Anaconda Reviews

Anaconda brandishes its goofiness like a sword, ready to cut down any naysayer who dares utter a derogatory word. Certainly, the daftness is part of the film’s charm, but it can never rise much above the level of a disposable lark.

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Mar 2, 2024

...a cult monster movie, stands up remarkably well for a killer snake story from years ago, not least because of some killer casting; you wouldn’t get this kind of crew on a monster movie these days...

| Original Score: 3/5 | Feb 18, 2024

Anaconda is bonkers (yes), but it's also consistent and cohesive in a self-conscious manner, embracing every ridiculous and over-the-top insanity that made it a cult classic over the years.

This surprise hit is unpretentious and silly; it never forgets what it is – a campy "Jaws" clone.

| Original Score: B | Sep 1, 2022

Anaconda is a skillful if hokey horror movie that will seem both familiar and campy.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Mar 2, 2022

One of those horror films that intends to be serious, scary, and bloody, but turns out laughably hokey.

| Original Score: 3/10 | Sep 9, 2020

One of the highlights of... the last Golden Age of so-bad-it's-good cinema.

| Original Score: 2/5 | Apr 8, 2020

Yet somehow, Anaconda racks up a winning score (and body count) with a mix of imagination and humour.

| Original Score: 3/5 | Aug 15, 2018

The monster looks like a maniacal garden hose in a couple of sequences. Still, it delivers the necessary thrills and chills.

An above average specimen hungering for tasty morsels.

| Original Score: 3/5 | May 20, 2011

Just to show, early on, how much danger these folks are in, we get to see the film's titular star squeeze a black panther so tight that one of its eyeballs pops out.

| Original Score: 2.5/5 | Jul 6, 2010

Anaconda, directed by Luis Llosa with all of the subtlety of a snake-oil salesman, is in the great tradition of cinematic cheese, as processed as Kraft Singles slices.

| Original Score: B- | Jul 6, 2010

In its natural habitat, Anaconda can be appreciated for its campy pleasures, not the least of which is Jon Voight in a delirious, balls-out performance as creepy Paraguayan snake poacher Paul Serone. [Blu-ray]

| Original Score: 2.5/4 | Jun 10, 2009

...never quite lives up to the promise of its admittedly irresistible set-up...

| Original Score: 2/4 | Jan 20, 2009

A silly and plodding Jaws rip-off about a 40-foot man-eating snake on the prowl in the Brazilian rain forest.

Full Review | Oct 18, 2008

Luis Llosa's Anaconda is great "B" movie trash, complete with bad special effects and cheesy monsters.

| Original Score: 3/4 | Aug 26, 2006

One never questions the realism of the remarkable animatronic and computer-generated effects, but it's hard to credit a snake that screams.

If you shut your brain down you'll have some fun.

| Original Score: 6/10 | Dec 31, 2005

At its best, it refuses to take itself seriously and literally winks at us. But more often, it derives laughs unintentionally.
