tomatoes just to be able to rate this. Should proudly receive the raspberry award for poorest screenplay of the century. Unbelievably lazy plot writing. Watch it and waste your time.

It's ok. The main issue is the subpar pacing. Scenes like the 15 minute killing that sets everything up just drags more than anything or dialouge that goes on a bit too long. Even the set up to capture Clint drags out. It's clear these scenes are trying to build suspense but this never really does as much as it just prods along at a leisurely pace. The acting is the highlight and is solid all around from the cast and does make it easier to watch these slow/draggy scenes. The romance subplot between his daughter & Harris feels forced and could've been cut out though. Everything else is jus ok enough. This needed a better soundtrack as its very boring and hardly used at times giving this a very dry feeling throughout. There are a few farfected/plot conviences as well. How he doesn't recognize that is POTUS for hours watching, he just happens to see him on the 온라인카지노추천 as he's about to leave, he happens to have a cop uniform to escape, he somehow becomes his driver without no one noticing or being alerted to him. Scenes are shot well and this alternates to boring scenes of dialouge between other supporting characters explaining the plot and what they know so it jumps around quite a bit in the middle but makes sense enough. It's very clear Clint Eastwood isn't as strong working with thrillers as he is with other genres like War, Drama, and Westerns. The writing, pacing (which is huge for a thriller more than any other genre), and music all needed better execution. If your a die hard fan of any actors in this AND a fan of thrillers than maybe give this a watch. Otherwise you can skip this.

A história do filme é um tremendo PLOTA. Mas, os furos de roteiro, de interpretação, de sonoplastia e a má direção que deram nesse filme, não conseguiu me motivar a dar mais estrelinhas. Esperava mais de Clint.

Thought it was much better than the reviews suggest. Yes the plot was stretched, but such a great cast makes it worth a look!

This is a relatively decent action crime film, centering on political corruption. Plot wise its a little predictable perhaps but not bad, being based on a book by David Baldacci. There's a decent cast, with Clint Eastwood playing the accidental witness to the key event, a burglar/thief named Luther Whitney, while Gene Hackman plays the current POTUS. This film was fairly interesting but nothing special - I don't think I can say much more than that really. Not bad, not great, its ok. I wouldn't expressly recommend it as such, no.

Amazing and brilliant film. The critics are absolute idiots for suggesting this has a rating in the 50’s. 84/100.

Of all the films that Clint Eastwood somehow has contributed to, this must by far be the poorest. The novelle based plot fundament is good enough, but the film version soon starts to fail. Whether it was the screenplay or the direction, or probably some of both, there is a rather large number of logical flaws and several plot holes, and quite a lot of clumsy dialogue. Considering an all star cast, some of the acting performances are of surprisingly low standards, with a hugely overacting Judy Davis as Presidential Chief of Staff at the very bottom. It's as if Scott Glenn and Dennis Haysbert, who neither impress as secret service agents. actually are embarrassed by Davis' unprofessional performance, and not by her character's highly stressful display. Even Ed Harris seems to struggle believing in what he's supposed to say and do, while Eastwood comes out reasonably well, together with the late E.G. Marshall. Regardless, the total is not worth a screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

I miss films like this. Great cast and tight, if rather implausible script.

A really interesting story and a strong cast makes it work.

A by the numbers but not boring movie This picture is a generic Thriller by Eastwood but his directorial style stands out from the mediocre writing except for the inciting incident which is quite disturbing and the acting is pretty good so I'll recommend it.

Silly male power fantasy.

I thought it to be honed in and focused on the entire dilemna. However, there's not much to say with the mediocre script. The performances were outstanding. But the concept of it being 'big' didn't leave much for excitement. It seems like: A big thing happened, and they just lead it away without much interest. It's hard to describe, but if you see it, you'll know. But, the performances were fine from all actors. The script but them in a place of where you'll want to be. The director, which was Clint Eastwood, leads a certain realism to the story. All very good, some suspenseful scenes, but at the time it seems like it was okay, without much semblance. But, a very worthwhile picture. You should check it out.

I don't know, why most people dislike this movie. I found this interesting drama and deep. 3.5/5

One of the best films I had seen in a long time. Amazing cast!

Sep 3, 2018

Completely unrealistic. It starts off slow and then ends on a low note as well, but it is a decent Clint Eastwood thriller otherwise. Definitely not one of his best though. (First and only viewing - 9/3/2018)

Jul 2, 2018

A quick buildup and drama to start, the action begins to fade in the second half. Despite the somewhat unrealistic plot, Eastwood and Hackman are superb as always.

Fantastic thriller. Clint Eastwood does not disappoint. Enjoyable.
