All the Bright Places Reviews

And while the movie carries some of the lightweight genre appeal you would expect, “All the Bright Places” deserves credit for not just having serious intentions, but actually showing them on the screen.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Aug 19, 2022

Although [it] won't be an easy film to watch for people who are triggered by the same issues that the movie's teen characters are coping with, the intention is to help bring awareness to these issues so that people can get and give help in real life.

Ultimately, Violet and Finch never attain a living, breathing quality that moves beyond the page on which they were conceived, and that, my friends, is dark stuff indeed.

| Original Score: 4.5/10 | Jan 29, 2021

This film romanticizes suicide. It does everything studies have shown causes suicide rates in teens to increase. Justice Smith proves he is an acting force we will see for years to come. Hopefully, in less potentially destructive films.

| Original Score: 1 | May 10, 2020

To have a sincere exploration of mental illness and suicide, you cannot use them as devices to enhance the tragic nature of a central romance. Sadly, that's exactly what this film does.

The protagonists' good performances save [Jennifer Niven's novel]. [Full review in Spanish]

In some moments it may look somewhat superficial, but never... annoying. [Full Review in Spanish]

Two struggling teens with mental health and suicidal issues find reasons to get together leading to a weepie third act.

| Original Score: C+ | Mar 13, 2020

All the Bright Places sets a dark pace and doesn't let up.

| Mar 13, 2020

All the Bright Places [isn't] a particularly good or an original movie, but it is an effective one, and while the film is dotted with red flags, it's message is ultimately hopeful and the ending is more bittersweet than sad.

| Mar 10, 2020

Given that the book does give us insight into Finch's pain and the ways in which he tries to cope, it's unfortunate that the film, which was co-written by Nevin and Liz Hannah doesn't offer the same experience.

| Mar 10, 2020

The movie misses the enchanting nature of Niven's original words, a disappointment that's made worse by the author's role in creating it.

| Mar 10, 2020

All The Bright Places is tender, beautiful, and thoughtful, but Finch's story felt bereft of what made it so great in the original novel.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 10, 2020

What I loved about All the Bright Places was that it showed two people who were still depressed despite their happiness. It's a realistic take on mental illness, and one that doesn't try to solve the problem.

| Original Score: 3.5/5 | Mar 10, 2020

Fans of the book may miss the back-and-forth of two narratives (Violet's and Finch's voices) telling the story, but director Brett Haley does a solid job of balancing the film's points of view.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 10, 2020

YA cliches converge in All the Bright Places, a tragic teen romance that tries very hard to tug at your heartstrings but fails to make much of an impact.

| Mar 9, 2020

All The Bright Places reaches into the gray areas of love, loss and mental illness in such profound, yet subtle ways.

| Original Score: 4/5 | Mar 6, 2020

While [All the Bright Places] remains sensitive towards its heavy themes of mental-illness and suicide, it also ends up being a little problematic in it's road to closure.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Mar 4, 2020

'All the Bright Places' impressed me with its honesty, compassion, and sensitive performances by Elle Fanning and Justice Smith, who project amazing chemistry together on screen.

| Mar 4, 2020

In a world full of inexplicable book-to-film adaptations, All the Bright Places is a diamond in the rough.

| Original Score: 7/10 | Mar 3, 2020
