Amy Reviews

Mar 6, 2025

A touching and authentic story that captivates from beginning to end, leaving no room for boredom. The documentary presents powerful accounts of the artist’s life, conveyed clearly and engagingly. It’s a deeply moving film that portrays the journey of an extraordinary talent who, despite struggles and decline over time, always radiated love and happiness. Rest in peace, Amy Winehouse. ❤️‍🩹

good film great documentary and interviews its just really really sad that drugs and alcohol ruined amy winehouse and the fact that she could not get help for her problems great movie just sad that this was the result i wish she was still alive and still making music…..

This is a very well made documentary. I felt like Amy was troubled long before fame came along and her parents literally ignored her calls for help. She told her mother that she had started a new diet (I.e., bulimia) and her mother did nothing. Bulimia was one of the things that killed her. I think she was always calling for help in the largest way. Perhaps her karmic lesson was that you have to want to save yourself (with the help of trusted professionals).

"Amy" is a fascinating and ultimately devastating documentary. Right now the discourse online I have noticed is that the Amy Winehouse biopic is necessary since this already great documentary exists. I would actually argue that if done tastefully, a biopic could be a very impactful experience and this story definitely has all of the pieces to tell something profound and moving. The way this doc uses archive footage and audio to tell a story is really impressive. I didn't know much about Winehouse before watching this outside of some high-level things, and this movie made me feel like I got to get to know her over the course of it. Overall, it is one of many cautionary tales from this world and a very well-made documentary that is engaging and a memorable experience despite being tough to watch at times.

A poor storyline that did not spark admiration for Amy's story in the way that we admire her music.

When thinking about what could have made this movie better, there was one resounding thought: "Not much." The film is an intimate review of a sorely misunderstood talent. Evocative, playful, heartwrenching, and - perhaps most importantly - true.

The best documentary movie ever made!

The Best Documentary of one of my and I think the worlds Artists. Absolutely Devastating. Left you feeling sad that we as a culture didn't do more to help this creative Genius. instead we shamed her. Watching how she slowly joined the 27's club is somehow Iconic yet very Sad. one of the best Modern Jazz singers loyal to her art and who she is iconic to a whole Generation who really just needed a hand but all of those close to her didnt give one.

A great documentary about a great singer. More than a shallow look.

Once again, through the course of this, the media and paparazzi prove they are the scum of the world. This archival biopic does not glamorize or over sensationalize anything, so it's kinda like a funeral because you know the outcome - sad and depressing.

A well crafted, tragic story.

Raw look at the darker sides of fame sadly explored through one of the most uniquely talented vocalists from this century.

This review may contain some mild spoilers if you are unfamiliar with Amy Winehouse and her life... I watched the documentary without much prior knowledge beyond what any other layperson would likely know. The first hour or so was challenging and torturous at times as it mainly focused on her formative years and her agonizing, toxic relationship with Blake whatshisname. As the documentary progresses it explores in more depth the trappings of fame, celebrity and dependence. And, specifically, how this can destroy an artist who was as talented as she was vulnerable. Some friends tried to help her, but it seems the window of opportunity, if it ever existed, was lost by this time. In terms of her work as an artist, I think she is best described in someone else's words... "What the really great artists do is they're entirely themselves. They're entirely themselves, they've got their own vision, they have their own way of fracturing reality, and if it's authentic and true, you will feel it in your nerve endings." Quite tragic and heartbreaking, this is an excellent watch. For all the challenging scenes and footage, there is a moment of joy when Tony Bennett awards Amy a Grammy. It is only in this fleeting moment that Amy seems complete and free of suffering.

Pretty interesting documentary about the one and only Amy Winehouse. Before this I didn't know a lot about Amy Winehouse and now I do and man I feel bad for her. Her dad kept taking money from her and just her surroundings were bad. Theirs nothing wrong about this documentary but I'm not the biggest fan so of course I'm not going to give this 4 or 5 stars. But I did start listening to her music and man she's amazing. And the meaning behind her songs is sad but great at the same time. I recommend this documentary to anybody that likes music.

Amy Winehouse's music may not meet much of a musical interest for different taste fulfillment of those compellingly drawn towards this documentary outside of the loyal fanbase which would leave you disconnected from her late reputable talent like typical alienation. The only emotional resonance that would connect is the sympathetically structured revelation of her humane heart before drugged and drunk into struggles shamefully due to fame corrupting a girl's innocence – in a way of her self-destruction paralleling Judy Garland's forced destruction. This documentary really honor her in memory by producing a cohesive narrative, and psychoanalysis, over her life and times till her saddening downfall that addresses the substantial danger when blowing up life towards a dream that would easily negatively influence you when surrounded by accomplished fame, and Amy's innocence invited unfortunate curiosity. Even when alienated, her story indeed garners resonance in sympathy, and how the documentary was brought together and contributed succeeded that needed effect, which leads into a given fair rating. (B+)

It's very rarely that I will give a documentary five stars but this is a stunning picture. It's savagely tragic and heart rending. What a talent and character Amy Winehouse was and her descent is pictured perfectly. I was the same age and watching the videos of her before she was famous remind me of my own youth and it is a reminder of what an ordinary girl she was. Those were fun times to be partying in London. I think that's why I connected with this film so much, it feels contemporary to me, I feel like I met that girl at multiple house parties and on nights out. She feels weirdly familiar, so magnified but do normal at the same time. It makes her vulnerability so relatable and that is what feels so cutting in the film. Her fall was sad and captured so well here, with the brief glimpses of hope that she'll pull through followed by the tumult of her inevitable collapse back into a lost world, trapped by a fame she never wanted but couldn't escape. It's a very powerful movie and far more so than the director's other acclaimed documentary about Senna. This one grabs you more because her life and troubles were that much larger. Her talent for lyrics is excellently portrayed in the film by sub titling the songs and bringing the creative writing to the fore. It's probably lost amongst most of us who listen to her catchy songs, without really searching for the meaning in the words. I've only seen a couple of superior docs tbh.

I went from having absolutely no clue who the hell 'Amy Winehouse' was to having viscerally experienced her life myself.
