The American President Reviews
This movie influenced me in many ways for years. I’ve been a member of the ACLU because of it. I just watched it again and the story holds up and maybe has some hints as to what going on now.
"The American President" feels like it was made in the 1950's. There is something Norman Rockwell Esque regarding the story and directing. I liked it. Rating: 8/10
Enjoy the first half of this movie. The notion of a president who needs a date to his political functions is funny and interesting. Annette Benning is wonderful and a good actress. The second half of the movie is just Sorkin's politics and I'm not a fan.
Different kind of presidential movie - nice love story
This film was even worse than I remembered.
Aaron Sorkin is one of the best screenwriters of all time. His dialogue is sharp but also subtle. He is able to create characters that are human, while simultaneously elevating them to a position of power. Quippy, throwaway lines in the first act carry to the end and are delivered with a punch. I wanted more time with the President's staff, which is probably why "The West Wing" was greenlit. The relationships and dichotomy between the President and each character was captivating, especially with Sydney. The score is powerful, the setting is elegant, and the story is seamless. Intention and obstacle are at the forefront the entire film and I loved every minute of it. Best Character: Sydney Ellen Wade Best Quote: "My name is Andrew Shepherd and I am the President." Best Scene: Drink the Sand. Best Piece of Score: "The American President" Additional Note: I wonder what it would be like to have a President like Andrew Shepherd.
Nicely shot romantic comedy of middle-aged-man. maybe unrealistic but enjoyable. I expected a bit more political drama part.
This movie started out extremely great. There were some awkward moments but the plot was amazing. I was completely invested in the movie the entire time up until the end. The ending ruined it all because it ended on a cliffhanger. I didn't even get to know if he won the election or not. They didn't even make a sequel! What if they had children or got married? I will never know. This made me extremely upset and is the sole reason why I am giving this a 1. I have to live in pain forever.
A now anachronistic look at the president and his relation to the public. If you're younger than 20, you may not believe the presidency was ever this revered!
Combining Aaron Sorkin’s smart writing with Rob Reiner tender direction and powerful performances from it’s cast, The American President is great reflection of 1990’s politics that may also be relevant today.
Plus another 1/2 star. Essential viewing if you are a fan of the West Wing Series -- this is the precursor. Humorous and will intentioned, if stilted writing with a narrow point of view. Featured here are rather good characters charmingly brought forth in a surprising foreshadowing of the above mentioned 온라인카지노추천 program.
Very good chemistry between the actors, some very nice jokes, a good underlying critique of media, usual charisma of Michael Douglas and the sheer beauty of Annette Benning... What else you can look for..
This is my "go to, happy place" movie. It reflects a clean love story with great writing, great acting, great directing, & a representation of a real president possibility. It also reminds me of a time before we had to use area codes when dialing local phone numbers.
This is a terrible movie. Is it a comedy, no there are no funny parts. Is it a romance, no the romantic scenes are cliché at best. This is a movie for stupid people who want to feel smart by watching a movie about presidential policy and like bad movies with good actors.
In a time when shmaltzy rom-coms were so second-nature that one of the most politically astute modern screenwriters included one here, The American President delivers the political payload and human storytelling that should be expected.
The American President is just another propaganda piece that makes politics look like a walk in the park during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Reiner is worthless.
A heartwarming political romance, combined with Reiner's direction, Sorkin's script, the performances of the cast, Shaiman's score, Seale's cinematography, Leighton's editing, Kilvert's production design, O'Hara's set decoration, Gresham's costume design, production values and emotional weight, The American President tells a story that makes the heart feel as warm as it possibly can!!!
"The American President" is a warm romantic comedy with smart dialogue, all around great performances, and a real authentic feel for the White House in the 1990s. While some viewers may not care for the fictional President's liberal-leaning policies, the film is intriguing because it uses real issues instead of manufactured ones.
A very watchable movie that has some really nice moments, and strong lead performances from Douglas and Benning. The sort of film to fall back on and watch again.
I expected it to be a bit deeper and more effecting.
