American Honey Reviews

Apr 4, 2025

A long boring movie with not much of a story line. Not a movie for young adults. Frontal male nudity, intercourse, drinking and drug use. Didn't see what critic's saw in it. More of a Fart than Art...

This is the most unwholesome, filthy-in-the-literal-sense movie I’ve ever watched. → For one thing, there’s this weird cinematographic technique where for about half the screen time, Sasha Lane’s face takes up half or more the screen. I have no idea what this achieves, but then maybe I’m not good at appreciating cinematographic art. → There isn’t a plot; this is apparently being celebrated (“it’s not supposed to go anywhere! It’s just how things are!”)—but I’m sure there are plenty of folks who won’t find it worth two and a half hours to just see things happening. The real problem, though, is that except for the main character (Star), the characters are *all* unwholesome. They happen to be poor and/or uneducated, which shouldn’t be a problem at all — but they’re just not good people! Some look like born-again druggies. Krystal is a characterless thief. Jake is a heartless lecher. There’s not *one* character who is good-hearted, or strong as a person, or friendly, or likeable, or... anything Good under the sun! Except for Star, the characters just form a bunch of bad persons. Not the kind of bad person who’ll knife you for $20; worse, the kind of bad person you wouldn’t want as a friend.

Sasha Lane is a revelation

My whole rating is because of the ending. The movie is 2 HR 44 MIN. Even though it has a Kevin Costnor run time it keeps you interested but then it ends. It answer no questions, no character arcs are finished, the story goes nowhere. So the ending ruins the movie. This is one movie I say don’t waste the time to watch it.

A study of lowlife American youths getting by, travelling, selling magazines, stealing, having sex. Movie was too long at 2H 32 mins and lacked an ending. Nothing special here.

shia carries this film with ease

Believe it was a Grateful Dead trip, the bus, (not spoiling the ending).

A movie about the youth's freedom. The ending might be ambiguous. Throughout the whole journey, it clearly shows how it likes to be genuinely free and young. It feels like watching another world, outside of competitive capitalism society.

I love, love, love this film. This film is absolutely Andrea Arnold at its finest, even though I absolutely love Fish Tank, as well. American Honey is one of the most beautiful, intense slice of life films I've ever seen. An absolute dreamy movie. However for the average viewer who doesn't like slice of life films, it might not be for you. The slice of life film is encapsulating something much deeper than plot - it is absolutely capturing the emotional essence of the American Dream on the fringes of society and wow, it did that on every level. Beautiful film.

The film remains compelling even when it's narrative seems to be spinning it's wheels. For something that could easily have been insufferable that's quite an achievement.

Would be a better movie if they edited out the hour and a half of it which is comprised purely of incoherently repetitive and out-of-focus shots of random scenery.

Good, but not great.

Amazing film about growing up on the fringes of late-teen society in America. Having been one of these young weirdos, I found the characters to be extraordinarily well-crafted. The acting was inspiring, especially for such young people, and the direction felt as natural as it gets.

One of my favourite movies about growing up in dystopian times.

This film didn't really appeal to me personally. It's a bit...meandering and I can't say I felt strongly about the main characters really. Star (the main character, a teen girl) seems a nice enough person behind the bravado I suppose but I can't say I felt especially gripped to see what happened next to her. There are some nice landscape shots and it does ok at showing things from the girls point of view but I suppose I was hoping for more of a stronger plotline. I also found it a bit hard to follow some of the dialogue at times, as it was a bit muffled. I can sort of see what the filmmakers were trying to do and I thought I'd watch it as it has a decent average rate on IMDB but I don't think I'm someone particularly keen on these somewhat aimless coming of age road trip type films. Shia LaBeouf gave quite a good performance and I suppose it did seem fairly genuine with the slightly wobbly camerawork somehow adding to the authenticity. It features quite a few songs - contemporary hip hop and R&B mostly. It's a gritty watch and its fairly depressing in tone but it's ok. I'm not sure I can say much more. I suppose the camerawork may be seen as a bit disorientating at times but then I suppose that's what the filmmakers were going for, in a way. I wouldn't particularly recommend it as such, no.

Pointless. Teenager's bullshit

So many emotional twists and turns and a whole lot of nostalgia. I love this movie.

This is a completely pointless, meandering & repetitive film that ultimately goes nowhere. It runs at a coma-inducing length of almost 3 hours, yet this still wasn't long enough for any kind of discernable or meaningful storyline to be developed. The movie ends abruptly and without a semblance of closure. More effective than a handful of valium.

The movie appears fine and well done but the characters and society in general... what a stupid fucking mess. I don't think I've ever been as conflicted reviewing a movie as I was reviewing this. I like how it was shot and how it looks and the story seems okay in general... but I don't like the characters at all. The acting was fine, I simply don't like them or their role. I didn't think it was going to be about a roving band of degenerate magazine salespeople. I found this to be an incredibly annoying movie that I could not wait for it to be done BUT... unlike most movies I find annoying and can't wait for them to be done, this does have a certain quality and uniqueness to it that some may call ‘charm' though I wouldn't call it ‘charm' because there's nothing charming about the characters. I can acknowledge their plight but I can't call it ‘charming' no matter how many sing-a-longs they do. I don't like sing-a-longs, that may be my biggest problem with the characters and this movie. I wanted to score it a lot lower, I really did, but it's just too much of a unique quality to dismiss it as something subpar and it doesn't seem quite fitting of 2 1/2 so I guess it's a 3 from me... for now. Though I am concerned that it may be some sort of cult recruitment video but that's another viewing perhaps. It really is unique because - I don't hate it but I never want to see it ever again.
