Alice Reviews

For all its flaws, though, Alice is consistently interesting, and Palmer has a lot to do with that, carrying the film with grace and simplicity in a part that could conceivably finished another actor altogether.

| Sep 16, 2023

Alice‘s scattershot screenplay causes storytelling stumbles here or there, but Keke Palmer’s persistently persuasive lead performance (somewhat) steadies the ship.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Sep 1, 2022

A movie chock-full of squandered potential.

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Aug 16, 2022

This film should be so empowering, but it falls flat.

| Original Score: 4/10 | Jun 27, 2022

Even with her stellar performance by Keke Palmer leading the way, Alice is a mixed bag that tries and fails to marry two disparate elements of the African-American experience in a satisfyingly cinematic package.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jun 5, 2022

The script touches upon many historical themes quickly and with subtlety, so you better be paying attention, or you'll miss them.

| Apr 18, 2022

It's kick-ass and kind of funny, but real serious.

| Mar 30, 2022

Based on the wild true story of Black Americans who were still enslaved as late as 1963, this is a surprisingly good film.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 25, 2022

The acting from lead Keke Palmer is powerful and on point. She plays Alice as a woman hurt and abused who finds her power and voice in a way that changes things no only for herself.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 25, 2022

Alice doesn’t seem to be in on its own joke. Well enough made technically but increasingly ridiculous, it takes itself all too seriously.

| Mar 21, 2022

Alice is a drama written and directed by Krystin Ver Linden and is her feature debut which is also executive produced by Keke Palmer.

| Mar 19, 2022

It’s a film that works well, provided the viewer lets the story set the tone without inflexible expectations.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 18, 2022

It’s a satisfying ride, although it does skip lightly over a few questions.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 18, 2022

Alice is so skittishly afraid to offend that it borders on parody.

| Original Score: 0/4 | Mar 18, 2022

Its bewildering what Krystin Ver Linden considers essential to this narrative, squandering the entire concept on an hour of nothing and misfiring on what should be the juicy part

| Original Score: 1.5/5 | Mar 18, 2022

While Ver Linden’s ideas never quite coalesce, “Alice” is at least consistently challenging.

| Mar 18, 2022

As a film bringing all these elements together into one succinct piece that carries both the weight of its concept and the panache of its stylistic forebears, it falls short.

| Mar 17, 2022

The film is surprisingly slack and unfortunately unsatisfying, despite a noble vision for the black experience that Ver Linden is trying to communicate.

| Original Score: C | Mar 17, 2022

Critical race theory on steroids - and the best action hero so far this year. In other words, Right On. As for Common, Keke Palmer's trucker guiding light in this rebel road movie connecting slavery to working class oppression today - Keep on Truckin'.

| Mar 17, 2022

Ver Linden's screenplay ... rushes through the far more intriguing character and political elements that are right there, waiting to be explored and examined.
