Ali Reviews
A slow burn but a really good movie. Will Smith is brilliant as Ali
Once again they make a real story boring. I know this is not a documentary, but there is more actual interesting footage from Ali than what is shown in this picture.
A great cinematic portrait of a legendary athlete, maybe one of best acting performances by Will Smith.
What is with the long winded irrelevant singing at the start of the movie ? Followed by a long winded fighting scene with no context. Absolutely hated it. Badly directed, badly acted, disappointing rendition of a man who had a very interesting life. All we seen was hollywierd hype.
Leave it to Michael Mann to craft such an audacious, offbeat, and occasionally frustrating portrayal of Muhammad Ali. I get why it has a reputation for mostly disappointing people but I like that the movie defies convention both in narrative and style. In regards to Smith, he's best when playing Ali's charismatic and transgressive public persona while he falls flat in scenes that require more nuance. With stronger central performance, this might have been a masterpiece.
Movie was trying to glorify a coward. Poor quality movie.
A Will Smith in one of his most mature roles, in the shoes of the iconic and controversial champion. The script is done in such a way that it avoids the cliches of biographies or boxing dramas, which is appreciated. There are elements that seem redundant but at least they are not a drag.
Não honra a história de Muhammad Ali
The movie seemed to be pulling in too many different ways. One side wanted to be a piece on Ali, another on the civil rights movement, and another two going two other ways that I couldn't tell. The story did not flow as well as it should have.
If even though the bio is questionable, it's without a doubt one of Will Smith's best performances.
The story of Muhammad Ali is a fascinating one and I love Michael Mann movies, but this biopic is just not presented in much of an interesting way. The acting from Will Smith is fine as is Jamie Foxx and Jon Voight, but this feels pretty flat. Even the boxing scenes weren't all that riveting. I had watched this years ago and wasn't too fond of it. Was hoping this revisit might change my opinion. It didn't.
Excellent👌reenactment of the Foreman fight down to the collapse after the final bell rings'/!!!
Great cast and great fight choreography. It's also a great period piece.
Entertaining enough to watch. The boxing felt more real than Rocky which was good. But the story kind of jerked itself through Ali’s life focusing on certain highlights without ever fully diving into the historical significance of the moment. For example, you don’t really get an idea of what it meant for him to not go to Vietnam and have the nation turn against him.
Will Smith delivers a knock-out punch as Ali in this good film that follows Ali from his first heavyweight title to the "Rumble in the Jungle." Smith captures Ali's Kentucky drawl. Like his fighting style, it can float like a butterfly and sting like a bee. Director Michael Mann strikes the right balance between personal and political, setting Ali's struggles in context of the era but never losing sight of the personal nature of the story. Even limited to 10 years of Ali's life, the story spills out of the screen, with brief glimpses of some key characters in his life. This is a double loss because these small roles are being played by brilliant and under used actors such as Jeffrey Wright, LeVar Burton, Joe Morton, and Giancarlo Esposito. Jon Voight struggles under far too much makeup but gives a good effort as Howard Cosell. Mario Van Peebles is quietly magnetic as Malcolm X, and Ron Silver marshals his intensity as his trainer. Mykelti Williamson is entertaining as Don King.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one, partially because I had chosen to watch an Ali documentary before watching this biopic with Will portraying him. Doing so made his performance more impressive as it's more obvious how accurately he adopted Ali's real speech patterns, gait and general boxing strategy; Voight's performance was impressive too. I would've preferred there be more attention paid to the leadup to his matches, but that's a minor complaint because they had a healthy running time and filled it with intriguing subject matter regardless. Kudos!
I remembered how disappointed I was
