An American Tail Reviews

Dec 19, 2024

I've watched this movie twice and I just could never get around it. It was just too boring for me. Not good, but not bad!

"An American Tail" marks the rise of power of Don Bluth. He had made other great animated properties before this, but this was the first one that was both a critical and box office success. Teaming up with Spielberg, this film over doubled the box office take of Disney's own animated film that came out the same year. It would then go on to get an Oscar nomination and win the Grammy for Song of the Year. But putting aside its historical context, how is the film itself? It is really REALLY good. I understand that there is definitely a nostalgic bias in this review. I grew up watching and loving this film. Though as a kid, I actually preferred its sequel. But revisiting it now, I can see that this original is the superior flick. The story is quite simple, a child is separated from his family and he wants to reunite with them. A straightforward narrative, and instantly understandable for viewers of all ages. What makes the story work is the likability and believability of our main cast of characters. Fievel feels like a real kid, he is sweet, but at times troublesome. And this poor kid goes through the absolute ringer. The trials and conflicts Fievel endure is what helps the story remain memorable and powerful. The more problems our hero has to overcome, the more we as the audience root for him to succeed. Along with the beautiful animation of Bluth, the music of James Horner has to be highlighted. The music is always great, and 75% of the songs are all-time classics. "Duo" was never a favorite of mine. But that is cancelled out by how much of a showstopper "Somewhere Out There" is. It is one of the sweetest and heart filled songs I've ever heard. The fact that the two people singing it don't sound like pros, make it all the more endearing. The whole movie hits hard with the feels and never fails to land emotionally. For those who say they would never cry in a movie... never say never.

Considero Que Es Una Película Bastante Buena, Aún Cuándo Nunca La Había Visto de Niño, La Película Me Gusta, Su Animación Es Fenomenal, Su Banda Sonora Es Buenarda, Los Personajes La Mayoría Tienen Un Desarrollo Bastante Bueno, Excepto El De Warren Que Como Villano Deja Mucho Que Desear Y No Se Siente Tanto Como Una Amenaza. Buena Película.

Not just an American tale which shows how immigration was like back in the late 80s, but also an American tail of a little kid mouse looking for his family while going through the dangers in his own eyes. A few cheesy parts here yet always good for the kids especially if you're someone like me who grew up with this movie. 9/10.

When I was a kid, An American Tail was my favourite Don Bluth film. Since I've got the VHS of it years ago and now I gone of it and 11 years ago I've come across a website called YouTube where you can videos from it and no I didn't watch it on it. I've watched it a few years later. I was watching one of the Donald Duck cartoons. But now I watched it and remember everything about it, it still grown on me. It tells the story of Fievel Mousekewitz and his family as they emigrate from the Imperial Russian territory of Ukraine to the United States for freedom. However, he gets lost and must find a way to reunite with them. Yeah, I remember it being cute at the time and I find all the characters cute like Fievel. He's the only one who has to find his family and not get eaten by cats. I remember all the characters. In fact I do remember that Tiger played by Dom DeLuise who didn't get enough screen time. He was there being friends with Fievel and then Fievel escapes from the cats. Tiger hates killing mice, he likes them. The animation is the same and you can tell it's Don Bluth. The music is great and it's composed by James Horner who composes many films in the generation such as 48 Hrs., Commando, Aliens, The Land Before Time which is a Don Bluth film, Braveheart and Titanic. I listen to the soundtrack every time I'm in a mood. The songs are catchy and everytime a song comes on they'll always come in your head like "There Are No Cats in America", "Never Say Never", "Somewhere Out There" and "A Duo". To me I love the song "Somewhere Out There" that Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram sings. The song is so beautiful I can't believe what I just witnessed. I love the music, I love the tune from it and I prefer this song than the one Fievel and Tanya sings. Hell, I even remember that song which somebody or two sung in Britain's Got Talent and that's really something. The ending is so beautiful you knew that Fievel has found his family and being reunited and it always gets you in the way that will make you cry and happy at the same time. Okay so that's took care of An American Tail and it's been awhile since years back. I know that a lot of people that don't really like this movie but when it comes The Secret of NIMH, An American Tail will always get you in the token of appreciation.

Dark and unfair to Fievel, but in the end, the harshness was very well worth it

This is a surprisingly delightful yet informative movie that kicked off a ten assignment and took care of kids when Disney couldn't.

This, 11/11/2020. It is not true. I do not (pardon me) have a book to refer you to, if you are interested, in the experience of people fleeing persecution, coming to America for refuge. We follow the family (of mice) (animated) who (see above) are then separated, the oldest male child, during the voyage. Shenanigans, caricature in Gotham?/early state New York. The metaphor is used, cat for persecution, mouse for running scared... until the third act sees this turned on its head- a mighty mouse (different cartoon) scares off the cats; the mice ride the back of a tame cat like a donkey. Friendship is possible. 1 "A stereotype , is a short-cut." and overall, one must let a person, be their self. 2 Music: I thought it was good- meaning well played- it's the LSO. Recycles ET. Costume: care taken. 3 Script: I listened in Norwegian? didn't get too caught up in the words. Technical: very good indeed. I have it as a litmus, whether or not an animator can make a credible effort at water. This company can. Or could. Stage of the life cycle: meaning... is this a child's boast , or an adult's confession... It's unclear, the question. Life was hard in Odessa, but we had each other. Parent tells a child not to worry. That sort of thing. Ta.
