All the Old Knives Reviews
Totally disappointing. A stellar cast have assembled and no one has a script. If this is the level of intelligence of our international espionage agents, then no wonder everyone died on the plane.
The easiest way to describe this movie is...what if they tried to make "My Dinner with Andre" an action movie? This movie has one action scene that they then try to flashback to it from every possible angle. The parts that aren't in flashback are all just two people talking at a dinner table. If I was told this movie had a 5-million-dollar budget, I would ask what they did with the other 4 million dollars. The whole thing takes place in a grand total of 5 locations. Low budget does not necessarily mean low quality. But this one is. It is low quality directing, editing and writing. It is good with acting, but that is about it. It is a good thing I wrote this review the same day I watched the movie, because I would not remember anything about this movie by tomorrow. I guess that's the good news.
Loved the twists and turns and character driven plot. It was a pleasant change from too much non-stop violence and shallow characterizations of many movies. A thinking person's flick.
Super fun interesting storyline. Excellent chemistry. Very good acting. This is truly a thinking person's espionage film that has twists upon twists. Highly recommend it
The film moves back and forth in time in a way that makes it difficult to follow. It’s too much of a downer. The soundtrack is a bit relentless and repetitious.
Didnt know what to expect with this movie and clearly didnt expect the ending. Pay attention. Very good storyline and execution
The director was striving for tight economical dialogue but overcranked it. The interactions between characters felt unnatural, making the characters themselves come across as generic. It was far too artificial for me and distracted from the story, which I gave up on. Especially as it started careening into a pile of 90s cliches.
The typical fiction of a Fox News audience. Hilarious to even think that any of the so "terrorist groups" are related to each other, or even that "Tehran" is the one these groups go to. Yes, fiction but still a laughable matter. Olen Steinhauer, along with Jauns Metz, who didn't even bother to do a simple Google search on the topic, are Islamophobes who thinks Muslims just meet at the mosque to plan their next terrorist attack. Terrible movie. Highly won't recommend. Waste of time.
Intriguing well made film. For those people who under rate this type of film only because it doesn’t suit their simplistic taste for fast cars, action etc you should be banned from being a critic.
Watchable characters (TN esp) deliver a spy tale with a Romeo and Juliet type of twist almost entirely over the dinner table in ‘wine country'. Enjoyed it.
Boring and slow and uninteresting. No real likable characters. It should have been a 1 hour show on regular television. Pass!
A good slow burn spy thriller, maybe a bit to slow for some. I enjoyed it a lot, there is twist and turn on the way but never really drops of the road. Both leading actors did an amazing job, and the chemistry is SO great between them. It doesn't overstay it's time For me personally did the ending not hold up to the rest of the movie, it's a bit to thin and far stretched, I don't really get to the point of understanding and feeling with the person. But the rest is just a solid good movie.
Had me tied to the screen the whole movie. Thoroughly enjoyed and although they were unsuccessful in tricking me about the outcome, I thought it was exceptionally enjoyable and would certainly recommend. It's slow, painful, and worth every minute of it.
Too thin to really work.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz...that's what this boring waste of time is. It has a decent cast w/Chris Pine and Thandiewie Newton and Jonathan Price, but the story stinks and there is zero action to move the story forward. Grab a blankie and get ready to snooze.
Fun movie with a twist at the end. Solid choice for an evening of mindless entertainment (and that's meant as a compliment).
After watching the movie, my very first thought was, "the critics are going to LOVE this movie... The rest of us humans will be, 'meh'." 70% and 40% respectively was my guess. Came to RT, was pretty close. Too much flash back, then forward, then back, without anything too riveting or with any change of pace. None of the characters fully fleshed out, many important ones just popped onto the scene in the last quarter of the movie. Good acting for the most part, okay cinematography, C- directing and writing. just mho.
This is the best movie I have seen for the last 20 years
I have absolutely no idea why people are giving this movie bad reviews. My wife is a harsh critic of movies and she LOVED it. Whenever you think you have the movie figured out, it throws you off again, and you have to start from scratch trying to figure out who's the bad actor. You won't be disappointed. You can thank me later.
All the Old Knives isn't the most original or ground-breaking spy thriller, but it's still a good watch.
