Alex Strangelove Reviews

Jan 7, 2025

A very good movie. "Love Simon" does it better but theres one particular scene in this movie between him & his best friend when he comes out. I can never forget that scene because its so true to life. Solid movie.

It was your typical highschool movie ofc so that's already a low score but also annoyed me that the main character reminded me too much of myself otherwise it was cool.

What have I just watched?

Director Craig Johnson made THE SKELETON TWINS, one of my personal top 100 movies ever, so when I found out he directed this film, I made it a priority to check this out. And while it's certainly not in the league of his earlier effort, this is still a very enjoyable and appealing movie - if you liked LOVE, SIMON a couple years back, you are bound to find much to enjoy here. That being said, I found the film's tone a bit schizophrenic - going from a gross-out teenage sex comedy in one scene to an insightful and moving drama in the next. The three actors comprising the love triangle are all superb, particularly Weinstein, who absolutely shines in the end moments of this film and sells what could have been a mawkish and overly sentimental finale.

Even if the beats are predictable it feels honest, like Johnson is pulling from his own memories. It's also funny which is a bit of a relief.

i liked it. it fills the void that Love, Simon leaves, as I for some undefinable reason absolutely dislike Love, Simon.

I can't remember the last time I cringed this much watching a film. The dialogue is absolutely ridiculous, feels like a 40 year old's idea of what teenagers sound like.

This movie is probably one of the worst queer movies I've ever seen. It's filled with unrealistic acting, sure it's alright but I swear as a teenager none of these teens actually act like teens. This was definitely directed by a straight millennial. The way they portray gay love and sex and everything is so poor. And the way they mock other identities and the main characters are subtly homophobic and transphobic just sucks, its so transparent the opinion these people have on gender identity and labels. I'm a gay teenager and this honestly just sucks so bad. Maybe if you're straight and just wanna watch something gay go ahead but not this film, because it will definitely portray our community badly and give you the wrong idea. If you're queer and wanna watch a good, emotional, heartfelt movie that shows a beautiful growth and deep relationship this is definitely not it. This whole movie is just a gay guy in denial but not even in a good moving or emotional way, just in a corny, cringey and bad represented way. Like I can't even describe how much I hated this film. It barely even showed the two "love interests" in this movie and it was mostly just about him and his girlfriend that he wasn't even in love with. They could've easily made him bi, but they had to make him gay aswell? I get it's possible that gay guys think they like girls and end up not but his love for Claire seemed genuine except for the fact he couldn't have sex with her. Anyways if you think about watching this movie, please don't waste your time.

Tell me a film on Netflix better or more unpredictable than this!

I created an account in order to tell you how bad this movie was. Straight people must have made this movie because oh boy was it a train-wreck. I have wasted a good 2 hours of my life that I'll never get back on this shit show, for the love of god this is my last straw. Please can't we have one good LGBTQ+ movie that doesn't make me get hives from the second hand embarrassment. I'm having an allergic reaction to this horrible movie please get me some cream and bleach of my eyes. - Sincerely 2 gay kids who thought this movie was supposed to be good

Bi erasure. Alex was set up to be bi the entire movie and then they made him a gay character last minute? The subtle but existing biphobia ruined this movie for me.

yeah; this was fine. i don't love the teenage anst/growing up/finding yourself type stories. they're nice, don't get me wrong - as is this one - but just not a lot happens. there's a couple cute funny parts, but i found most of it to be kind of boring. didn't really hold my attention. but it wasn't bad.

A fresh, clever, insightful and mature coming of age comedy drama that handles teen sexuality and LGBT themes with care and respect, making it a entertaining, thoughtful, rewarding and satisfying viewing experience.

Alex Strangelove is not a coming out story. It's a bunch of characters being shitty to each other, with no kind of real insight into why they are behaving that way. Don't get me wrong, a coming out happens in this film; but the story itself isn't about that, it's about the end of a heterosexual relationship. If the film actually wanted to be about the lived gay experience instead of the external consequences of that experience on straight people, it really needed Alex to be an actual point of view character. It's hand waved away at the end that Alex was supposed to be going through some sort of internal struggle, that led him to finally accepting that he's gay; but we don't see or feel that through the film, he could be struggling with any number of things related to his sexuality for any number of reasons for all the audience knows. Then, poof! He's gay. It's insulting to the premise to say the least. Maybe this could have been saved if the film was that much fun to watch otherwise, but it isn't really. It's very trite and by the book in a lot of ways. The same scenes teen comedy and drama scenes, with the same teen drama characters, with just enough changed that it's not something that you haven't seen exactly somewhere else before. It's fine, but not interesting enough to make up for the failed concept.

A romantic comedy in which, Alex, high school class president, nerd and a straight A student, has been dating a girl a long time. They decide to sleep together but then he meets a gay guy and he's confused about his own sexuality. Some of its scenes are really funny and it's a beautiful and sweet movie about coming to terms with your own sexuality. I'm sure this is the case for many of us and it couldn't be better represented than in this movie. There should be more movies like this one.
