After Love Reviews

This film had real potential and a distinctive voice that certainly deserves to be heard by a large audience. There are individual aspects that I really love about this film, but I just wish the story connected with me more.

Astute drama.

| Original Score: B | Aug 15, 2023

When it’s over, you come away feeling a little better about people and this sad, hopeful world in which we live.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jun 23, 2023

From BAFTA-nominated director Aleem Khan, and BAFTA-winning actress Joanna Scanlan, this visceral exploration of grief offers one of the most honest and generous representations of middle-aged womanhood in recent memory.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Feb 23, 2023

It’s a mature story, and with maturity comes a subtlety that goes beyond exposition.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Feb 14, 2023

A miraculous study of grief, jealousy and ultimately compassion, all executed with very little dialogue.

| Jan 31, 2023

After Love, serviceably directed but only marginally engrossing, feels too much like a long wait for a heavy hammer to fall.

| Jan 28, 2023

After Love is a universal story of what we would do after a loved one leaves us, and it may leave you feeling grateful for the ones that are still here.

| Jan 27, 2023

Writer/director Aleem Khan has a gift for telling visual details.

| Original Score: 3.5/4 | Jan 25, 2023

While much more somber in tone, After Love shares When You Finish's ability to pull a satisfying, conciliatory close out of discordant character dynamics.

| Jan 23, 2023

A Quietly Devastating Slow Burn On What It Really Means To Belong.

| Original Score: 8/10 | Jan 21, 2023

After Love feels a bit undercooked in its final stretch... The resolution following the inevitable confrontation lacks some potency in part because it lands better in concept than in execution.

| Jan 20, 2023

... explores its weighty themes with understated potency, skillfully weaving a major third-act twist into the narrative in a way that avoids manipulation while enhancing the film’s humanity.

| Jan 20, 2023

Joanna Scanlan holds the camera with few words and much displayed emotional intensity.

| Original Score: B | Jan 20, 2023

I tend to chafe at films that would fall apart if only a single person uttered a single sentence. Yet Mr. Khan’s delicate, low-key humanism makes After Love affecting, if not quite spellbinding.

| Jan 19, 2023

Anchored by a nuanced turn from Scanlan that can hang with some of the best Italian Neorealist performances, the film ends up a beautiful, jagged exploration of the messy nature of being human.

| Original Score: B+ | Jan 19, 2023

Consider “After Love” a rarity; these days, a good adult drama — the kind whose power is premised on the intricacies and deceptions that shape our everyday relationships — is hard to come by.

| Jan 19, 2023

Every now and again, we’re treated with a fresh story from a first-time filmmaker gifted with the perfect actor to tell it.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 19, 2023

Only a truly affecting film about grief would leave a viewer wishing it weren’t over so soon.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Jan 18, 2023

Khan takes that familiar piece of his own history and expands it, using it to explore our sense of identity in relation to those around us with unexpected narrative twists and a profoundly moving conclusion. Joanna Scanlan...is exquisite
