An Affair to Remember Reviews

Mar 8, 2025

A great Cary Grant movie. Most of it took place on a boat. There was a lot of romance. They go to Europe. They revisit each other in New York. I enjoy this era of films.

First of all, Cary Grant may be one of the icons of romantic cinema, and Deborah Kerr one of its most beautiful stars. That being said, both are fine in this movie, even though they are probably miscast. Kerr has an accent that is not remotely Bostonian, and Grant doesn't appear all that French, either. That aside, the first half of this movie is fine, at least with our two stars. The rest of the "passengers" all appear to be in First Class while acting like they've never been on a cruise before, often engaging in sophomoric behavior. That would be enough of a problem with the plot, but the second half goes overboard (pardon the pun). First of all, pretty bizarre that Kerr's character would hide her accident - she is supposedly intelligent, so she would likely realize how poorly this would treat the love of her life. Putting that aside, the side shows, particularly with the "choir" and astonishingly advanced children's orchestra feels like like little more than filler; removing a great deal of this would've shortened the movie without taking away from it. While I still enjoyed the movie, being a fan of both leads, it could have been far better.

Just a comment: Cathleen Nesbitt plays Cary Grant ‘s grandmother but she is only 16 years older than he is- a little far fetched.

Tão lindo, comovente, trágico, dramático e romântico, a moda antiga… Fofo...

A chick flick, yes, but a very good one at that. Originally, I gave this film four stars, but I've realised- just the soundtrack alone is five... best soundtrack ever.

A genuine tearjerker. Grant and Kerr have "chemistry" and make convincing what might be an outlandish scenario. Yes, I cried at the ending…helped along by the very moving theme song. This really is a must-see romance movie. Even if you are the world's most unromantic viewer.

I don't like Sleepless in Seattle. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like romcoms, chick flicks or love stories. That's not the issue at all. I simply don't like Sleepless in Seattle. I don't think it is a good movie and I find the character of Annie Reed to be a vexatious ninny, and quite frankly, a little creepy. Because of this, I've never really had much of an ambition to see An Affair to Remember, a movie that is referenced and quoted at nauseum throughout Sleepless in Seattle. That being said, An Affair to Remember ended up on my 2023 film journey through recommendation. And I must admit that I'm glad that it did! Sure, it's a bit saccharin and astoundingly chaste, but damn, the acting is magnificent. The chemistry between Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr is phenomenal (Grant took the role just so he could act with Kerr again). Both actors are at the top of their game. Cary Grant plays completely against type in this film. I jest! He plays a debonaire bachelor (what else?!) named Nickie Ferrante. Nickie has decided to retire his lothario-ways and settle down with a rich heiress. Kerr plays Terry McCay, a nightclub singer who, like Nickie, has decided to accept an offer of marriage (and domesticity) from a well-to-do suiter. Nickie and Terry meet by chance when they are both traveling alone aboard an ocean liner traveling from Europe to the United States. The duo share some witty repartee and discover they enjoy each other's company. Terry eventually joins Nickie as he visits his grandmother when the ship anchors near her home in the Mediterranean (this extended scene was by far my favorite). Eventually the trip is over, and Terry and Nickie realize that they have fallen in love. They depart the ship after making a pact that they shall meet each other at the top of the Empire State Building in six months if their current relationships don't work and their love for each other doesn't subside. Tragedy prevents the two from meeting, and their lives go on, each of them thinking they are doing what is best for the other by moving on with their lives apart. At this point the film becomes quite cloying and engages in full on melodrama. The ending is predictable, but one is too vested at this point to not see it through! The final scene is a full out onslaught of wrap-it-up schmaltz, but it's ultimately still a much more rewarding experience than having to see a single moment of Sleepless in Seattle ever again!

Why do people care about Cary and Deborah getting together? Laughing at them at dinner? That is disgusting. Outside of the nosey bastrds on the boat, the rest is great. Not the best romance film of the 50s, but nice all the same.

My mother's favourite movie. The shipboard dialogue and acting are superb. The story is little, maybe a lot, far fetched and contrived. The whole thing is badly dated - do men on a cruse ship vacation all wear suits and tie, the women, evening gowns and heels. I don't think they did, even back then.

One of my favorite movies. The final scene is a tear jerker. Cary Grant conveys so much by doing so little. A movie to watch time and again but don't forget the tissues!

It doesn't really get more romantically lush and sentimental than in An Affair to Remember, a film that epitomizes Golden Age Hollywood's take on love stories. This is like a Hallmark movie before there were Hallmark movies, but of exceedingly better quality.

When l saw this movie .It make me cry.

If you can get past the sluggish pace and dry humor, you'll find a deep and heartfelt love story in An Affair to Remember.

A film with a peculiar charm to it. I couldn't even tell you why I enjoyed watching it but I did and I'm not usually a romance sop. Maybe it felt slightly less confected and emotionally over analysed than modern romance films.

Wow. The cast really kills this movie and it has so much humor that I wasn't expecting. A fantastic movie that I was not expecting at all.

A finely pitched romance that makes a smooth transition in tone from witty, meet-cute banter to moving melancholy. A classic.

The main actors save this movie from bland direction and a nice but forgettable story

Someone needs to reach out to whoever that kid was that sang bass in the children's choir. That voice is unnatural and probably the result of some terrible pathological condition. Cary Grant settles into a role that was basically just real-life Cary Grant - a man so ludicrously attractive to women that they literally celebrate his engagement on the radio as a win for single men everywhere. Deborah Kerr is his witty intellectual match, knowledgeable of his behaviour but still enticed by his charm, as he is by hers. It's a classic battle of half-hearted wits on a transoceanic liner, where both act keep the other at arm's length while seeing where the exchange of semi-barbed dialogue will bring them, but then we get back to land and the tempo gets left on the boat; the chemistry between the two leads that drives the film can hardly work if the two are completely separated. Instead, we dive into Grant's painting career and Kerr's adolescent choir, which are hardly great substitutes, as the pair are separated by what can best be described as a lapse in personality on Kerr's part. But when the two do get the opportunity to share a set, it's a great romance and worthy of its status. Wasn't prepared for just how many musical numbers there were going to be for a film that isn't promoted or cited as a musical, but they're capably done and not a bad fit. Grant was 53 when this film was released, and damn if he couldn't get it like he was fresh off the set of The Philadelphia Story. (3.5/5)

If ever there was a film of two halves, this is it. The first half, in which Grant and Kerr fall for each other on a boat, is delightful - charming, light as air, amusing. When they leave the boat there is an abrupt change in tone and the frolics cease. This might not be so much of an issue if the remainder of the movie didn't hinge on a spectacularly flawed plot issue, namely - why doesn't she just tell him?!? We are led to believe that Kerr is madly in love with Grant, has left her fiancée for him and is planning the rest of their lives together. But instead of simply contacting the man and explaining that she involuntarily missed their rendezvous as she was involved in an accident, she effectively dumps him instantly by hiding away and resolving never to see him again. This leaves poor Grant bereft and roaming aimlessly around the world, unable to get over her. This hopelessly unrealistic plot device is used to contrive the supposed "romantic" tone of the second half, but ironically is actually one of the most callous acts of wanton cruelty ever filmed. Added to this are serious missteps in pacing, including - most bizarrely - musical interludes involving some toothy kids who seem to have wandered on set from a different movie. Very weird! The two leads are flawless throughout, but can't quite save it.

First half was charming. Second half was dead. Energy between the two characters was eons more interesting than their individual journeys. Surprised that I enjoyed this romance piece for as long as I did, disappointed that it let me down.
