Act of Valor Reviews

“Act of Valor” does enough of what it’s aiming for.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Aug 19, 2022

Shadowing real-life SEALs as they re-enact some of the most stunning combat sequences ever put to film, this is the closest a film has ever got to emulating a Call of Duty game.

Act of Valor isn't an awful film.

| Original Score: 2.5/4.0 | Sep 1, 2020

There is no debate: these are brave men, and what they have chosen to do as their occupation has most certainly saved lives ... I just wish their bravery was captured in a better film.

A mediocre low-budget action flick with a cool hook.

It's like watching beautifully film training exercises to sell people on signing up for the military.

Intense. Electrifying. Heart-pounding. Thrilling. Edge of your seat. Humbling. Proud to be an American.

A movie that works, largely because it manages to show its subject in a light no one has ever seen before. It's a compelling piece of cinema that doesn't try to stray too far from its strengths.

The nauseating over-use of first-person perspective is obviously intended to pull the audience into the film is the cinematic equivalent of watching someone else play a computer game whilst you're expected to applaud each time they score a head shot.

Do not miss it. [Full review in Spanish]

I understand the film, but I didn't like it because it felt like a snow job to me, a recruitment movie.

'U.S. Navy SEALS in combat are far more than anything Hollywood could ever write,' said co-director Mike McCoy. The real SEALS in 'Act of Valor' demonstrate this to be true.

| Original Score: 4.5/5 | May 27, 2016

"Act of Valor" plays out like an extended recruitment commercial.

| Oct 7, 2015

Act of Valor is a love letter to servicemen but it's also a disjointed mishmash of slick combat sequences paired with awkward performances and a generic storyline.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 30, 2012

The SEALs should stick to saving the world, and the movie makers should look at the differences between a movie and a recruitment video.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Sep 4, 2012

Although likely to delight patriotic American audiences, it will leave everyone else indifferent.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Aug 30, 2012

Would be nothing worth writing about, or even making, without the novelty of seeing some of America's greatest heroes in action.

| Original Score: 2.5/10 | Aug 22, 2012

It's very much a conventional thrill-ride action movie, though the claims to realism are undercut by too many video-game point-of-view shots as the soldiers engage the enemy.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jun 30, 2012

May have you longing for an old-fashioned era of 'square' propaganda, when it wouldn't have been considered a cool recruitment strategy to acknowledge that U.S. troops use constant profanity and splatter opponents' brains against the wall.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | May 11, 2012

Made me yearn for the nuanced screenwriting of Battleship, the moderate politics of Transformers 3 and the versatility and range of Sam Worthington and Taylor Kitsch.
