Aline Reviews

Aline is a biopic freely inspired by the life of Celine Dion that’s, in most cases, on the brink of becoming an intentional farce.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 24, 2024

Aline is the Goldschläger of musical biopics: unappetizing and decadent in all the wrong ways, but too absurd to not sample once.

| Dec 16, 2022

Aline is a conundrum and a contradiction. More than any other recent biopic, Aline soldiers through all of the cliches and plot devices we’ve seen repeated ad nauseum. Yet, there’s a bizarre core that spins every scene on the axis.

| Original Score: C | Nov 28, 2022

A film of questionable quality, full of inexplicable creative decisions, that is in such a hurry to tell so many things in a limited time, that it never gets to delve into the psychology of its main character. Full review in Spanish.

| Original Score: 1/5 | Jun 22, 2022

Aline is less of a Céline Dion tribute and more of a mishandled vanity project from director/writer/star Valérie Lemercier. Very few middle-aged people can convincingly depict a pre-teen child on camera. Unfortunately, Lemercier is not one of them.

The current The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is better about fame, and certainly more entertaining.

A masterpiece? No. A Céline Dion biopic? Sort of. A vision you could never anticipate and may never see again? Completely.

| Apr 25, 2022

Like all good ghosts, Aline gains depth by what it doesnt say and, in this curious case, whats forbidden to say.

There are no insights here, only lavishly budgeted cosplay.

Despite some wonky CGI, this "fictional biopic" about singer Celine Dion is an engaging tribute that mostly hits the right notes.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Apr 20, 2022

Initially strange, then mildly amusing, and eventually just kind of whatever, Francophone musical success story Aline is the very definition of neither one thing nor the other.

| Apr 19, 2022

It eventually becomes the standard biopic.

| Apr 19, 2022

There's a lot of affection in this portrayal... I wish it had stuck with the strength of its initial weird convictions throughout, though.

| Apr 19, 2022

Lemerciers performance shows how completely she embraces Celine Dion, as a performer and an icon.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Apr 17, 2022

Aline tries to have its cake and eat it, waving off assertions of its biopic origins, yet formulaically behaving like one.

| Original Score: 5/10 | Apr 16, 2022

The weirdest thing about "Aline" is how ordinary and tame it is, a fawning biopic that has no perspective or insight on its subject other than that CelineAline is really great.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Apr 15, 2022

A tender portrait of a superstar...in its very peculiarity, it emphasizes the freakishness of outsize talent and fame, and calls attention to the folly, the ludicrousness of the biopic itselfof trying to make coherent a life that is far from ordinary.

Its shocking stuff and quite hilarious to just laugh at the ridiculousness of it all. I dont think thats what Valerie Lemercier had in mind. But thats the way it is.

| Original Score: 1.5/4 | Apr 15, 2022

The shot-for-shot life of Celine Dion is done with a strange exactness that kept me wondering after I got over the 12-year old version of Lemercier why the pop star refused her support for the movie.

| Original Score: B- | Apr 15, 2022

The whole name thing is just a below-the-line technicality in relation to the grand weirdness Lemercier serves up in paying tribute to the French-Canadian pop goddess.
